I was pleased to have the opportunity to work with the Chapel Hill Math Curriculum Writing team on May 31 and June 2. I spoke on THE DATA (my favorite subject) and how to identify what CHISD is calling their CHallenge TEKS.

"Ensuring that ALL students have access to a viable curriculum and that they learn it."

Meet Bryce, one of the clinical teachers I supervised this Spring.

Congratulations Bryce Hale and wishing you continued success in your graduate studies.

Wanted to let you know that I am working on a side-by-side correlation between the seventh and eighth grade TEKS in an effort to better prepare students for the STAAR. I will be sharing this document with teachers a Chapel Hill in a few weeks. More to come on this in a few weeks.

Hello 8th grade teachers...you have worked hard, they have worked hard. You have done all you can do and now it is time for them to "show off" what they can do. STAAR makes a terrible master but a good slave...make STAAR work for you. Using what you learn on Thursday along with the results you get this summer to impact your instruction next school year. Back in the TAKS days I would always be annoyed with wishing students and teachers "Good luck." I would say it's not about luck...it's about EFFORT and that crossing your fingers was not a TAKS strategy...I got a lot of mileage out of that one. Unfortunately, the more I study the Social Studies STAAR I realize that there may be some luck needed for success. Some items seem more like Trivial Pursuit questions than good assessment items.
SO LET ME SAY GOOD LUCK ON THE staar.

Let's work together to de-mystify STAAR. There is nothing magical about STAAR preparation. It begins on the first day of school and ends the day before STAAR test day. Sometimes all you need is a plan for success. Here's the CIA Process Plan for success for Grade 8 Social Studies STAAR. .

The CIA Process

Curriculum

Title each unit of study
Colonial Era
Revolutionary Era
Constitutional Era
The Early Republic
Age of Jackson
Westward Expansion
Sectionalism/Reform Movements
Civil War
Reconstruction

Decisions to make for each TEKS aligned unit of study
Number of instructional days in each unit
STAAR alignment check
TEKS to introduce and teach in each unit
STAAR alignment check
TEKS to assess on Common Assessment
STAAR alignment check
Identify important people, dates, documents, issues, events
STAAR alignment check

Literature Connection

Identify the STAAR BIG PICTURES

Instruction

Making content delivery hands-on and student-centered
Systematic use of Cornell Notes
Mastery lecture format
Graphic organizers
Thinking Maps
Frayer Vocabulary
KIM
KWL

Embedding the most effective instructional strategies into common daily lesson plans
High Yield strategies
Cooperative Learning Groups
Reinforcement of Effort
Clear objectives and goal setting
Nonlinguistic representation of knowledge
Questions, cues, and advanced organizers
Bloom’s
Depth of Knowledge
Ensuring common resources
Frequent learning checks along with pacing checks

Assessment

Weekly learning checks
5 multiple choice questions
Common across grade level
On Fridays
Common assessments after each unit
Teachers select four to five STAAR tested TEKS SEs. Three of the selected SEs are Readiness Standards
A minimum of four multiple choice questions are developed for each selected TEKS SE
If a student correctly answers at least 3 of four questions aligned to the SE then a student has mastered the SE.
If the student misses three or all items aligned to a specific SE, the student is identified to receive RTI.
RTI instruction developed to focus on the specific STAAR tested content not mastered on the common assessment.
Teachers and principal are provided with a copy of the common assessment at least four instructional days before it is to be given.
A Common Assessment will consist of 20-24 items. Each common assessment will also include an essay question.

Two benchmarks
Mid-January-Colonial Era through 1820
Early April-cumulative-Colonial Era-Reconstruction
