The original schoolhouse was built by the original founding families. But, in the late 30's, the town decided it WPA architect, Henry Taylor, was approved. Among his famous structures is the Vinoy Hotel in St Petersburg, FL. The Hisotirc Hernando School exhibits this same level of craftsmanship and quality. Completed in the 1940's, the elegant colonial revival soon became the local gathering place and centerpiece of the town. Though Hernando was the last town in Citrus County to get a red brick school, it was one of the first to have an integrated one.

Mission: The Hernando Heritage Council, a division of the Citrus County Historical Society, was formed to represent the Heritage in the Hernando area of the county. Their main project is the restoration of the Historic Hernando Schoolhouse. They host a plethora of fundraising events throughought the year to raise money for this project. Once competed, the school will serve as a museum and community center.

Florida's 39th Governor, John Wayne Mixson, passed away on July 8 at the age of 98. Mixson began his career in state politics as a legislator, representing his home county of Jackson and the surrounding area in the Florida House of Representatives from 1967 to 1978. He was elected lieutenant governor in 1978 on a ticket with Governor Bob Graham, and reelected in 1982. In 1986, Governor Graham was elected to the United States Senate and, in accordance with Florida's resign-to-run law, stepped down from the governorship on January 3, 1987, three days before his term was set to expire. Mixson, as lieutenant governor, took Graham's place, serving the remaining three days of the term until newly elected Governor Bob Martinez was sworn in. Mixson's tenure as governor was short, but he signed several appointments, held a Cabinet meeting, and even stayed in the Governor's Mansion with his wife Margie. Series S1841 at the State Archives of Florida documents Governor Mixson's brief administration, including photographs, appointment letters and speeches from his inauguration.

This film documents a group of skiers as they make a 17-day trip on water skis from St. Petersburg, Florida, to the 1964 New York World's Fair. Along the way they promote St. Petersburg as a town for "young and old alike." The narrator, Communications Chief Jim Gray, describes the intention of the trip, the difficulties the skiers and boat drivers encounter and each place the skiers stop and speak with the press. The skiers go south through Venice and Fort Myers before cutting across the state via the Okeechobee Waterway. The group then travels up Florida's Atlantic coast, stopping in Jensen Beach, New Smyrna Beach, Jacksonville Beach and Fernandina. They continue along the coast stopping in other states before reaching the Statue of Liberty and New York City. This 1,600 mile trip by amateur skiers ends with a performance at the World's Fair Marina. View the entire film on Florida Memory.

Only four days after the official transfer of La Florida from Spain to the young United States in 1821, the first two Florida counties were created and encompassed the entire state.

St. Johns and Escambia county may have been the first but they wouldn't be the last. Between 1822 and 1925 the other 65 Florida counties would be added, the final being Gilchrist County.
