“I saw you coming,” Mr. Leon Davis said with a smile as he reached for something special and placed this team photo in my hands.
This picture of the 1953 Graceville Oilers is one I had never seen before, despite months of searching the web and digging through archives. To finally hold it, even as a copy of a copy, was something unforgettable.
After giving me the photo, Mr. Davis laughed and told me there was no way he’d remember all of the players’ names. Ashley politely challenged him to give it a try since we had just spent over an hour talking about the Oilers. With the help of his Spinks Official Baseball Guide from 1954, he picked up a pen, studied the faces, and one by one, named every single player.
Back Row: Charles Watford, Chuck Quimby, Hubert Adair, Leon Davis, Whitfield, Jack Weeks, Wayne Berg, Robert Davidson, Claude Ezell, Robert Odenheimer.
Front Row: Nicolas Berbesia, Arthur Pacanowski, William “Bill” Pouncey, Frank Hartman, Holt “Cat” Milner, Joaquin Toyo, Donald Harter, Carey Philpot.
I’d love to find the original someday, but for now, this gift from Mr. Davis is priceless. Alongside it, I’m sharing both the AI-enhanced black & white version and a colorized version to help bring these players (and this moment in time) back to life.
⚾ This is why the work of The Oilers Archive matters: every discovery is a step closer to preserving Graceville’s place in baseball history.
