This pair of penguin alebrijes is ready for their close up! Hand-carved by Avelino Pérez, one struts in a polka dot dress and red bow, the other’s all bundled up in a cozy scarf and beanie, caught mid gossip like old friends catching up. 🦉 Handcarved Owl Alebrije

A tiny guardian of the night, carved from copal wood and painted by hand in Oaxaca. Deep purple wings unfold in peacock-feather patterns, while a crimson face blooms with wildflowers in blue, coral, and white. Perched on butter-yellow feet with rose-tipped talons pure Oaxacan magic in miniature. 🌸✨

This hand carved dog alebrije has plenty to say! The carving is angular and beautifully proportioned, with clean geometric lines that give the figure a thoroughly contemporary feel. A cascading alphabet of calligraphy letters in varying fonts. The letterforms become a pattern, the pattern becomes a texture, and the whole composition flows across the angular form with the confidence of a master graphic designer. Oaxacan wood carving at its best!

Luis Pablo carved this mother and baby chameleon from a single uninterrupted piece of copal wood. No assembly, no joins. The mother arches protectively over her young, and the two exist in completely different color worlds, amber and orange on the mother, cobalt blue on the baby.
In the Zapotec toná calendar, the chameleon is a spirit guardian assigned at birth. An animal that sees in two directions at once and moves with total patience. A fitting choice for a mother watching over her young.
Luis Pablo’s candle is on the base, as always. What animal is your toná?

Beautiful handcrafted wire lizard made in Mexico available at Sandia Folk. The male red-headed rock agama (Agama agama) is one of Africa’s most electric lizards with its scarlet head and cobalt body isn’t an artist’s invention, they’re exactly what he looks like in breeding season.
Every loop placed by hand, no two exactly alike, the whole form built up from nothing but patience and a pair of pliers.
