Have you wished on a star?
“The Autumn Star”
“I hung a star on the apricot tree,
Look for it there to remember me.”
“But why did you leave? You were so quickly gone. My world feels heavy this cool early morn.”
“I know your heart aches, but it eases with time. What was the last thing we did when the weather was fine?”
“We picked the apricots.”
“That’s right.”
“So now, with some cinnamon and sugar in hand, go boil the jam, just as we planned.”
“But autumn is coming, and the boughs will be bare; the leaves will soon fall in the sharp winter air. Your star will fall with them, lost in the frost—I'm worried I’ll forget what I loved and lost.”
“My star will hold fast, and glint in grey skies, tied to the limb where our memories lie. It will twirl through the branches, above soft white snow—our love will not fade when the winter winds blow.”
“You can come back each year to our special place, and pick the sweet fruit from this tree where we played. Then bottle the jam just as before, to preserve our memories forevermore.”
A tribute to all the pets we've loved and lost. 🐾
