The Historic Hernando School has been in existance since the early 1800's in one form or another. The original schoolhouse was built by the original founding families. But, in the late 30's, the town decided it WPA architect, Henry Taylor, was approved. Among his famous structures is the Vinoy Hotel in St Petersburg, FL. The Hisotirc Hernando School exhibits this same level of craftsmanship and quality. Completed in the 1940's, the elegant colonial revival soon became the local gathering place and centerpiece of the town. Though Hernando was the last town in Citrus County to get a red brick school, it was one of the first to have an integrated one.

Mission: The Hernando Heritage Council, a division of the Citrus County Historical Society, was formed to represent the Heritage in the Hernando area of the county. Their main project is the restoration of the Historic Hernando Schoolhouse. They host a plethora of fundraising events throughought the year to raise money for this project. Once competed, the school will serve as a museum and community center.

This film documents a group of skiers as they make a 17-day trip on water skis from St. Petersburg, Florida, to the 1964 New York World's Fair. Along the way they promote St. Petersburg as a town for "young and old alike." The narrator, Communications Chief Jim Gray, describes the intention of the trip, the difficulties the skiers and boat drivers encounter and each place the skiers stop and speak with the press. The skiers go south through Venice and Fort Myers before cutting across the state via the Okeechobee Waterway. The group then travels up Florida's Atlantic coast, stopping in Jensen Beach, New Smyrna Beach, Jacksonville Beach and Fernandina. They continue along the coast stopping in other states before reaching the Statue of Liberty and New York City. This 1,600 mile trip by amateur skiers ends with a performance at the World's Fair Marina. View the entire film on Florida Memory.

Only four days after the official transfer of La Florida from Spain to the young United States in 1821, the first two Florida counties were created and encompassed the entire state.

St. Johns and Escambia county may have been the first but they wouldn't be the last. Between 1822 and 1925 the other 65 Florida counties would be added, the final being Gilchrist County.

Volunteers are working hard at the museum to digitize and preserve all the photos in the archives. Sometimes, we come across a great photo with unidentified people or unfamiliar places. We want to share some of these great pictures from throughout Citrus County and we'd love it if you could help us learn more about photos in our collections.

Odds are if we're posting a photo we're at our wit's end!

Robert E. Lee was born in Virginia #OnThisDay, January 19, 1807, 211 years ago. Receiving his education at the United States Military Academy at West Point, Lee graduated 2nd in a class of 46 in 1829. Along with four of his classmates, Lee completed his studies at West Point without earning a single demerit. Entering the Army’s Corps of Engineers, Lee went on to have an exemplary career, constructing fortifications and serving as one of Winfield Scott’s most capable aides in Mexico. When the Civil War began in 1861, Lee chose to side with the South. After commanding Confederate forces in West Virginia in the war’s early months, Lee became Jefferson Davis’s military adviser in Richmond. When Gen. Joseph E. Johnson was wounded during the Peninsular Campaign in June 1862, Lee was chosen to replace him. Embarking on a bold counter-offensive, Lee drove Gen. George McClellan’s army away from Richmond. He then turned north and defeated John Pope at Second Manassas. Lee commanded the legendary Army of Northern Virginia throughout the remainder of the war, earning further victories at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville and stymying Federal attempts to capture Richmond before finally surrendering to Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865, at Appomattox Court House. #PhotoCredit Colorizedhistory

55 years ago this morning it was 18° at Tampa International Airport. The coldest temperature EVER recorded in Tampa. Not sure we will see it that cold again in our life time. Too much growth around the airport which has literally made a heat island. Check out the other frigid lows from around the area. It's tough to even imagine it was that cold.
