Lancaster ArtWalk

Lancaster ArtWalk Lancaster ArtWalk, a twice annual self-guided tour of downtown galleries. Special exhibitions, meet-the-artist events, children’s activities and live demonstrations.

Special exhibitions, meet-the-artist events, children’s activities and live demonstrations are all available for discovery within the bustling independent galleries of Lancaster city. Art Walks have a long history in the City of Lancaster. Back in 1965, the first art walk was organized by the Community Gallery, now the Lancaster Museum of Art. The event was called Art Sunday and occurred on the first Sunday in October. It was a special day for promoting local artists and galleries, and included both city and county venues. Arts venues were fewer and father between at that time. Downtown was a quieter place and there were no First Fridays. Thanks to the Community Gallery/Lancaster Museum of Art, Art Sunday continued every year and became well-established in the yearly calendar of events. Over time, Art Sunday grew and became more diversified in the types of venues participating. In 1984, the Lancaster Gallery Association decided to create a similar event in the spring (as Art Sunday), but on a smaller scale. The original name for this new event was Art Walk, and it was designed to showcase galleries in the City of Lancaster. In recent years, the event has included a Kid Walk, too. Art Walk was organized by the gallery owners themselves. Responsibility moved from volunteer to volunteer every six to eight years.

The Demuth Museum

The Demuth Museum is excited to announce this year's annual Demuth Invitational exhibition, "Contemporary Cityscapes: Today's Lancaster Landscape!" This exhibtion will encourage local, contemporary artists to explore and interpret the 21st century Lancaster cityscape through their own style. Over 20 artists are participating in the 2020 show.

Charles Demuth was among some of the first American artists to depict the urban environment of the early 20th century through a modern lens. His iconic Precisionist paintings feature his hometown’s smokestacks, grain elevators, water towers, steeples, and abundant brick buildings. Instead of bustling markets and streets lined with horses and trolleys, these new cityscapes focused on architectural elements where shape and form take precedence.

Over the last 20 years, Lancaster City has experienced many changes, as new development resides among 200+ year-old brick structures. Many neighborhoods are seeing revitalization and communities are changing. The interpretation of urban environments, past and present, will be an underlying current for our 2020 exhibitions with two other exhibitions focusing on aspects of this theme.

Join us on Friday, January 31, from 5-8 pm for our opening reception at the Demuth Museum! "Contemporary Cityscapes: Today's Lancaster Landscape" will be on view from February 1 - March 1, 2020.

Artwork: Susan J. Gottlieb, Golden Hour on Water Street, 2020, hand-colored etching on Rives paper, 8" x 8", on view at the Demuth Museum from February 1 - March 1, 2020

Good news for anyone visiting us on Gallery Row. From now through October 6, just our block is offering free street parking, courtesy of UGI. They have been doing extensive roadwork on our block and interrupting traffic patterns, so they've extended this olive branch to us/you. Take advantage of it! But remember, it's just for the 100 block of N. Prince (AKA "Gallery Row").
