The extraordinary circumstances we are experiencing will be a piece of our history, the town, state, country, and the world…

In the past few weeks, we have seen many wonderful examples of our community reaching out to help each other, including children learning basic principles of humanity while practicing thoughtful social distancing.

If you have a story to tell, a picture to share, any inspirational event, please send it to me at [email protected].

Collectively we can preserve these inspirational moments of
this historic kindness for future generations in the files at our Historical Society.

A presentation from our friends at the Rye Historical Society.

Rye Historical Society and Rye Public Library have scheduled Alexandra de Steiguer to speak at the Rye Congregational Church on Thursday, September 26 at 6:30. For more than twenty years, Alex has been winter caretaker on the Isles of Shoals, spending most of five months alone, as winds and weather batter the rocky shores. In her multimedia presentation, “Senses of Place: Winter Life on a Small Island,” which includes readings, slides and music, Alex reflects on how using perceptive abilities - beyond the five physical senses that we all share - can help us better “place ourselves within the picture” of our own lives.

The Isles of Shoals, five of which belong to Maine and four to New Hampshire, lie nine miles off the coast and can be seen from the mainland on clear days. Alex will discuss the solitude and beauty of the nine deserted islands with their rocky, windswept and often harsh environment.

Before settling in her solar powered timber frame home in the woods of New Hampshire, Alex worked as a professional crew member aboard traditionally rigged sailing vessels (tall ships) for many years. These ships were engaged in research and sailing school programs and each voyage was at least six to nine months long. One, the “Ernestina” was built in 1894 and was a former Gloucester fishing schooner and artic research vessels and she remains a beautiful and sea-worthy ship to this day. During one of Alex’s memorable trips, the ship was caught in the hurricane of 1991, which has become popularly known as “the Perfect Storm.”

Alex has published a book of her photographs, "Small Island, Big Picture,” which is in its second printing. Her haunting black and white photography has been collected by the DeCordova Museum, the North Carolina Museum of Art, and the Ogunquit Museum of American Art and is represented in New England by the Pucker Gallery, 240 Newbury Street, Boston. This past winter while on Star Island she recorded a CD: “Winter Sublime: Songs from Across a Seven Mile Sea.”

She has been interviewed on National Public Radio, Boston Chronicle and NH Chronicle, profiled by Yankee Magazine, LensWork Magazine, Don't Take Pictures Magazine, The Square Magazine, The Boston Globe and others, and is the subject of and contributor to the award winning documentary film "Winter's Watch" (2017).

The talk is free and open to the public. Parking is on the left side of the church.

Important Town History Update: 2019 Warrant Article 12

Tercententary Celebration Capitol Reserve Fund

Dear fellow residents. This year in preparation for the 2022 Tricentennial celebration our committee in conjunction with the Historical Society embarked on updating the last 100 years of our town history. Initially we were somewhat shocked at a price given to us by an established company of $60k.

Determined to make this happen more affordably we were fortunate to find a talented budding author who gave us a price of $35,000. He came highly recommended and after a thorough review was unanimously approved by both of our committees as well as the Selectmen. The Historical Society generously provided $15,000 to begin the project.

We would now humbly like to ask the town to fund the next $15,000 in the form of three $5000 warrants spread over the next three years, the first of which is on the ballot this year.

There was a great deal of interest in updating the town history in our survey taken a few years ago, so please consider your vote on this year’s Tricentennial warrant of $5000 to fund this important project. Thank you.

Portsmouth loves to flaunt its 1623 birth date, but it rarely gives a cranberry for New Hampshire’s founding couple. The Thomsons arrived from Plymouth, England, barely three years after the Mayflower had delivered its band of religious Separatists - the so-called founding “pilgrims” - to Massachusetts.

Work has begun on the front portico of the museum! The painters spent Monday cleaning and scraping. They removed the old, damaged mouldings and used epoxy to stabilize them.
They are drying on a table inside now, and will be reattached to the building on Wednesday.
