Hastings on Hudson UFSD

Dear Hastings Community,

On Sunday, June 7, 2020 Governor Cuomo issued Executive Order 202.39, which extended the deadline for the receipt of mailed absentee ballots for the school budget vote/school board election until June 16, 2020 at 5 PM. Executive Order 202.39 also states that no hand delivered ballots may be accepted by the District Clerk later than 5 PM on June 9, 2020. The Hastings community may drop off their ballots only on Tuesday, June 9, between 9 AM and 5 PM at the main entrance to Hastings High School, One Mount Hope Blvd., Hastings-on-Hudson, NY.

Finally, it states that any ballots contained within the District’s locked ballot box “shall remain unopened pending delivery of mailed ballots, and shall be removed and canvassed after 5 PM on June 16, 2020”. Accordingly, based upon the Executive Order, the opening and counting of oath/ballot envelopes with absentee ballots sealed therein is postponed until after 5PM on June 16, 2020.

The opening and canvassing of ballots will be shown live on the District’s page https://www.facebook.com/hohschools beginning at 5 PM on June 16, 2020.

Please note, that after June 9, 2020 no further ballots will be issued to the registered voters.

In summation:

· Ballots may be dropped off in the secure lockbox at Hastings High School, One Mount Hope Blvd., between 9AM and 5:00 PM on Tuesday, June 9th.

· After that time, ballots may only be received by U.S. Mail until 5 PM on Tuesday, June 16th.

Sincerely,

Hastings-on-Hudson UFSD

Get the Facts About the Proposed School Budget!
Tuesday, June 3, from 5-6 pm

The Hastings PTSA and SEPTA are co-hosting a virtual forum to help people in the community get the facts about the proposed budget.

During this forum, questions from the community will be answered by District Treasurer Maureen Caraballo, Assistant Superintendent Melissa Szymanski, and Superintendent Dr. Valerie Henning-Piedmonte. The only way to get the facts is to go to the source!

All questions must be submitted in advance. The PTSA and SEPTA will forward the questions to administrators in advance of the forum to maximize the amount of information shared out to the community. Submit your questions HERE.

Please note that this vote is more important than previous budget votes. In a typical year, schools districts have two chances to pass a budget. Given the timing forced on districts by COVID-19, it appears that districts will not get a second opportunity to pass the budget. Unless Governor Cuomo or the legislature acts, a failed budget vote would likely force the adoption of a contingency budget (a legal term that requires significant additional cuts from the budget).

In Hastings on Hudson, a contingency budget would require removing an additional $1.3 million from the budget. This would be on top of the $1 million in spending that was cut from the current proposed budget between March and May in response to learning that NYS will cut crucial funding next year.

Please do not miss this opportunity to get the facts and learn about the importance of this particular vote:

Message from the Superintendent of Schools, May 15, 2020

Dear Hastings Families,

I hope that this letter finds you in good health. Thank you for reaching out to the Board of Education or me, to report issues related to the use of our track, fields, and courts. As we have more sunny and warm days, Reynolds Field will become even more popular. Social distancing and wearing a mask is crucial to preventing the spread of COVID-19. We want to do all that we can to ensure that we reinforce safety measures relative to the use of our recreational spaces. Below are more details about additional measures that we have taken to ensure that the tennis courts are used safely by residents. There is also more information about the parades that have been planned.

Use of the Reynolds Field Tennis Courts
Due to the influx of non-residents who took over the tennis courts to offer lessons, a security guard has been assigned to monitor the tennis courts. He will be there Monday-Friday from 8:00-3:00. Additional signage is displayed to emphasize the courts are for residents. To prove that you are a resident, please show your Village of Hasting tennis permit or another form of identification with your address. If there are any issues that you wish to report about our track, fields or courts, please email our Director of Facilities, Joseph Martorana at [email protected].

School Parades
We look forward to the upcoming parades which are scheduled as follows:

May 22, 11:00am, Farragut Middle School
May 29, 11:00am, Hillside Elementary School
June 5, 11:00am, Hastings High School

Chief David Dosin has been an amazing partner in planning the upcoming parades. Mayor Niki Armacost’s incredible support of the schools during the COVID-19 outbreak is greatly appreciated. These parades are possible because of their endorsement.

While we enjoy the parades, we implore everyone to please exercise social distancing practices and wear a mask or a face covering. Families will view the parade from their lawn while waving to the cars driven by Hastings faculty and staff. Everyone in cars must remain in their cars.

The caravan of cars, escorted by our Hastings Police Department, will drive slowly past all homes. If your street is not on the map, please join the parade on any main thoroughfare. Please exercise social distancing and please wear a mask or face covering.

While a parade won’t change the impact that COVID-19 has had on our society, we will remember that simple expressions of joy seen through smiles and tears while glancing at people who we love--your children, will be our prize for the day.

On behalf of the Hastings Board of Education, thank you for your support and assistance.

Warm regards,

Valerie Henning-Piedmonte

Hastings-on-Hudson UFSD Appoints Ms. Jennifer Spirelli as Farragut Middle School Principal Effective July 1, 2020

March 31, 2020 - Hastings-on-Hudson, NY: The Hastings-on-Hudson UFSD Board of Education is pleased to announce that Ms. Jennifer Spirelli was unanimously appointed principal of Farragut Middle School (FMS) at the March 30, 2020 BOE meeting. Ms. Spirelli will begin her role on July 1, 2020. The opportunity became available upon the notice of retirement by long-time educator and FMS Principal of 21 years, Ms. Gail Kipper.

“I’m honored and thrilled to join the staff of Farragut Middle School as the new principal,” expressed Ms. Spirelli. “I’m very passionate about education and I look forward to partnering with the families and staff to provide our students with a rigorous, engaging, and high-quality middle school experience that nurtures their social-emotional and academic learning.” As a Westchester community member and mother of two, she believes all children should have a safe, supportive, and caring environment to grow and learn at their own readiness level.

Ms. Spirelli continued, “I also recognize the importance of a strong home and school connection. Parents are every child’s first teacher and I believe that by working together, we can make sure the needs of our diverse student population are met.” Her plans are to continue Hastings’ tradition of providing a nurturing interactive and learner-centered environment where all students and staff share mutual respect and strive to be productive, responsible citizens of the community.

Jennifer Spirelli began her career in the New York City Department of Education as a middle and high school science teacher. She was awarded recognition as a Master Teacher, received a MƒA Master Teacher Fellowship Award, was nominated for the Fellows of Academy for Teachers, and was honored by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). In addition, Jennifer was a Syracuse University Project Advance (SUPA) Adjunct Professor for Forensic Science. Jennifer completed her Masters Degree of Secondary Education at SUNY Cortland and her Masters of Educational Leadership at Bank Street College. She has spent the past four years at Somers Central School District as the middle school assistant principal. In this role she partnered with families and the local community to make connections and build relationships with the school. In addition, Jennifer provided professional development and instructional coaching to staff members to support the academic and social-emotional needs of all students.

“We look forward to benefiting from Jennifer’s experiences supporting teachers and students during her previous school’s candidacy phase as an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program, serving on a team to revamp the Code of Conduct to include restorative practices, supporting the implementation of a social-emotional program called No Place for Hate, and assisting in compiling data for a program review of the special education program,” stated Dr. Valerie Henning-Piedmonte, Superintendent of Schools, Hastings-on-Hudson UFSD. “We are excited that she is joining us. Both her previous Superintendent and Principal praised her for her leadership, wonderful relationships with parents, teachers, children, and her colleagues and the ability to support teachers in all curricula areas.”

“Once again, I am thrilled and honored to join the Hastings-on-Hudson community and I truly am energized to guide our students through their educational journey,” said Ms. Spirelli.

Jennifer Spirelli lives with her husband Robert, a high school math teacher, two children Owen and Riley and their dog Mick in Ardsley, New York.
