As we come into mid tax season, we want to remind you that you should never pay to have your tax refund direct deposited. IRS does NOT charge for this service, nor for sending a check to you if that is your preference. Beware of tax prep companies that tell you that direct deposit is a premium service that you must pay extra for. It isn't.

The standard deduction is a dollar amount that reduces the amount of income on which you are taxed and varies according to your filing status. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act nearly doubled standard deductions.

Starting in 2018, the standard deduction for each filing status is:
Single - $12,000 (up from $6,350 in 2017)
Married filing jointly OR Qualifying widow(er) - $24,000 (up from $12,700 in 2017)
Married filing separately - $12,000 (up from $6,350 in 2017)
Head of household - $18,000 (up from $9,350 in 2017)

The amounts are higher if you or your spouse are blind or over age 65. Many individuals who formerly itemized may now find it more beneficial to take the standard
deduction.

The deduction for moving expenses is suspended. During the suspension, no deduction is allowed for use of an automobile as part of a move. This suspension does not apply to members of the U.S. Armed Forces on active duty who move pursuant to a military order related to a permanent change of station.

Also, employers will include moving expense reimbursements as taxable income in the employees’ wages because the new law suspends the former exclusion from income for qualified moving expense reimbursements from an employer. This suspension does not apply to members of the U.S. Armed Forces on active duty who move pursuant to a military order related to a permanent change of station, as long as the expenses would qualify as a deduction if the government didn’t reimburse the expense.

A new credit of up to $500 is available for each of your qualifying dependents (other than children who can be claimed for the child tax credit).

The qualifying dependent must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or U.S. resident alien. You may be able to claim this credit if you have children age 17 or over, including college students, children with ITINs, or other older relatives in your household. (This basically replaces the previous $4,050 dependent credit for each dependent on your return.)

Another Tax Reform change......Miscellaneous itemized deductions have been suspended. (Formerly on Schedule A with a 2% of AGI threshold) This means that if you previously deducted your home office, mileage and other business expenses that your employer did not reimburse you for, you will not be able to claim them this year.

This section also included expenses such as uniforms, union dues and the deduction for business-related meals, entertainment and travel. It also includes tax preparation fees and investment expenses, safe deposit box fees and investment expenses from pass-through entities.

Is it Really the IRS Calling?

The IRS wants you to understand how and when we contact taxpayers and help you determine whether a contact you may have received is truly from an IRS employee.

The IRS initiates most contacts through regular mail delivered by the United States Postal Service.

However, there are special circumstances in which the IRS will call or come to a home or business, such as when a taxpayer has an overdue tax bill, to secure a delinquent tax return or a delinquent employment tax payment, or to tour a business as part of an audit or during criminal investigations

The Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service issued final regulations and three related pieces of guidance, implementing the new qualified business income (QBI) deduction (section 199A deduction).

The new QBI deduction, created by the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) allows many owners of sole proprietorships, partnerships, S corporations, trusts, or estates to deduct up to 20 percent of their qualified business income. Eligible taxpayers can also deduct up to 20 percent of their qualified real estate investment trust (REIT) dividends and publicly traded partnership income.

The QBI deduction is available in tax years beginning after Dec. 31, 2017, meaning eligible taxpayers will be able to claim it for the first time on their 2018 Form 1040.

The Internal Revenue Service issued proposed regulations today for a new provision allowing many owners of sole proprietorships, partnerships, trusts and S corporations to deduct 20 percent of their qualified business income.

The new deduction -- referred to as the Section 199A deduction or the deduction for qualified business income -- was created by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. The deduction is available for tax years beginning after Dec. 31, 2017. Eligible taxpayers can claim it for the first time on the 2018 federal income tax return they file next year.

The deduction is generally available to eligible taxpayers whose 2018 taxable incomes fall below $315,000 for joint returns and $157,500 for other taxpayers. It’s generally equal to the lesser of 20 percent of their qualified business income plus 20 percent of their qualified real estate investment trust dividends and qualified publicly traded partnership income or 20 percent of taxable income minus net capital gains.

Deductions for taxpayers above the $157,500/$315,000 taxable income thresholds may be limited. Those limitations are fully described in the proposed regulations.

Qualified business income includes domestic income from a trade or business. Employee wages, capital gain, interest and dividend income are excluded.

Tax reform legislation passed in December 2017 includes changes that affect businesses. One of these changes allows businesses to write off most depreciable business assets in the year they place them in service.
Machinery, equipment, computers, appliances and furniture generally qualify.
The 100-percent depreciation deduction applies to qualifying property acquired and placed in service after Sept. 27, 2017.
And like always if you have a question just give us a call or text!

The Health Coverage Tax Credit (HCTC) is a refundable tax credit that pays 72.5% of qualified health insurance premiums for eligible individuals and their families. Taxpayers may elect to receive the credit through their federal tax return or through advance monthly payments paid directly to their Health Plan Administrator.

Small business owners can visit IRS.gov for a wide range of resources that will help them better understand tax reform. Last year’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act includes tax law changes that may affect small businesses’ bottom line.

Tax credits, deductions and savings plans can help taxpayers with their expenses for higher education.

A tax credit reduces the amount of income tax you may have to pay.
A deduction reduces the amount of your income that is subject to tax, thus generally reducing the amount of tax you may have to pay.
Certain savings plans allow the accumulated earnings to grow tax-free until money is taken out (known as a distribution), or allow the distribution to be tax-free, or both.
An exclusion from income means that you won't have to pay income tax on the benefit you're receiving, but you also won't be able to use that same tax-free benefit for a deduction or credit.

11/21/2018

The IRS encourages everyone to use the Withholding Calculator to do a Paycheck Checkup, which is even more important this year because of the tax law changes.

11/14/2018

Withholding
What You Need to Know
Due to tax changes in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, many taxpayers’ withholding went down in early 2018, giving them more money in their paychecks in 2018.
You may receive a smaller refund - or even owe an unexpected tax bill – when you file your 2018 tax return next year, especially if you did not adjust your withholding after the withholding tables changed.Other changes that affect you and your family include increasing the standard deduction, suspending personal exemptions, increasing the child tax credit, adding a new credit for other dependents and limiting or discontinuing certain deductions.

Deducting Bad Debt | Internal Revenue Service

Report Non-Business Bad Debt on a Tax Return
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is sympathetic toward those who lend money—expecting repayment—but subsequently get burned. You can write off bad debts when this happens, even if you're not a business, but it's important to know the rules that apply.

To deduct a bad debt, you must show that there was an intention at the time of the transaction to make a loan and not a gift; AND you have no reasonable expectation that the nonbusiness bad debt will be repaid.

Bitcoin?!?
Mining bitcoins, using personal resources, and selling them to someone for cash or equivalent value in goods and services. The value received from giving up the bitcoins is taxed as personal or business income after deducting any expenses incurred in the process of mining. Such expenses may include the cost electricity or the computer hardware used in the mining of bitcoins. Thus, if one is able to mine 10 bitcoins and sell them for $250 each. You have to report the $2500 as taxable income before any deductible expenses.

Bitcoin?!?
The IRS has made it mandatory to report bitcoin transactions of all kinds, no matter how small in value. Thus, every US taxpayer is required to keep a record of all buying, selling of, investing in, or using bitcoins to pay for goods or services (which the IRS considers bartering). Because bitcoins are being treated as assets, if you use bitcoins for simple transactions such as buying groceries at a supermarket you will incur a capital gains tax (either long-term or short-term depending on how long you have been holding the bitcoins).
