I want to take a moment to talk about a big loss in our family. My uncle Keithy passed away due to complications from COVID-19. I have a lot of great memories from my childhood of my Dad and uncle keithy playing tricks on people and telling the craziest tall tales. He was always smiling and laughing. If you see this post please share a good memory of him. Especially if you grew up with him. Share photos too if you have them. Keithy was a loving devoted Father who loved wood working, hunting, fishing and metal detecting. I have recent memories of seeing his posts in the metal detecting group that I invited him too about a year ago. He would always post photos of his findings. I'm really going to miss seeing his posts.

In an effort to keep myself busy while my Kizzie is in the hospital, I did some research on some of the houses that the Johnson side lived in. These houses are not known to most of us. That being said, they are STILL the houses that built us. They belonged to grandpa Johnson's Parents and Grandparents. But surprisingly, they are houses that we have drove or walked past, never knowing that we would not be here if it weren't for a small piece of history in these houses. We might not have memories of family dinners there, first steps, first kisses on the front porches or tearful goodbyes, but our Grandfather/Grandmother and Great Grandfather/Great Grandmother were the one's to experience these memories. It was their time! Their Present, not knowing that we were their future! I think that's an incredibly powerful thought.

This is a photo dump of just my Dad's side of the family. I felt so much happiness when I was looking through these photos. I miss this... And I know I'm not the only one. I miss the excitement I would feel as a kid when it was Friday afternoon and we would go to Mcdonalds(only day of the week we ate out) and after that, we would go to Grandma and grandpa's house. The memories I have from those weekends are some of my most prized childhood memories. I could type them all out now, but this post would never end! Please tag yourselves and share some memories!!!

I recently inherited several family photos that belonged to my Mom(Theresa O'Neal) and Dad(Charles Johnson). I thought I should share them with everyone on this blog since you all and they all, are leaves of my family tree. If you aren't related, I will adopt you. (: This particular group of photos are carefully placed in an ugly green photo album that I remember flipping through when I was a kid, wondering who some of the face were. Now, as an adult, I know who most of these people are and it means so much more to me. As a child, I remember thinking these faces were known as friends to my parents. Now I realize that these people are the same people that I have been constantly researching, trying to get a glimpse of what their lives were like. Maybe these albums are part of why I research my family tree so much. This particular post includes photos of my Mom's side. If you see yourself, please comment below. Some of the photos that I will be posting are unknown to me but I bet some of you know them. Please give feedback if possible. Thank you.

Happy Easter Family and Friends!!! You guys remember those awesome Easters in the 80s and 90s? I have so many memories of waking up to an easter basket with a pastel outfit, loud smokey kitchens lol and being sooooo excited for the egg hunt. This is a photo of my husband's family in the late 80s. Check out that dapper suit my husband is wearing. Always so handsome. 😍

So I need some help finding a particular line on my Dad's side that has been driving me crazy for close to a year. This is a mystery for sure! Did he change his name? Did he kill a man? Was he raised by Native American's? Was he brought here by Aliens? Lol. 🀷

Moses or Mose Earl Austin, Great Grandpa of Grandma Mary Katherine Johnson/Austin. He was born in the mid 1800s but I cannot find one single record of him prior to about 1900ish. Recently, I was contacted by another Genealogy nerd, like myself, who has also been searching for Moses Austin's past for a very long time. Her name is Mayme DuBois. We have swapped quite a bit of info, but now we are both still just as confused as we already were. Lol

So we need any help we can get! If you have any stories at all, any photos, documents, leads, please please comment!!

This is George Washington Austin's Dad. Ellen Priscilla Walker was his wife. My new long lost Cousin, Mayme's Great Great Grandpa was Thomas "jack" Austin. below are some photos and news articles that might help.

While researching my Grandfather Charles (Don) Johnson's family line, I came across a 2nd great uncle who's life ended in a very tragic way. William Loutt, who was My Grandpa's uncle, was crushed to death while working as a train engineer. I cant imagine the heartache that this caused.

So you meant to tell me that you lost your wallet that contained $190 in the 1850s and you wanna offer a $20 reward for it's return?

Would you turn it in? πŸ€”

P.s. Jeremiah Morgan was on my Dad's side and was married to a Native American woman. Their son died in the trail of tears. More to come.

I decided to research a bit about a house that I lived in for a short time when I was a baby. 1021 Reisner Street. I have very few memories of this house but what I do remember is pretty vivid. I thought it would be interesting to see what news stories might pop up. Interestingly, there was a death in the house, which I always wondered. Most interesting was that a man "accidentally" shot his wife while cleaning his rifle at the table. Other than that, all I could find was "for sale" adds. I was disappointed to not find an article about a big metal fan falling on my head at 2 years old which lead to a large scar and about 200 stitches along with a lengthy hospital stay. Kids getting hurt wasn't a big deal in the 80s. Lol.

Well family, turns out we have a witch in the family. I always knew I was a little strange!

We are related through my Mom's side, following the O'neal line.

No really guys! We are related to John Proctor. He was executed on the 1692 Salem Massachusetts Witch Trials. He was innocent of witchcraft but was accused and found guilty. It really is a very tragic story, as is all of the other victim's stories. His story is the inspiration for the filming of "The Crucible". I am embarrassed to say that I have not watched it. Below are some photos and facts about John Proctor.

"1549 and 1550 New York Street"

After posting about my Grandma and Grandpa's house yesterday, I started looking at houses that my Husband (Brandon Turpin) lived in. He spent his early childhood living on New York Street in String town. String town is a very historic area of the city so I was hoping to find a few interesting things. What I found was actually a lot more interesting then I expected!

Along with a whole slew of colorful characters who lived there over the years, it seems that quite a few funerals took place in the home. It also seems that a few people died in the home as well. Oddly, Multiple people who lived in the home over the years injured others in accidental ways. One teenage boy was shot with a shotgun that was being cleaned by another teenager who lived there. The shot was not fatal. Multiple other people who lived at the house hit people with cars! One victim was only 6 years old. The driver was John C. smith who also hit ANOTHER pedestrian downtown. I also looked up Brandon's Grandma's house that was just across the street and learned that her home was once used as a church as well as a dry cleaning business.

Turpin/Long family, what are some other addresses that you can give me? I'd love to read and post the history!

"The houses that built us"

A lot of my Dad's side will recognise this house and the vacant spot where another well known house used to sit. A lot of my Mom's side will recognise them too because my parents often brought my Mom's nieces and nephews there over the years. This is Grandma and Grandpa's house on Lambert Street and Uncle Danny and Aunt Debbie's house on Hiatt. As kids, all of the Grand kids ran back and forth between these 2 houses that sat side by side. We would hide behind Grandpa's bushes and run from headlights during a game we named, "hit the deck". Our whole family would gather here every single weekend. I remember it being loud, crowded and smokey but I would do anything to go back to watching Grandma make Grandpa a full course breakfast, gathering for gifts on Christmas and listening to the adults laugh and tell stories around the kitchen table. I know I'm not alone when I say, these houses helped build me into who I am today.

There is a lot that we all know about these houses. But did you know that Grandma and Grandpa's house was owned by Charles Jefferson and Marie Nancy Shotts (Grandpa's Mom and Dad) before they left it to Grandpa? Ok I'm sure a lot of you knew that. But did you know that in 1930, a woman named Mary Ann Zumwalt died in the house? πŸ‘» Her husband was Christian Zumwalt and he owned the geocery store that became "the store room" at Debbie and Danny's house. Although he passed away in 1929 at the hospital, Mary Ann died in the home of complications with diabetes. So all of those stories we were told about that house being haunted might be true after all. 😬

We were told a lot of stories about the house on Hiatt being haunted and stories about gangsters and police shooting people there. I haven't found those articles yet, but I did find a bunch of news articles about fatal accidents that happened on the corner of Lambert and Hiatt. I also found an article that says a funeral took place in a lodge on Hiatt and Lambert. So I would assume that the "lodge" was the old store room. But I will continue to look. While the store was there, the house was rented out a lot over the years. I'll update this if I find anything. And as always, please comment any information or stories you might have. ❀

In 1967, This man robbed the liquor store on Morris Street and crashed his car into a another car and a porch on Lambert and Hiatt Street. That porch was Matt Bailey's porch. Matt Bailey is the Father of my beloved Aunt Debby and the Grandfather of a group of my cousins. Does anyone remember hearing about this? Does anyone recall Aunt Debby telling this story of her childhood home?

Everyone, meet Daniel Montague! Another person that isn't attached to me by blood, but is attached to my Sister's fiance, Rich Huhn. Through this blog, I've been asked to help with a few family trees that are connected to me through my loved ones and I feel so fortunate to be able to help.

Daniel Montague should be honored! He is an American war hero and was one of 8 volunteer crew men who sank the USS Marrimac during the Spanish-American war. The ship was ordered to be sank in an effort to block the spanish fleet in Santiago Harbor in Cuba.

Ralph C. Anderson and Levanche O. Anderson (Dick)

They are my Great Grandparents on my Mom's side. I wish I knew more about them. I remember hearing stories about my Mom (Theresa) and her siblings (Fanonda and Melvin) spending time with them in Clay County Indiana. They are both buried in Wilkinson Cemetery where most of that side of the family was laid to rest, along side my Mom and Dad (Charles). This is the only photo I have ever seen of them and I have to say, I see such a strong resemblance in Great Grandma and Grandma Ruth O'neal.

If anyone has any other photos of them, PLEASE post then here. πŸ’œ

Mose or Moses Austin is the grandfather of my Grandma Johnson. Not only does he look like a total badass but he has the newspaper trail to prove that he is!

He literally shot his daughter's estranged husband with a shotgun because he was terrorizing his household and scaring his family. After the incident, he went down to the police station and turned himself in. It was deemed self defense and the guy who got shot ended up in jail instead of Moses.

On the other side of the law, he received a public intoxication charge. He and a friend of his decided to park their car on a sidewalk in the town of mitchell Indiana. Unfortunately the police tend to frown upon that.

He died at the age of 84 due to a fractured hip. He was well respected in the Bedford and Mitchell area.

In light of talking about Lorna Anderson, I thought it was necessary to talk about Lorna Rene O'Neal next.

Although she passed away a year before I was born, I grew up hearing so many wonderful loving stories about her. Much like Lorna Anderson, Lorna O'Neal lost her life very early and also in a tragic way.

Lorna was born with Cerebral Palsy which kept her wheelchair bound and unable to be independent. I grew up hearing stories about my Mom taking her places and how Grandma used to let the kids help feed her. She could only eat by g-tube. Sadly, she passed away at the age of 11 due to complications from her disability. But not all of her tragedy was based around her disabilities. When Lorna was only 4 or 5 years old, Her Father's body was found on the side of a road. He had suffered a fall from a bridge while he was very intoxicated. I grew up hearing speculation that he may have been pushed. It seems that he lived a wild life.

My oldest Daughter is named after both of these Lornas who had such a tragic end. It just so happens that my Lorna was born at 23 weeks gestation and weighed only 1 lb and 1 oz. I remember crying my eyes out, saying that the name Lorna is cursed. I've since come to the realization that my Lorna did so well and overcame everything BECAUSE of that name. They met a tragic end and she met a tragic beginning that ended up being a victory. All while her 2 Aunts were watching over her. While visiting their graves with my Lorna, I looked down and read the date of death for Lorna O'Neal and gasped. She died on September 16th which is also my Lorna's Birthday. That has to mean something.

I've always felt somehow connected to her. I even named my first born daughter after her. My Grandma Ruth named her youngest daughter after her. Grandma Ruth was her Sister.

Her name is Lorna Rae Anderson and she died due to a skull fracture that she received while she was a passenger in a high speed police chase at 19 years old. The driver was a 24 year old man. The car was a stollen rental car. According to the Indianapolis news paper, Lorna was trapped in the burning car. This is actually the first time that I have seen the news paper story and it's even more heart breaking than I imagined.

I have heard bits and pieces through the years and I want to include some of the unconfirmed stories. Lorna Rae Anderson was a "change of life baby". Her Mother was older and finished with having children so Lorna was kind of left to do what she pleased. This may be the reason that she chose such questionable friends. She was a Mother to 2 young girls at the time of her death. I have grown up to know both women as my Aunts and my impression is that they were such happy, positive and beautiful women. One of these amazing women has passed away, but the other is still here, last I heard. Although it has been years since I have seen her, I hope she is doing well.

"Handsome Howard Johnson, the jail breaking murder accomplice"

Howard is my 3rd great uncle on my Dad's side. He is the great uncle of Charles Donald Johnson, just to narrow it down.

Apparently, he was married or in a serious relationship and had a side piece😲. From what I can put together through newspaper articles, he and his mistress, Ella LaPointe, were involved in the shooting death of his wife, or possibly his girlfriend, Florence Besancon. They were both apprehended, and spent time in prison. Ella, who was the actual killer, was released from prison early with a pardon, go figureπŸ™„. Howard, on the other hand, escaped from prison. Yes, you read that right. He was caught again and finished his sentence. He lived out a very long life and passed away at 87 years old.

I was able to find that Ella spent time in the Indianapolis Women's Prison. Howard was in prison in Michigan, I believe.
