Our first VirtualSpace study break was a great success!

Lake Forest College students de-stressed today before finals in the VirtualSpace, a new virtual reality lab on campus. Students saw far-off places with Google Earth VR, sliced and diced flying fruit in a fast-paced round of Fruit Ninja VR, and much more. There are still a few minutes to enjoy the Virtual Reality Open House in the VirtualSpace, Donnelley and Lee Library, Room 212 ending at 4 p.m.

Come Hear “Souvenir Music from the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893”

Don Meyer, Chicago Fellow in 2016, presents the musical results of his research in this upcoming concert at Lake Forest College.

If you've ever wanted to get an idea of just how exciting the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893 was to Americans at the time, this parlor music offers a glimpse back to a long-ago, but still familiar, era, when a trip round the world's first Ferris Wheel offered a sudden chance for romance, or a glimpse of another world.

For our summer research students, digital research doesn't always mean a trek to the archives. Sometimes, archival work takes place from the comfort of one's own home, with a familiar computer and a comfortable seat. Here, Sarah Boomgarden peruses the Chicago History Museum's images database to find clues about the locations of photos of Chicago's 1950 and 60s jazz and blues scene, in her work for environmental studies professor Brian McCammack. Also, Zack Hines looks through historic newspaper articles for records of a 1945 Chicago Tribune home architecture competition, working with politics professor Siobhan Moroney.

Chicago Fellows Research Assistant Isabel McKenzie was delighted to find a biography of once-famous Chicago boxer Barney Ross (1909-1967) in the Chicago History Museum's research collection. This summer, she's working with English professor Joshua Corey to recover the fascinating life of this largely forgotten figure. The CHM's research center library is one of a small few that has a copy of this book by Ross, a Jewish Chicago-born champion boxer. His book, _The Fundamentals of Boxing_ (1942) was published four years after Ross' final famous fight, his 1938 match against Henry Armstrong (which you can see on YouTube!). Ross was a triple division champion—lightweight, light welterweight and welterweight—and lived, as his biographer Douglas Century writes, "an uncannily mythic life." Isabel says, "It's been beautiful, exciting, and jarring learning his story, and I'm so excited and grateful to be helping Professor Corey resurrect it."

Rebecca Howell ’17 assisted anthropology professor Rebecca Graff in a recent excavation at Forest Home Cemetery in Forest Park, Illinois. Graff, working with the Illinois Labor History Society, had hoped to uncover a 19th-century time capsule thought to be buried underneath the Haymarket Martyrs Monument. While the team did not find the capsule, they did unearth artifacts that show the continuous use of the space as a site for play, picnicking, and for commemorating the eight labor leaders convicted in the Haymarket Affair. Further artifact analysis is under way!
