The Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium

The Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium Combining interactive astronomy education with spectacular public shows and night sky viewing opportunities, the Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium continues to be one of Kansas City's greatest connections to the night sky.

Built as part of Union Station's renovations in the late 1990s, the Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium's 60-foot dome makes it one of the largest planetariums in the midwest. Union Station offers a number of opportunities in the planetarium for groups to take advantage of including field trips, Girl and Boy Scout badge workshops, summer camps, and other educational opportunities, as well as business meetings or general facility rental options.

Happy Birthday to astronomer Edwin Hubble, born 132 years ago today in Marshfield, Missouri. Dr. Hubble proved that many objects previously thought to be clouds of dust and gas and classified as "nebulae" were actually galaxies beyond the Milky Way. He also confirmed an "expanding" universe, which provided the foundation for the big-bang theory. His findings fundamentally changed the scientific view of the universe and helped pave the way for future astronomers. And of course, his name is most widely recognized for the Hubble Space Telescope, which was named in his honor.

Tonight over Kansas City, we'll experience the longest partial lunar eclipse in some 580 years! At its peak, 95% of the Moon will be covered by the shadow of the Earth. With clear skies tonight, viewing conditions should be ideal. Just be sure to set your alarm clock! The partial eclipse will begin at around 1:19 AM tonight and end around 4:47 AM, with the peak occurring at 3:03 AM.

If you miss tonight's eclipse, don't worry! Just make sure to save the date for November 8, 2022. While tonight is a partial lunar eclipse, next year will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience as we are treated to a full lunar eclipse lasting in Kansas City some 5 hours, 1 minute, 15 seconds, with 1 hour, 24 minutes, 57 seconds spent in totality!

If you've got questions about eclipses or just want to learn more, then be sure to check out our "Moon deep dive" livestream from November 30, 2020 >> https://youtu.be/jICq1dUv_eU

Not all of NASA's historic accomplishments happen in space; sometimes, they create history a little closer to Earth. In this case, around 110,000 feet above the Earth's surface when seventeen years ago today, on November 16, 2004, NASA's X-43A scramjet set a new world speed record for a jet-powered aircraft, reaching Mach 9.6, or nearly 7,000 mph!
