Winter is a great time to tackle invasive shrubs such as autumn olive, honeysuckle, buckthorn, and more. KNC's Ecological Services team can provide technical assistance to help land owners and managers to take on heavy-handed projects using tools such as brush cutters, chainsaws, and even heavy equipment if needed.

If you are interested in contracting our crew for invasive shrub management, please contact Anna Kornoelje, Ecological Services Director, at [email protected] and check out our Ecological Services page at: https://naturecenter.org/Conservation/Ecological-Services

Your gift can directly affect our animal care program. All of KNC's animals have been rescued and unable to survive in the wild due to previous injuries. Juni and Carmen, our new opossums, were born with Metabolic Bone Disease but have since made huge improvements to their health through the care of our animal care staff and volunteers. Your donation ensures that our animals are given the best possible care and have a satisfying stay at the Nature Center.

Bird Banding at KNC

Did you see our bird banders in action this year? Watch the video to learn more about this long running research program!

The results are in for 2019! In just two months time, Kalamazoo Valley Bird Observation (KVBO) researchers banded a total of 5,465 birds across 88 species this fall. Warblers made up a majority of bandings with 2,234 individual birds caught across 27 species.

A large number of birds stayed for over a month around KNC and the Pitsfield Banding Station. This process is called stopover and proves that surrounding habitats are well-used by various species during migration. Stopover is also an indicator of a healthy ecosystem!

Since 1974, the Kalamazoo Valley Bird Observatory has banded over 500,000 birds. Banding birds allows researchers to track and monitor migration patterns as well as population changes. Birds make ideal research subjects for looking at changes in the environment. This data is shared with different banding programs and institutions, tracking individual birds from state-to-state and even internationally!

Special thanks to volunteer Jim Triezenberg for the video!

Happy Halloween from our newest members, Juni and Carmen!

The brother-sister duo recently became part of KNC. Unfortunately, Juni and Carmen's mother was struck by a car last spring leaving all 10 baby opossums orphaned. Through the work of Wildlife Rehab Center Ltd., all the opossums were successfully released back into the wild with the exception of Juni and Carmen. The duo suffers from Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD), also known as Brittle Bone Disease, which means they would never be able to be released in the wild and survive.

However, MBD is reversible! KNC heard about the pair and transferred them to our care. We have been feeding them a diet consisting of calcium, glutamine, and high amounts of protein. In this past month, we've seen an incredible amount of improvement in their walking ability (as seen by Carmen walking along the tree branch). Allowing Juni and Carmen to explore new environments provides mentally stimulating enrichment and lets us see progress on their condition.

Note: The Kalamazoo Nature Center does not accept injured or orphaned animals. In the case where a wild animal can not be released, permitted organizations are able to provide care, share their story and help educate various audiences about their role in their environment. Learn more at:
