Gallery on the Green presents the 50th Annual Open Juried Exhibition. The selections were made by Lisa Hayes Williams, Associate Curator, New Britain Museum of American Art. As this is an open exhibition, it features the work of artists from all over Connecticut and beyond. On display is fine art in a wide variety of styles, media and subject matter including painting, drawing, photography, ceramics and sculpture. The juror awards prizes totaling more than $1500. Prize funders include Union Savings Bank, Collinsville Savings Society, Charles & Doris Currier Memorial Fund, Mitchell Manchester Fund and Mitchell Auto Group, Maxwell Shepherd Memorial Arts Fund, Inc., Nancy Cloutier Memorial, Peg Douglas Memorial Fund, A & J Quality Roofing, Jerry’s Artarama West Hartford CT, Smith Edwards McCoy Architects, object|resonance, and others.

Also on display is a solo exhibit by Jennifer Knaus, consisting of finely detailed oil and gouache paintings on panel. There is a surrealistic touch to the portraits, landscapes and botanicals, giving them a striking and often haunting beauty. Knaus has exhibited in galleries in Connecticut, Maine, Rhode Island and New York, and her work has appeared in newspapers and magazines. Knaus received a BFA from San Francisco Art Institute and an MFA from the University of California, Davis. She teaches art classes at Central Connecticut State University.

An opening reception and awards presentation will be held on Saturday, October 14 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. The public is warmly invited to attend this free reception.

The Canton Artists’ Guild at the Gallery on the Green, the longest continuously-running artist guild in the state, has 3 separate galleries and hosts 9 month-long exhibitions each year. The gallery is located near the intersection of Dowd Avenue and Route 44 at 5 Canton Green Road in Canton. Hours are Friday – Sunday, 1-5 pm. The main floor gallery is handicapped accessible.

“I paint alone in my studio where I solve problems that did not exist until I began painting. A painting is a conflict with disorder. A painting is not a message to anyone. It may not tell a story, it may not even represent an idea. It means only that it signifies what I spend my time doing - it is the outcome of that process of making and remaking on the flat surface in search of a precarious balance.”
Richard Gorman - Irish Artist.

Curator Tracey Bashkoff introduces "Agnes Martin", the first comprehensive survey of the artist’s work since her death in 2004. On view October 7, the exhibition traces Martin’s career from her early experiments of the 1950s through her mature oeuvre and final paintings. Visitors will have an opportunity to explore the artist’s subtle and evocative striped paintings and her signature grid-pattern works, which were influenced by Taoism and Zen Buddhism.

I just received my copy of Brian Rutenberg's "Clear Seeing Place".
I have studied many contemporary/abstract painters with lots of different agendas. This painter is the real deal. Brian is talented, relateable and genuine and really funny. Can't wait to read it!

Susan Rothenberg describes the importance of keeping busy—even in the absence of concrete ideas—in this clip from ART21's "Memory" episode. (http://a21.tv/SusanRothenbergMemory)

Says the artist: "If you're not in your studio physically most every day, you’ve denied the possibility of anything happening."

It’s About the Paint, Not the Subject, for Veteran New York Artist Larry Poons

Take a guess who’s behind Outta-Here (2015), a boldly abstract, nearly seven-foot-wide acrylic painting, dense with frenetic brushstrokes in saturated pastel hues. It’s not a boundary-pushing street artist or an edgy emerging painter: it’s Larry Poons, a veteran New York artist who’s nearly eighty y…

Great idea!

Is there a particular song that's especially meaningful to you? If so, take a sheet of music from that tune and print it in a large size to create a powerful piece of personal artwork. Have it custom framed in a simple frame, such as this lovely water gilded cap frame, and hang it in a place of prominence. Not only will it be a conversation starter, but you'll also be reminded of a special song every time you see it!

It's a new year and I am looking for some new images to promote. What kind of artwork are you looking for in 2012?

11/08/2011

Well, I left the gallery around 3 pm today and still only lights in the front of my space. No power to the shop and no heat, I just don't get it. Very frustrating...There's only 7 of us in the plaza that have been able to open and operate at a minimum. I will keep regular hours tomorrow, 10 -5, so stop by and see the Art Show!
