Beautiful handcrafted wire lizard made in Mexico available at Sandia Folk. The male red-headed rock agama (Agama agama) is one of Africa’s most electric lizards with its scarlet head and cobalt body isn’t an artist’s invention, they’re exactly what he looks like in breeding season.
Every loop placed by hand, no two exactly alike, the whole form built up from nothing but patience and a pair of pliers.

Three tlacuaches working the mercado — one panadero with a basket piled high, one flower seller with a fresh bouquet, and the globero holding up a sky’s worth of color. A whole street scene in miniature, handmade in paper mâché by Antonio Alonso, and every detail is alive. All three are available at Sandia Folk, where you’ll find them ready to take their corner of the mercado home with you. 🎈🌸🥐

Fabulous rabbit by Oaxacan woodcarving artist Angel Matias.

The face is painted in distinct geometric zones, each with its own fine pattern fitted together like marquetry; it has the jeweled, precious quality of a Fabergé egg.

The body’s sweeping bands of color, each filled with its own pattern, flow across the form like valleys full of spring flowers seen from above!

Wonderful by Oaxacan artist Francisca Calvo.

Crows are among the most intelligent and watchful of birds—curious, loyal to their flock, and known to remember human faces for years. Francisca captures this perfectly: her copal wood crow stands with wings spread and beak raised, alert and fully present, as if sizing up a situation before anyone else even notices.

🐢 This striking hand carved sea turtle feels like a little piece of Northwest Coast mythology come to life. The smooth, stylized body becomes a moving canvas of bold black, white, red, and green, echoing the graphic power of Indigenous Pacific-Northwest design.

What a lovely capybara sculpture by the talented Oaxacan woodcarving artist, Luis Pablo! This figure is wonderfully carved, with so much character and charm. The coloring and painting are superb! Did you know that the capybara is a giant cavy rodent native to South America?
