KIA's Black Refractions exhibit tells a shared story of complex people living in a complex place

Somehow, there are only 3+ weeks left of this exhibition. Stop by with the family before December 8. (Art Hop on 12/6 will be a 'farewell party'). Many thanks to all the sponsors and community partners making the arts in Kalamazoo front and center this Fall.

Black Refractions is the kind of exhibit that takes more than one visit to take it all in. Second Wave's Mark Wedel and Rehema Barber, the KIA's new chief curator, reflect on the pieces that evoke deep responses from them.

They do great work.

Darien’s work is on view in Where We Stand: Black Artists in Southwest Michigan through December 8.

Darien says: "I am a 24 year old art major at Western’s Frostic school of art. I have a heavy interest in the visual arts and within the last five years have developed a love for performing arts specifically spoken word. I have also played roller derby on and off since the age of thirteen and enjoy skating for fun in my free time. My favorite kind of music is lo-fi jazz and r&b, I love my slow jams. Helping people is incredibly important to me and being involved in the lives of our youth!"

Great work.

Oh the magic that can happen when artwork, theater and music combine! Tonight #FaceOffTheatre Company paired with Last Gasp Collective for "A Night of Music And Theatre" at the invitation of the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. We were asked to use pieces from its touring "Black Refractions" exhibition as our muse. If you've not seen this installation of a nearly a century of African American art, it'll be up thru Dec. 8. Don't miss it!
