As we wrap up Black Breastfeeding Week and National Breastfeeding month I wanted to share my story. This picture of River is my favorite breastfeeding photo. We had so many challenges, and as a lactation consultant I was upset that I couldn’t figure it out. We had some of the best providers helping support us. Riv would breastfeed but she just didn’t seem happy or comfortable in any position. She had high muscle tone in the lower half of her body and I didn’t want to push her.

I made the decision to exclusively pump for her. At first it broke my heart because this wasn’t the plan. We pushed for more evaluations and more testing. Shortly after the girls 1st birthday River was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and epilepsy. I suspected CP because of her tone but we finally received the answers we were looking for.

Pumping is breastfeeding and each breastfeeding journey with my kids looked different. I am grateful that I was able to provide milk for my babies. Breastfeeding can be hard and I’m proud of you whether you breastfed one time or for many years. Happy Breastfeeding month.
