Artifact Friday: The Cookhouse

In addition to the clubhouse and temple, Wo Hing Society built a cookhouse, a community kitchen used for large gatherings. Adults prepared meals over wood fires using large woks, steamers, pots, and pans, while children helped with the dishes.

The cookhouse was lost in the fire, but its history remains an important part of Wo Hing Society’s story and the Chinese community in Lahaina.

The Hawaiian place name for this area is "Apuakehau", translated by Inez Ashdown as “the gentle land breeze bringing the dew to the blossoms.”

In the early 1800s, King Kamehameha III planted and harvested kalo in this area. The site became known as the King’s Kalo Patch and continued to thrive for many years.

The kalo patch was sadly impacted by the 2023 wildfires. In August, we gathered for a Kalo Workshop to learn about the Hawaiian origin story of kalo and how to prepare and plant huli!

Artifact Friday: Vintage Glass Bottles

The glass bottles are stored in the basement of Hale Paʻi.

In the first two photos is a blue green colored medicine bottle dating back to the 19th century.

The next two photos, similar in color, dates to 1890 and is labeled “1890 Japanese Food JEF 900.”

The final two are glass milk bottles from PM Co. Ltd. Dairy and Greenwell Dairy Co. in Kamuela, Hawaiʻi.

Join us tonight at Waiola Church Lawn for an evening of live Hawaiian music featuring special performance by Marvin Tevaga | 🎶

Born and raised on Maui, Tevaga’s passion for music began when he picked up a ʻukulele for the first time at 8 years old. He grew up loving and listening to a variety of music genres brought by the different cultures of our island, including pop, rock and country. He infuses his songs with both his love for these genres as well as his love for his island’s music, creating his own unique music style. His music is available on all major streaming platforms.

Our Hawaiian Music Series concerts will now be held at Waiola Church Lawn in Lahaina all of 2026 ❤️
