LOCAL ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: MEET NORA THOMPSON
Hi! Welcome to my crazy little corner of the world. I’m Nora, an all-around artist, partly out of necessity and partly out of the need to explore new things. I’m an illustrator, graphic designer and fine artist, and I also write. I’ve been exhibiting artwork since 1990 and illustrating professionally since 1992. I started playing drums when I was nine, graduated with my BFA at the top of my class when I was 40, and in between raised twins. My best friend is a potter and painter and agreed to marry me, and we spend as much time on the bike trail as humanly possible.
I work in many different mediums including acrylic, graphite, colored pencil, pen and ink, and digital, all on wood, board, canvas, paper or even cabinet doors. I draw and paint everything from human figures to non-objective abstracts to twisted little monstrous creatures. Having so many mediums to choose from means lack of boredom and constant inspiration. I love playing with mediums I’ve never used or haven’t played with enough, and I’m always drawn to graphite and charcoal in every form I can find. The additive and subtractive qualities of charcoal feel very appealing and forgiving.
Most of my art for most of my life never ventured very far outside the lines. I did as I was told and followed what I thought were the rules. But once I glanced away for a second, out of the corner of my eye something sparked outside the lines, and I imagined crazy little characters whose sole purpose was to exist only for me. I gave myself permission to explore and not fear spontaneity, and in doing so also gave myself permission to fail. By experimenting with new techniques and pushing a medium beyond its traditional limits to find what it was capable of, I inadvertently expanded my own limits. What jumped onto that first sketchbook page was nothing like what people had been paying me to draw in the real world. These characters had been crawling around in my head for weeks, and they wanted out. They were pretty raw, but e
