Almost 15,000 visitors to HDG.....wow it must of been a very cool time to live here!!!! Havre de Grace was the only place in the USA where one could come, bet on horse races, and drink "legally or illegally" during Prohibition. Our Governor at the time campaigned on not recognizing Prohibition and refusing to enforce it. From 1919 - 1931 the Feds only came to HDG three times. Many made their money off of pushing booze up and down the river, on the trains, on the roads, and it was even being flown right into the racetrack itself. Al Capone came here often as it was his favorite vacation spot. In the movie The Sting, The Graw Racetrack was mentioned as they did their famous sting on the horse races! Many gamblers loaded the downtown streets, and the many pool and gambling halls, where folks bet on the races. The McLhinney Family has the last set of these betting boards as far as we know. Almost everyone made money off their homes making them into boarding houses, making booze, and taking advantage of the 15,000 visitors each racing season! (Photo taken on second Floor of McLhinney/Remax Building, untouched since the era, prior to remodel for upcoming brew pub. The second floor is where all the action and gambling took place. The third floor was once the original Mason Lodge and perhaps something else...lol.)

So interesting how the City is making us do something, and sign a legal document, they have not made any other business sign. Gets old watching these fellas operate. So the sign that has been in front of McLhinney's since the 1920s is in question. Only two other signs exist in downtown like this, Golls and Lyons. Neither were asked to sign this form. They want a signed contract for a lease agreement to have the sign over the city's right a way. They want us to hire an engineer. Interesting that no other business is being asked to do so. They didn't even advise the family they were going to be discussing it at the next council meeting to allow us to be present to represent ourselves and provide valuable input. Instead we get threatening mail from the city attorney. This city and her lawyers are a piece of work. You can not make deals with tenants without the permission of the owners. They should have contacted me directly before the council meeting and provided all the information regarding this matter. Three management heads being paid the big bucks and this is how they handle business? Then again....ya think the Mayor is out to get someone who points out his many failures? Lying about 4th carnival, breaking up two long time organizations to put his people in place, bullying elders at council meetings, losing our hospital, losing the deal with Bulle Rock...but he sure has his disco lights in the street. Do they have to sign a lease agreement for their own lights? I saw a man almost trip and fall when the lights came on one night as he walked on top of one. Smart? Not really. Do all the businesses that have metal awnings and signs have the same agreement? NO just the McLhinney building. Interesting isn't it? I can hear our grandfather and father now. Town clowns.......

Pat O’Brien’s daughter continues longtime tradition at racetrack winner’s circle

My friend......"A little tidbit about my dear friend and neighbor Ma O’Brien who passed away yesterday. Also known as Baja! She was a true hero volunteering countless hours teaching at the Boys and Girls Club of Rosarito, The Theatre and Arts and many other organizations. She helped raise millions of dollars by doing the MS 3 Day 50 mile walk every year. She too had MS and still did that walk in her 80’s. She made the world a better place for many of us! Rest In Peace dear sweet Ma!"

On this FB page I have her dad being interviewed about the Prohibition era and the Mafia in Hollywood. It is a great and funny interview with Pat and James Cagney. I was lucky enough to have someone give me a room of wallpaper left over from when her parents decorated their home.

Was hoping the guys find some little corner in the brew pub's Speakeasy Museum to use this wallpaper. The story behind it would be so cool.

Racing royalty was in the Del Mar winner’s circle to crown the victors of the Pat O’Brien Stakes on Aug. 24.

Thursday, Dec. 3, 2020. Noon - 2 PM

Virtual Event

Zoom Invite - Join us - info at bottom of this post
page Invite - Watch us live - leave your message!

Tomorrow is the day! Friends and businesses in downtown Havre de Grace will join the Goll Family as we invite the community to share this post and to join us to celebrate their official 90th year in business! Join in on our virtual celebration!

We could not let this day go by without thanking Mr. Bobby Goll, Sr. and Co. for their years of dedication to making Havre de Grace sweeter!

On Thursday, at 12 noon, Mr. Bobby Goll, Sr. will arrive to kick off the celebration, he has no idea what we have planned, as the community, community officials, and a few friends check in and help kick off our version of "Mr. Goll Day!"

The event is being held "Covid style" as we are encouraging no contact. Of course, we will try to operate a normal operation that day as we expect our normal customers to stop by. We will fill the streets with German music for those who would like to watch from a distance. Best view though....is online!

Friends, family, and customers near and far are invited to participate through posting messages and videos on this Facebook Thread, the videos would sure be fun, or by joining the Zoom event (details at bottom of this post.)

At 12:30 PM we will host the Zoom event for community members to thank and speak to Mr. Goll virtually!

Local government officials will speak to Mr. Goll and award him various accolades from local organizations and governments. The German Society of Maryland will make a special presentation and German music will fill the streets of Havre de Grace from noon until 2 PM.

There will be surprise giveaways, and an interview and giveaways on WHGM Radio during their 7-8 AM hour, and some free Goll's favorite goodies to customers who arrive as usual and who call in to the radio!

For more information on the event phone 760-200-6215.
