August 30, 2017 at 1pm Mrs. Ida Brace Cook age 107 will be laid to rest in Hillside Cemetery next to her beloved husband Gordon Cook a relative of Revolutionary War Soldier Lemuel Cook of Clarendon. Please join us for a graveside service if you are able. I had the great pleasure of meeting Ida last year and she was a lovely person. She had a wonderful life and we will celebrate her.

I love it when people come and spend time in the cemetery. This was a team effort by three lovely ladies.

Perfect timing today as there were people in the cemetery from Arizona visiting graves and I got to show them our Titanic survivors grave and the grave of our only Orleans County soldier to die in battle at Gettysburg during the Civil War.

Hillside Heritage Events will include a series of evening lectures, sans technology, inside the chapel itself at Hillside Cemetery, outside the village of Holley. Lectures begin at 7:00 PM and are free, though donations to the restoration fund are gladly accepted.

Oct. 26th – GCC Associate Dean of the Orleans County Campus Centers and Historian Jim Simon will present “The Philosophy of History: What Does it Matter?”
Nov. 2nd – GCC Associate Professor Derek Maxfield will present “Victorian death and the Civil War.”
Ticket sales for the basket raffle will continue into November. Call 585-638-6371 x104 to learn how you can buy tickets. Several great themed baskets have been donated by local businesses and residents including Stoney Meadows Alpacas & Fiber Boutique, Dr. Daniel Schiavone, DDS, Wiley’s Animal Ark Animal Care, Brigden Memorials, Hurds Orchards, White Farm Bed & Breakfast and others.

These events are part of an on-going fund raising campaign by the Clarendon Historical Society with the goal of restoring the chapel to once again make it available for public use with anticipated uses to be lectures, art exhibits, concerts and historical displays. The Town of Clarendon recently received a grant of $20,000 from the Rochester Area Community Foundation.

Thank you for your wonderful website. I was able to find my old friend, Henry Dwight Bliss on it and info going all the way back to his GREAT GRANDFATHER who was born in 1854. Thank you for your great information and easy-to-access site!
Hello to all of you. I'm in Western Colorado and originally from Wyoming. My mother, born in Cody, Wyoming, knew little to nothing about her family origins other than that her mother and grandmother were born in New York State. My mother passed away 10 years ago and since then I have become an almost rabid genealogist. In doing research I've found family members in Hillside. They lived in the area beginning in the mid 1800s What a lovely place! I just found the website and this page today for Hillside. The chapel is beautiful and I'm so happy to see that it is being restored. I have to wonder if my great, great grandparents, Henry Robb and Anna Fuller Robb had the service for their daughter that died at a young age (Maggie Robb Williamson) in the chapel. I also wonder if Anna had Henry's service there. If they saw what I see when I look at the pictures, when they were holding a funeral for their loved ones. I wonder if there is any way to get chapel records, and also records of burials. I've not been able to find one of Henry and Anna Robb's daughter's burial and I believe that she was likely buried with her parents and sisters in Hillside. I Hope to visit the area and my ancestor's graves in the near future. So happy to have found this page.
