We need you to submit your photos of the veterans in your family. The Iowa Park Historical Society members are working very hard on getting the veteran material updated for the museum. The Civil War veterans buried in Highland Cemetery is complete to the best of our knowledge. Daniel Walker has been doing an excellent job with his feature stories in the newspaper on the Civil War veterans buried there. Did you know there are five POWs buried there? At least one Spanish War veteran? Please help us with your photos and any story you care to share. This is one of our favorite rooms with our visitors.

On July 4, 2026, the U.S.A. will celebrate 250 years of freedom and independence, an historic celebration which will require more than a single day, week or month of the year. The celebration of freedom should be incorporated into every public event in 2026. While there will be many celebrations across North Texas and across the Nation this year, the primary celebration in Iowa Park will be held at Oscar Park (Lake Gordon) on Saturday June 27th, one week before July 4th. Every public and private organization in Iowa Park, and every citizen, is invited and encouraged to join in this historic celebration.

The highlight of the celebration will likely be the annual Community Development Corporation fireworks display at Lake Gordon on the evening of June 27th. This is typically one of the first and best fireworks displays kicking off a week of Independence Day celebrations in the region. The Semi Quincentennial Celebration will be no exception. On the same day, the City of Iowa Park will host the annual Independence Day Pigpen Mud Volleyball Tournament and Charity Fundraiser event in Oscar Park. There is adequate space in Oscar Park for numerous events on the same date, the week(s) before, or the following week leading up to the 4th of July.

If your organization would like to host an event in Oscar Park, please contact City Hall at (940) 592-2131.

Sincerely,

Mayor Jeff Pogatshnik

The Iowa Park Historical Society held its monthly board meeting on January 8. During the meeting, the Board discussed the need for a workday at the Iowa Park History Museum, which has been scheduled for January 17, 2026.

The Iowa Park History Museum will be open to the public on January 24, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Residents are invited to visit the museum and take Valentine-themed photographs using our Valentine backdrop.

Shirley Banks has completed the Masonic Lodge book, which includes photographs and other historical documentation, as well as the Eastern Star photograph collection.

The Society is currently seeking photographs, stories, articles, discharge papers, and/or draft cards related to local veterans. These materials will be preserved in our archives and made available for visitors to view and learn more about our community’s veterans. We are eager to honor and showcase our veterans within the museum. Individuals interested in loaning or donating materials are encouraged to contact any board member.

Current members of the Iowa Park Historical Society Board include: Shirley Banks, Billy Gilmore, Jack Gilmore, Robert Johnson, Robin Morris, Earl Morris, Jerry Flemming, and Taylor Burchett.

The Iowa Park Museum & Iowa Park Historical Society was so lucky last week because Carolyn Hester Hickman shared her father's pictures of Iowa Park dating early 1900's; mostly 1921. We are so grateful for Carolyn allowing us to scan these so everyone can enjoy them. They are valuable history of Iowa Park. Joseph Carrol Hester (1900-2004) was an outstanding photographer and many of these were taken from the water tower. Thank you so much, Carolyn!
