Dear Hastings Families,

Today marks the 19th anniversary of the terror attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001. This horrific event that caused so much devastation brought us together as a nation. For some of us, the memories are still crystal clear, and will haunt us forever.

As a District, we will continue to commemorate this event even though most of our children were not students at the time. This event left a permanent mark on our society. During today’s Board of Education Work Session, scheduled for 1:00 p.m., we will observe a moment of silence in honor of those who perished, and the heroic first responders who risked their lives for others.

The tragic events of 9/11 made us stronger and united us. We should never forget the importance of valuing and upholding the dignity and humanity of all people.

August 7, 2020

Dear Hastings Community,

This afternoon, Governor Cuomo announced that schools may reopen as described in their school reopening plan submitted on July 31, 2020. While the Governor is not asking that districts change their models, he is asking us to make a decision on the following: reopen in the hybrid model outlined in the plan, reopen in the full virtual model where all children will learn from home, or reopen with all children learning on campus. The latter model, in our school buildings, is not feasible for us because we are not able to maintain social distancing of six feet in our schools at full student capacity. We will determine the best way to enlist community feedback on this decision of the hybrid model or full virtual model.

The Governor also directed districts to convene three public discussions, by August 21, for the purpose of communicating the school reopening plan to families, teachers and staff, and other members of the community and answer questions. In addition, one session must be provided separately for teachers and staff to review the reopening plan, answer questions, and state concerns. We have already held opportunities in July, and have scheduled opportunities in the coming weeks for the community and faculty and staff to ask questions and share concerns about our plan.

Our District conducted its first Community Forum on our school reopening plan on July 21, a Superintendent & PTSA/SEPTA Chat on the school reopening plan on July 28 and a Faculty and Staff Forum on instruction and learning on August 3. In addition, these are the other forums that have been scheduled:

● Faculty and Staff Forum on School Reopening #2, Monday, August 10, 3:00pm-4:30pm
● Community Forum on School Reopening #2, Tuesday, August 11, 4:30pm-6:30 pm
● Superintendent & PTSA/SEPTA Chat on School Reopening #2, Wednesday, August 12, 3:30pm-4:30pm
● Faculty and Staff Forum on School Reopening #3, Tuesday, August 18, 3:30pm-5:00pm
● Special Education School Reopening Forum, Thursday, August 20, 4:30pm-5:30pm
● Hillside Elementary School Reopening Forum, Friday, August 21, 10:00am-11:30am
● Hastings High School Reopening Forum, Friday, August 21, 12:00pm-1:30pm
● Farragut Middle School Reopening Forum, Friday, August 21, 2:00pm-3:30pm

We will use Zoom webinar, which has a capacity of 500 participants. Information about how to access these forums has already been shared and is listed on our website. This information will be shared again in the upcoming Hastings Happenings. We will also record each forum for those unable to attend and upload the recording to our website. In addition to the forums and chats, we will continue to update our School Reopening FAQ document on our website.

The Governor’s objective is clearly to ensure that districts provide an opportunity for families, teachers, and staff, and other members of the community to fully understand our school reopening plan and how remote learning will be provided. Starting in March, Melissa Szymanski, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, has continued to work with teachers and administrators on ways to develop engaging and consistent practices associated with remote learning.

The Governor also expects that districts post details on their websites about three specific components of the school reopening plan so that this information is more easily accessible:
● How we plan on conducting health screenings for students and teachers;
● How we will conduct contact tracing if someone tests positive; and,
● How we will conduct remote learning.
Feedback from the community and teachers and staff about our school reopening plan has expressed myriad opinions and concerns that we have attempted to address. In addition, survey results from families and faculty and staff about which hybrid model is preferred is here. We make every effort to clarify points through email, phone calls, and videoconferences. The forums provide another chance to reexamine and solidify components of our plan before September 8, the first day of school.
While we know that questions and suggestions are made in the spirit of care for children and District staff, we feel confident that from the outset, our intent was to involve as many stakeholders as possible to develop the safest possible plan that would allow us to reopen our schools.

If you have any questions or concerns that have not been addressed, please feel free to contact the administrator of your child’s school, Melissa Szymanski, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction; Maureen Caraballo, Business Official; Joseph Martorana, Director of Facilities, or me.

Warm regards,

Valerie Henning-Piedmonte

Message from the Superintendent of Schools

August 6, 2020

Dear Hastings Families,

We will be hosting our second Community Forum on the School Reopening Plan on Tuesday, August 11, 2020, 4:30pm-6:30pm. To ensure that we answer as many questions as possible, all questions will be submitted in advance of the meeting using this sheet. The last day to add your questions to the sheet will be Monday, August 10 at 12pm. Questions and responses will be added to our FAQ document on our website.

As you know, the Governor is expected to make an announcement this week about when schools will reopen. This new information will also be shared and discussed on August 11.

As a result of the Community Forum held on July 21, we expanded our capacity to include more participants in the forum by using Zoom webinar with a 500 participant limit. The webinar will also be recorded and uploaded to our website.

Thank you for submitting your questions in advance using this sheet. The link to the webinar is below.

Community Forum on Learning and Instructional Models
for Reopening Schools

Tuesday, July 21, 2020
4:30 pm - 6:00 pm

The Hastings School Reopening Planning Committee has been working since May to formulate a plan for the reopening of our schools in September. Subcommittees have been organized to address the following areas in the reopening plan: Instruction & Technology; Facilities, Physical Re-Entry Safety & Security; Transportation, Food Services and Business; Medical; Mental Health & Wellness; and Athletics & Co-Curricular activities. While each of these areas of planning is important, the one which has garnered the most concern is what learning and instructional models will be used when we reopen. The scenarios that we’ll share at the forum include: (1) when all children are on campus; (2) when all children are learning from home; and (3), when a portion of the student population is on campus while the other portion is learning at home. Given the proximity of Hastings to Dobbs Ferry, Ardsley and Irvington, the Rivertowns Superintendents and Assistant Superintendents are working together to adopt similar learning and instructional models. Shortly after the forum, we will distribute a comprehensive survey to obtain feedback on what we’ve shared.

Below is the link to the Community Forum on Tuesday, July 21st, at 4:30 p.m.

Hastings Virtual Graduation

Class of 2020 Graduation Program Tonight at 6 PM

After the rain, the sun appears. These words are telltale of the spring season that Hastings students endured along with the world as a new normalcy was created due to the coronavirus pandemic. Learning went online and traditional spring activities such as sports, plays, musicals, field trips, proms, and concerts were all upended.

However, creativity sprang to the forefront with drive-by celebrations, virtual award ceremonies, and faculty and student celebratory parades of cars. In the end, the 4th and 8th grade moving up ceremonies were virtual, and graduation was delightfully moved from a virtual ceremony to in-person, albeit with only the students in attendance and socially distanced.

"Our administrators and their planning committees demonstrated the importance of agility, flexibility, and collaboration as they navigated how to maintain end of year activities and celebrations during these unprecedented times. I would like to thank everyone who helped to make these important year-end traditions and celebrations successful and memorable. I encourage everyone to watch tonight's high school graduation program," expressed Dr. Valerie Henning-Piedmonte, Superintendent of Schools.

To view the graduation program of the Class of 2020, please click on this link beginning at 6 PM this evening.

According to HHS Principal Louis Adipietro, the Class of 2020 in-person, student-only, graduation ceremony that was held on upper Burke Field this past Friday was a success. "I was so delighted to have our entire class of graduates together today celebrating their accomplishment. From the beginning, it has been clear that this was the priority of our seniors. I would like to thank the many individuals who worked hard to make today special," said Principal Adipietro.

Students echoed similar sentiments. "It's exciting to have a ceremony to celebrate all the hard work we've done and to have our moment. There was concern in the beginning as to whether there would be a stage or not, but that doesn't matter. We just wanted to say thank you to the school and the people. I am very happy about having this ceremony," said graduating senior Samar Normand.

Kojo Sheng said, "Everyone is happy."

Again, to view the Class of 2020 Graduation Program, tune in tonight, Sunday, June 28 at 6 PM.
