A wonderful Porch Program today with sculptor Toby Mendez talking about the The Clara Barton Memorial . Especially poignant on this 160th anniversary weekend.
Civil War Sites in Washington, Frederick, and Carroll Counties (Maryland) The center is 11 am-5 pm; Weekends in April, May, Oct. & Nov; Daily June-September.
This new center opened September 14, 2010, and educates travelers about the large concentration of Civil War sites in the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area. Three rooms of the exhibit center explore the main themes of the heritage area: In the Heat of Battle, On the Home Front, and Beyond the Battlefield. Each exhibit room includes an interpretive panel and site panels that relate to that theme
. The site panels provide brief descriptions to entice visitors to travel to the numerous Civil War sites located in Carroll, Frederick, and Washington counties. Each panel shows the distance to the site and also includes a brochure rack providing visitors with the most up-to-date information about each site’s hours, fees, and other pertinent information. The back room of the center is a visitor information area staffed by volunteers, with a wealth of information about things to see and do in the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area. The Visitor Center is housed in the historic Newcomer House, built by Christopher Orndorff in the 1780s.

In this year when we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the C&O Canal NHP, here is something from St. Anthony Falls, MN.
In this collaborative effort between nonprofits and government, artists use the St. Anthony Falls lock wall as a canvass to tell the story of the river using image projection, sound, and lights.

Freedom of the Press Day
Gathland Illumination
(Gathland State Park, MD). An Illumination of 250 candles will occur on June 28 at the War Correspondents Arch located in Gathland State Park on South Mountain in observance of the first Freedom of the Press Day in Maryland.
It will mark the one year anniversary of the fatal attack which killed journalists at the Capital Gazette in Annapolis and will be part of a number of observances held in Maryland that day.
This small commemorative Illumination is being organized and produced by the Antietam National Battlefield Memorial Illumination Committee founded and chaired by Georgene Charles. The Antietam National Battlefield manages the triangle of land around the stone arch, which was built by George Alfred Townsend and dedicated in 1896 to the memory of the journalists and artists who covered the Civil War. The surrounding area is Gathland State Park, a part of the South Mountain Recreation Area and the South Mountain Battlefield.
Antietam was the site of the first photographs taken of American war dead before they were buried. The photos created a sensation when they were published in 1862 and are considered the beginning of American photo-journalism. The Antietam Illumination Committee felt it was fitting and appropriate to extend the Annual Illumination to this site on South Mountain for this first Freedom of the Press Day in Maryland.
A small remembrance program will be held at 8:30 PM and the candles will be lit.
Very limited parking is available near the monument.
