6 years ago, a team of three women and 9 excited volunteers launched The Modernists in at a Museum event. We were thrilled to launch alongside Tom's Town Distilling Co. on the same day!

6 years later, we see the same familiar faces at Modernist events, supporting our mission of helping make the National WWI Museum and Memorial a dynamic force in Kansas City culture and pride. Thank you for being with us on this journey!

We launched membership recruitment at Fiery Stick with a hype tent and a grand group of volunteers and partners. See someone you know? Tag away!

For Black History Month, A Way To Honor More Kansas Citians Who Deserve 'To Be Remembered'

When it comes to the history of the African American community in Kansas City, almost everyone knows the big names — people like jazz great Charlie Parker or baseball legend Buck O’Neil, who are both memorialized in countless ways around the metro.

“But that’s just a small number of the people who worked together and individually to build life and culture for Black Americans,” said Carmaletta Williams, executive director of the Black Archives of Mid-America in Kansas City.

Stories of the most famous African Americans from Kansas City are well told, but the work of many more community members often goes unrecognized.

As the world waits while we count the remaining ballots - including thousands of military ballots, let's remember that what always unites a divided nation is the support and remembrance of our men and women serving in the military.

Next week is Veterans Day and Armistice Day. The National WWI Museum and Memorial is extending it's free admission to veterans/active duty military for the entire week. Nov. 11 remains as free admission to the public. Outdoor morning ceremony is at 10 a.m. (will also be streamed live - stay tuned for that link).

If you have a poppy pin, please join us in wearing it in the countdown to Veterans Day as a symbolic bond of gratefulness between the living and the war dead.
