Oh My Goodness,
Oh May Goodness!
Did we ever start the month with a wide arrange of climate here in Northern Virginia. I've recently returned to soccer refereeing after a 20 year hiatus (boy how the laws and referee training have changed!) and on one day I was sweating through and the next I was bundling up in waterproof layers to deal with bitterly cold, wet conditions. And now it's in to mugginess. Ah! Life in the swamp!
In April we had to move the Wolfgang and Luke Young Artists Spring Contest Reception to April 28 and we enjoyed a lovely gathering of adult artists coming to enjoy some kids art as well as some good company. We brought in some goodies and activites for kids to enjoy including a facepainter to demonstrate some impressive body artistry.
We also enjoyed a private art class down in the Springfield area with a group of very lovely ladies who were celebrating an early Mother's Day afternoon in each other's good company.
This past weekend was busy, with an adult art class (life drawing) and on Saturday we rolled right into a kid's paper marbling art class. Both were small and intimate groups that yielded some relaxing creative down time for us all. We look forward to follow up classes with Collage for Kids and Parent this coming Saturday May 11, 3-5pm (1 spot remaining enroll here https://square.link/u/VTCcrsUu) , and a 2nd part to the drawing class on Friday June 14, 6pm start, where we will be drawing in skeletal structure and muscle structure on transparency sheets to show the layers of the human form. (3 spots remaining enroll here https://square.link/u/h6pxf92X )
If you're looking for a unique Mother's Day gift, we can offer original artwork (and we can help you get a deal on framing), custom pet/animal portraits, handmade modern pottery from Mexico, art supplies for those creative moms (modeling clay kits, water colours, acrylic sets, drawing sets), an art class or private art session, perhaps one of the books on display, or just a simple gift card to let Mom choose something out for herself. squareup.com/gift/MLTGSE0Y8N48C/order
This month's podcast episodes will feature Local Artist Clarisa Marcus,
Local Art Historian/Framing Consultant Lydia Davis, NYC-Based Historical Biographer Stefanie Van Steelandt, Canadian Landscape Artist and retired eductor Heather Smiley is back to talk about the role of Art in Education and we end the month with Local Artist/Childrens Book Author Penny Burk.

We are open by appointment - please call/text Sylvanna at 917-349-3301 or email [email protected] .
Have a great May everyone!

Kids are such jewels. We had a paper marbling class session today - part 2 will be to build a collage with the paper that was marbled and will take place next week. Once that portion of the session was complete, the kids opted for some playdough creation and a storybook was read aloud and I just love the delight that “Little Blue Truck - Springtime” brought to the children. What a lovely way to spend a rainy afternoon on “Happy Star Wars Day” as the littlest one put it. Here are the creations from two sisters…a cat on a cushion with some kibble, a farmer (inspired by Mr Fox), and a dog. Packed them up so they could take them home to show dad. Really lovely 🥰
Announcing a last minute class for this Friday May 3, 6pm-8:30pm with a social after class at the Brogue…life drawing with Dony MacManus. Shoot us a DM to find out how to sign up.
