Nick Engelbert's Grandview

Nick Engelbert's Grandview The grounds are open from dawn until dusk; the museum is open by appointment. Many of the statues have been restored or recreated.

In 1937, after his children were grown, Nick Engelbert began to build an elaborate arched porch of concrete around the front entrance of his farmhouse, ultimately covering every inch of the outside surface of the house with concrete inlaid with shards of china, glass, beads, buttons, and sea shells. Over the next 15 years, Nick created more than 40 concrete sculptures in his yard, combining patrio

tic themes with imagery from history, fairy tales, mythology and his own imagination. At the age of 70, no longer able to make sculptures, he turned to painting, producing over 200 oils before his death in 1962. The Grandview site is now owned and operated by the Pecatonica Educational Charitable (PEC) Foundation, Inc. The house, now a museum, contains many Engelbert artifacts, family memorabilia, and copies of Nick's paintings.

A large crowd of people hoping to collect a piece of Toronto history gathered outside the ;Leslieville dollhouse' Sunday, as the new owners of the beloved east-end home gave away the dolls, toys, knick-knacks, and teddy bears that covered the property.

Our friends in Monroe County are having a great event this weekend.

Art Outdoors at the Wegner Grotto is coming up THIS SATURDAY, August 24th. Come and go from 10am-3pm. All skill and age levels are encouraged to attend.

This family-friendly event includes exploring one of Wisconsin’s fascinating art environments, the Wegner Grotto, and creating art in the out-doors. Three art activities will be available to visitors: clay sculpting, mosaic making, and painting with pastels.

This event is made possible through the support of the Wisconsin Arts Board and Ruth Arts Foundation. There is no fee for this event, but a $1.00 per person donation is greatly appreciated to defray remaining programming costs and help support the Wegner Grotto.

The Wegner Grotto County Park is located at 7788 Daylight Road, Sparta, Wisconsin. 15 minutes north of Sparta off Hwy 27, west on Hwy 71, south of Cataract. For more information call 608-269-8680.
