Media Release: Visionary Museum Leader Kim Kanatani Is Appointed Museum Director of the UCI Institute and Museum for California Art

UCI is pleased to announce that nationally renowned museum educator, scholar, and collaborative arts producer Kim Kanatani has been appointed the first museum director of the UCI Institute and Museum for California Art. She joins UCI from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, where she served as Deputy Director and Gail Engelberg Director of Education. Kanatani will lead UCI IMCA in establishing a center for the study, research, and exhibition of the distinctive work made by California’s artists from the early 19th century to the present. UCI IMCA is home to two expansive collections of California art -- The Buck Collection of more than 3,000 works of California modern art and The Irvine Museum Collection of more than 1,300 California Impressionist paintings.

“I envision the museum serving as a state-of the-art teaching and learning institution, which will offer unparalleled arts and cross-curricular experiences for the campus and the wider community,” says Kanatani.

UCI Claire Trevor School of the Arts

It is with great sadness that we say farewell to founding faculty member, Professor Emeritus Tony DeLap. DeLap was instrumental in shaping the art department and taught at UCI from 1964-1991. A leading figure in West Coast Minimalism and Op Art, DeLap mentored students such as Chris Burden, James Turrell, Michael Asher, and Barbara T. Smith, to name a few. Delap’s work can be found in the collections of the UCI Institute and Museum for California Art; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Whitney Museum of American Art; The Museum of Modern Art; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; and The Tate Gallery, London, among others. Our deepest gratitude to Tony and sincerest condolences to his wife Kathy, his children Kelly and Jack, grandchildren, and family.

Tomorrow is UCI Giving Day! Consider making any small gift that will create a truly influential impact. The UCI Institute and Museum for California Art is committed to serving the children of our community and is dedicated to educating the next generation of artists, teachers, and students of California and its art.

Our goal is to continue to sponsor school children through the Irvine Museum Educational Outreach Program, providing these children the opportunity to gain knowledge in the world of art and global culture. UCI IMCA has the pleasure of being a part of the third annual UCI Giving Day, a day when all Anteaters come together to make a mountain out of an anthill. It is a day of giving to any area on campus of your choice to further UCI’s vision to embrace community and support the institution as we build up the next generation of future leaders.

The UCI Institute and Museum for California Art is committed to providing public outreach to underserved K-12 school children in the community. As part of our mission to offer access and exposure to the arts, we are proud to have hosted nearly 3,000 school children in the past year to view exhibitions at The Irvine Museum through the Irvine Museum Educational Outreach Program.

In honor of this year’s Giving Day, we ask for your continued support to the Irvine Museum Education Outreach Program to continue to work together to develop the next generation of artists and art enthusiasts. A gift of any size can make a large impact in the lives of these children. Link in Instagram bio for more information!

We would like to highlight the Irvine Museum Educational Outreach Program, a program dedicated to serving children in the community to have the opportunity to visit a museum, some for the very first time! We kindly ask for your support in our efforts to support the passion and artistic excitement in the lives of these children who will grow to be the next generation of patrons of the arts!
