Our Historical Society Board members celebrated today at the opening of the restored covered bridge!
The Long Grove Historical Society was formed in 1974, to preserve and disseminate the history of the Long Grove, Illinois area. The Long Grove Historical Society was formed in March, 1974, to accept the Drexler Tavern building as a gift.
A joint project with the Village Board made possible the relocation of the tavern to a site behind the current Kildeer Countryside School. Today we know the building not as Drexler Tavern, but simply as Village Hall. Two additional structures have also been relocated to this area—one of the area’s one room schoolhouses, Archer School, and a mid-1800’s barn, Ruth Barn. The school and the barn form the core of the program we run each year for our local schools, so that our children can experience first hand what life used to be like in Long Grove. Last, but not least, a mid-1800’s farm house was relocated to an area bordering the southwest corner of the Stemple Parking lot. “The Farmhouse”, as we refer to it, houses our archives, a meeting room, and several restored “period” rooms that we open occasionally for tours. In addition to maintaining the above properties and our educational programs, we actively acquire items of local historic interest for our archives and conduct a variety of historical programs for current residents. We are a 501C3 charity and receive no tax dollars - existing solely from your contributions and our own fundraising efforts. Thank you for your support!

Campaign brings in nearly $53,500 for Long Grove bridge renovation
Private fundraising through lemonade stands, donation jars, large contributions and other means resulted in a hefty check for Long Grove to help pay for restoration of a 114-year-old bridge that's on the National Register of Historic Places.
Tonight our Historical Society presented a very large check to the Village of Long Grove to help with restoration of the Covered Bridge. Work is progressing and it should be finished mid-August! See the article in the Chicago Tribune below:
Hey, Long Grove kids and families, here’s something to look forward to!!! Our Annual Penny Carnival is coming again soon.....Sunday August 2, Noon till 2:00 on the Historical Society Farmhouse lawn. Our Historical Society Board is all smiles today at seeing the great progress being made on restoration of the historic Long Grove covered bridge!
Work has been started on the historic bridge! It has been temporarily moved off of the abutments so that restoration can begin.
Stores may be closed due to the current crisis, but work continues on our beloved bridge. It has been temporarily moved off-site for repairs to it and the creek bed, then will be re-installed. Stay tuned for updates!
Like this virus, the bridge situation is only temporary. Experts are doing their best to fix things, and soon it will be back to normal and better than ever! Thanks to everyone for your patience and support!!
Reminder that specific items can still be ordered over the phone to be shipped to you. And gift cards are a good way to support your local businesses during this shut down- also available by phone call.
