We are excited that we are able to host the tour of homes this year considering the state of things.

It was weird waking yesterday morning, not having our pre-tour brunch and then this morning to a leisurely Sunday.

The most of the Tour of Homes Committee was able to get together to celebrate today and toast to the tour, but really it was a toast to one another and the wonderful talent and love that they bring. It truly takes a village and man do we love the village we call home. Thank you, Irvington. Thank you volunteers!

How cool are these images? Not only can you auto play the homes on the tour, but you can stop and move around, and look at the "doll house" format to select a room to look into.

We encourage you to click around because the auto-play might miss something, like this amazing closet in the Pleasant Run Parkway Dr home!

Thanks to our friend, Scott B for bringing over his industrial strength disinfectant and spraying our tent down each morning of the sale!

Trying to keep things as safe as possible!

07/19/2020

We would like to again thank our sponsor, Montgomery Tent & Awning Co., INC for providing the tent for The Benton House Used Book Sale.

In light of the pandemic, it was a stressful decision to decide if we should even hold the sale. It’s been amazing how everyone has respected the request for properly worn masks, space limitations and social distancing.

Now... for Bag Day!*

*specially priced books excluded

07/18/2020

What a lovely day for a book sale! Sides of the tent are up, people are wearing (properly worn) masks, there’s a gentle breeze, and our friends from the The Historic Irvington Halloween Festival are here selling their 2020 shirts and masks.

All-in-all, a great (almost normal) day!

Come join us!

07/17/2020

It’s almost book sale time!!

We have been busy getting the tent all ready! Weather is beautiful, we have rearranged the tent to accommodate social distancing, ppe available...

See you all at 5 pm!

The Historic Irvington Halloween Festival

Congratulations to the Founder’s Award recipients! We have a special place in our hearts (and tummies) for these amazing humans that contribute so much to the Irvington community!

Special shout out to the amazing Barnett’s!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Irvington Community Council is pleased to announce the 2020 Founder’s Awards. Since 2011, the awards have recognized individuals, organizations, and businesses that have made significant contributions to the overall quality of life in Irvington. The awards are presented every week during the Historic Irvington Halloween Festival, held this year from October 24-31, 2020.

For twenty-seven years of keeping Irvington rolling, for anchoring the revitalization of Irvington, for promoting healthy lifestyles and the bicycle revolution, and for supporting the beloved Zombie Bike Ride and numerous other neighborhood events, the Council awards a Founder’s Award to Scott Irons, owner of Indy Cycle Specialist.

For thirteen years providing slices to Irvington, for making Irvington a destination, for providing walls and walls for so many Irvington artists, and for their tireless dedication to Irvington, the Council awards a Founder’s Award to Nancy Duncan and Mick McGrath and Bob and Laura Stark, owners of Jockamo’s Upper Crust Pizza.

For their tireless dedication to preserving the history and culture of Irvington, including their work with the Irvington Historical Society and their preservation of the Bona Thompson Memorial Center, the Council awards a Founder’s Award to Steve and Sue Barnett.

For her beautiful work that brightens so many Irvington homes and public spaces and for her dedication to keeping Irvington a community of artists, the Council awards a Founder’s Award to Laura Hildreth.

This year’s awards will be presented on Sunday, October 25, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at the Bona Thompson Memorial Center. Due to COVID-19, exact details of the event are still tentative. Plans also include an art show.

About the Irvington Halloween Festival
For 74 years, the Irvington Halloween Festival has brought tens of thousands of residents, neighborhood organizations, and business to a fun-filled celebration of our history and community. Organized by the Irvington Community Council, a 501(c)3 organization that provides a voice to Irvington, the festival and its associated events are designed to bring awareness to the community, to bring commerce to local businesses and sponsors, and to provide fun for the children and adults of Irvington and Indianapolis. The celebration is a week of events including a 5k run, bike rides, musicians, contests, storytelling, ghost tours, a masquerade ball, puppet shows, and a massive costumed street fair. More information on this year’s festival can be found at irvingtonhalloween.com.

Over the years, many articles of clothing have been donated to the Benton House. We asked Irvington Historical Society to help us with taking care of them, as they are so much more equipped to do so (in so many ways!). Look at this jewel they discovered in our collection!

Mystery Monday. Just a simple thing. Did you know that men's tuxedo jackets, the kind with tails, had pockets in those tails? We are working on a collection of vintage clothing from the Benton House and in it there are two cut away coats. One of them seems to have belonged to Hilton U Brown. Who was editor and President of the Bd of Directors of the Indianapolis News and President of the Board of Directors of Butler University. Dang it. There were no treasures in the pockets.

Today … vast pools of Siberian Scilla (1796) illuminate the lawn of the Benton House, 312 South Downey Avenue. The historic garden there displays species/cultivars of plants introduced to gardeners between 1600 - 1900. A green initiative of the Irvington Garden Club since 2008, the period garden is a perfect complement to the 1873 historic site.
Will the Easter Egg hunt take place this year?
