Please note: In July and August, our Tuesday through Friday hours are extended to 5:00 pm! Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD was established in 1959 as NASA's first center devoted to the exploration of space. It is named after Dr. Robert Goddard, "The Father of American Rocketry." Home to the world's largest group of scientists and engineers, Goddard's mission is to expand our knowledge of Earth, the solar system, and the universe through observations from space and through scientific discovery.

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope

Today is National Space Day, and tomorrow is National Astronomy Day! 🚀 🔭 Discover how the James Webb Space Telescope will study our galaxy, or learn how to make a DIY Webb Flip-book.

Calling all animators!

We have a #DIY Flipbook to make your own #NASAWebb deployment animation. Piece the images together, flip them quickly, and watch #NASAWebb blossom! #NASAatHome #nationalspaceday

https://go.nasa.gov/2VRTeAw

For the James Webb Space Telescope to fit into a rocket, it must be folded up. After launch, Webb will deploy during its roughly 30-day, million-mile journey out to the second Lagrange point (L2). This 48-frame flipbook highlights how Webb deploys or unfolds like a transformer once in space. It can be made at home using paper and a binder clip. As you quickly flip through the frames, you can see an animation of how Webb will deploy in space!
