Our March staff feature is Julie Hamel, a Student Success Specialist for TRIO SES students.

As someone who is interested in how people choose careers, Julie likes to say that she is in her third career! First, she was a high school Spanish teacher; earning a Masters of School Counseling led to a second career as a high school guidance counselor. Her third career in higher education was found after she earned a Ph.D. in Counseling and Student Development. Julie began her time at The University of Kansas first with the University Career Center and now with TRIO SES & STEM.

Beyond advising TRIO Students, she is active in developing study abroad opportunities for TRIO students. For summer 2020, she has developed a new study abroad program specifically for TRIO students, Developing Global Perspective. Additionally, in 2015, she founded a campus initiative to better support our students that have been in foster care, and now leads the program, Fostering Jayhawk Success.

Every week, TRIO wants to send our students into the weekend with a Friday Photo Message:

Julie Hamel, TRIO SES Student Success Specialist:
"Students – we definitely miss you and the energy you bring to TRIO SES & STEM and to campus! I feel as if I’ve been on an emotional roller coaster this week, running between fear and anxiety to hope and optimism and all of that is ok and to be expected in the middle of an unprecedented event. Most of all, as I’ve visited with many of you, I’ve been so inspired - impressed with your resiliency and your willingness to adapt to the many changes in your day to day life! We are stronger together, and I look forward to seeing all that you will accomplish, even in the face of adversity."

Due to concerns about the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19), KU TRIO SES & STEM is moving all services remotely (online or phone calls). As of March 16th and until further notice, TRIO’s physical office space in Strong Hall rooms 6 & 7 will be closed.
