The Benton House

The Benton House The Benton House is located in the historic Irvington at 312 South Downey Avenue.
The house was purchased in 1966 by the Irvington Historic Landmarks Foundation as a meeting place for area clubs and can be used for private parties, wedding and retreats. All proceeds from these events go toward the maintenance of the Benton House and future renovations. In 1973 the home was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Benton House is also listed as an Indiana Museum. It is the only house on the National Register on the Indianapolis East Side listed in the Historic Register that is available to the public. Fire damages Irvington's Black Acre Brewing Co. on Washington Street

Our community was shaken this morning with a 2-alarm fire at Black Acre Brewing. While all of the other businesses were spared from the flames, they are definitely impacted.

Please show your support by shopping IRV local this weekend (well, forever really).

Black Acre is opening up their Biergarten on Bona (between Audubon and Ritter) today at 2 as well, if you want to show them some love!

Black Acre Brewing Co. on Washington Street in Irvington sustained damage after a Saturday morning fire.

We’d love your help for about an hour around 5pm on December 22nd...

As you all know, the amazing Luminaria is happening the evening of the 22nd and we’d appreciate any help in setting up and lighting the luminaries.

Please let us know if you can assist. Thanks in advance!

So many ideas for Christmas gifts! Join us today for our annual Holiday Bazaar! While your in the IRV, be sure to check out the Holiday Fair at the Bona, the craft and doll show at the church on the north circle, and all of our other wonderful shops and restaurants that this amazing neighborhood has to offer!

11/22/2019

While you are in IRV for the Bazaar at the Benton House and the Holiday Fair at the Bona, swing by and show your support for the IRV DQ. They are a long time supporter of The Benton House so we’d like to support them *especially* now.

Help them recoup their losses from having been robbed earlier in the month.

Let’s flood the place with support! And come on...you get ice cream out of the deal! (Or my favorite...Mister Misty Float and a hot dog!)

We hope to see you in Irv for at least one of these spooktacular events this week!

We know what it takes to put on an event. The fact that these volunteers put on multiple events over the course of 8 days is amazing. Planning has already started for 2020’s event before this year’s event has taken place.

Thank you Irvington Community Council and your The Historic Irvington Halloween Festival for knowing how to throw a party and for all you do for the community!

Here's your digital Week-at-a-Glance for this year's festival! You can get a more complete guide on our website (irvingtonhalloween.com), page, or by picking up this week's Weekly View community newspaper! #irvhalloween

We can not thank Irvington Community Council enough for this honor.

The ICC supports the neighborhood in so many ways. Thank you for including The Benton House in such a big way!

Since 2016, the Irvington Community Council has partnered with an Irvington landmark through the Legacy Fund Project - an annual initiative in which an Irvington landmark in need of repair has been given a donation of $10,000 to support repairs and restoration. The funds are generated through Council-sponsored events, including the annual Historical Halloween Festival.

This year the Irvington Community Council has proudly partnered with the historic Benton House through the Legacy Fund Project. The Benton House is an Irvington treasure built in 1873 and is a charming example of Second Empire architecture. The funds from the donation will be used to make necessary repairs this beautiful historic structure.

The 2016 recipient of the Legacy Award was the Friends of Irving Circle for repairs to the fountain, and the 2017 recipient was the Bona Thompson Memorial Center for exterior repairs.

(L to R: Matt Pleasant (ICC President), Andrew Mankauskus (Benton House caretaker), Megan Krol-Shultz (Benton House Manager), Lisa Watson (Benton House President), Emily Rawlinson (Benton House Board Member), Robert Uhlenhake (ICC) and Lesli Gibson (ICC Vice President).

Wonderful neighbors and friends, just a reminder that Jockamo Upper Crust Pizza Irvington is NOT a year-round book collection spot.

If you would like to donate books in the “off season”, please contact us to make sure we have our bin by the back door of the Benton House.

Thanks!

Today … vast pools of Siberian Scilla (1796) illuminate the lawn of the Benton House, 312 South Downey Avenue. The historic garden there displays species/cultivars of plants introduced to gardeners between 1600 - 1900. A green initiative of the Irvington Garden Club since 2008, the period garden is a perfect complement to the 1873 historic site.
Will the Easter Egg hunt take place this year?
