Lancaster ArtWalk

Lancaster ArtWalk Lancaster ArtWalk, a twice annual self-guided tour of downtown galleries. Special exhibitions, meet-the-artist events, children’s activities and live demonstrations.

Special exhibitions, meet-the-artist events, children’s activities and live demonstrations are all available for discovery within the bustling independent galleries of Lancaster city. Art Walks have a long history in the City of Lancaster. Back in 1965, the first art walk was organized by the Community Gallery, now the Lancaster Museum of Art. The event was called Art Sunday and occurred on the first Sunday in October. It was a special day for promoting local artists and galleries, and included both city and county venues. Arts venues were fewer and father between at that time. Downtown was a quieter place and there were no First Fridays. Thanks to the Community Gallery/Lancaster Museum of Art, Art Sunday continued every year and became well-established in the yearly calendar of events. Over time, Art Sunday grew and became more diversified in the types of venues participating. In 1984, the Lancaster Gallery Association decided to create a similar event in the spring (as Art Sunday), but on a smaller scale. The original name for this new event was Art Walk, and it was designed to showcase galleries in the City of Lancaster. In recent years, the event has included a Kid Walk, too. Art Walk was organized by the gallery owners themselves. Responsibility moved from volunteer to volunteer every six to eight years.

Hidden Treasures

The Hidden Treasures Story
If you’re following local news, you should be well aware of the fact that Hidden Treasures, and the historic building it shares with Robburitos Restaurant, is slated for demolition to make way for a much needed residential/mixed use project which would change the landscape of the downtown district.

While there are strong opinions on both sides as to why this should or shouldn’t happen, it’s important to let all of our fans, friends and customers who have loyally supported us over the years, know the story from inside Hidden Treasures.

First we want everyone to know we are still very much in business, and the forty plus vendors who sell here continue to search for new treasures to display in their spaces. We also continue to welcome new vendors who look forward to the opportunity to set up shop.

Then we would like everyone to know that management at Hidden Treasures is being proactive to look for a new space within the city limits. If there is anyone who knows of potential available space that would be suitable for us, please let us know. (717 824-3210)

Finally, we continue to make new fans every day and look forward to everyone’s continued support. There will be no going out of business sales any time soon. Please feel free to share this important Hidden Treasures information with anyone who might be interested and certainly continue to tell others about the fact that we still live up to our name...being hidden down the alley behind Robburitos.

Thanks from all of us who sell at Hidden Treasures.
See you soon.😊

This First Friday and Art Walk weekend will revolve around women and flowers. Flowers, like women, are survivors. Some can handle the worse conditions and still bloom and carry beauty. We hope you are able to join us for this beautiful show!

In the spirit of survivors, Christiane is proud to announce she has donated original paintings and a 30x40 giclee print of “the Wild Ride" to a fundraiser for Help the Fight. They provide financial help for patients that are in the position of being financially stable overall but still not able to pay the bill for cancer treatment.

When asked to comment on a piece in the current exhibition, ‘A New Perspective: Selections from the Permanent Collection’ Marshall Snively, President of Lancaster City Alliance stated, “As a city resident, Lancaster Landscape II to me captures perfectly the diverse architecture that so often is unnoticed that occurs on the back of a street of Lancaster rowhome….all under what looks to me as a beautiful sunset sky. While in many cases you can see the similarities in the architecture of homes facing the street, I often notice the tapestry of the “personalized” rear facades and yards. This often represents a mosaic of home additions, enclosed and open porches and balconies, bold colors, and interesting gardens and ornamentation. This view is often in sharp contrast to the historically intact front facades. In fact, it can be an entirely different world from the view from the sidewalk. Growing up in a town of similar size, as a child I often preferred to walk the alleys on my way downtown with my grandfather. This reminds me of those times. Interestingly, as we walk the alleys and small streets of Lancaster City today, this painting remains current throughout the city. It’s hard to believe it was created in 1969.”
.
William Early, Lancaster Landscape II, 1969, acrylic on masonite, currently on view at the Lancaster Museum of Art
