Rubel Castle

Rubel Castle Rubel Castle is Alive With History Rubel Pharms has bustled with the happy industry of artists, gardeners, architects and stackers of stone ever since.

In the foothills of Glendora, California stands the last intact citrus packing house from the early 20th century…and a castle. It exists to this day because in 1959, during the decline of the citrus era, Michael Rubel bargained for the defunct Albourne Rancho property and took up residence in the huge packing house. In the 1960s creosote and class collided when Michael’s mother, one-time Greenwich

Village Follies and Ziegfeld dancer Dorothy Deuel Rubel, moved into the packing house with him. At 200 feet long it was the perfect venue for her favorite hobby: parties. Well-dressed guests arrived weekly by the hundreds, strolling past old tractors, horses, poultry, buggies, and the gritty accoutrements of the bucolic rancho period, to arrive inside a tin fruit packing house transformed into a giant dance hall. Inside, surrounded by art and antique furniture remaining from Rubel ancestors, the guests mingled in the smudge oil and orange blossom atmosphere and danced to a small orchestra. Sally Rand, the silent screen actress and fan dancer, famous since the 1933 Chicago World's Fair, never missed Dorothy Rubel’s parties, which were so extravagant that the packing house became known as “The Tin Palace.” Other people of note who came to the Tin Palace in those days include Dwight Eisenhower, the Duncan Sisters, Beatrice Kay, Harry Townes, Bob Hope, Jack Benny, Kid Chissell, Angie Dickinson, and Alfred Hitchcock. Though Michael slept in one of the giant citrus refrigerators, the walls of thick cork were not sufficient sound insulation to allow him peace from his mother’s parties. In 1968 Michael fired up his cement mixer and, with a pile of discarded champagne bottles, began building himself a small get-away house in the center of his empty old 16-million gallon concrete reservoir. The high walls of the reservoir provided privacy and a noise barrier while he built his bottle house. Thus began a building spree that lasted twenty years, culminating in what is now called the Rubel Castle. With the encouragement of old timers like Odo Stade, and with the help of many friends and relations, the castle grew to be thousands of square feet with towers five stories high, made from locally gathered river rock, salvaged wood, metal, junk and, yes, more bottles. A restored 1896 Seth Thomas clock works runs the brass bells and clock that crown one of the high towers. Over the decades, Rubel Castle has instilled a work ethic in hundreds of young people and stands as a celebration of the independent spirit. Huell Howser interviewed Michael Rubel for “Videolog” in 1990, and the story is also celebrated in the book “One Man’s Dream; The Spirit of Rubel Castle.” The book has been partly translated into Chinese. In 2011 Huell Howser paid another visit and created a 30 minute tour with Scott Rubel. Like a true castle, it has hosted royalty including Prince Phillip, Henry Kissinger, the Archbishop of Canterbury-Robert Runcie, and Governor George Deukmejian. In March, 2005, Michael gave Rubel Castle to the Glendora Historical Society. Tours can be scheduled, and the property is available for use as a film location.

Day of Service: Ten Castle stewards got together for a day of parkway tree planting. Scott Rubel planted the young replacement for the sentry Live Oak, in the traditional spot. A black & white inset shows the old oak in 1963.
The old Live Oak was condemned in 2018 and later removed. Castle volunteers line up for a photograph against the west wall of Rubel Castle, standing behind the young oak with their shovels. Sandy Krause, Kathleen McPherson, Amy Wolkins (the organizer of this improvement project), Scott Rubel, Craig Woods, David Reiman, Ron Fleming, Oznic, Eric Butterworth. Sheharazad Fleming was on the crew, also. She’s behind the camera.
Fifteen trees were planted along the Live Oak and Palm Drive parkways with a variety of drought tolerant and native trees: Quercus berberidifolia, Scrub Oak; Ceanothus, Ray Hartman; Heteromeles arbutifolia, Toyon; Cercocarpus betuloides, Mountain Ironwood; Sambucus nigra subsp. cerulea Blue Elderberry

The Tin Palace west wall, outside Michael's bedroom. Sleeping rooms in the Packing House, known as the Tin Palace, were the original cold rooms (sort of refrigerators) from the Albourne Rancho era. The door to the left leads into Castle-Builder Michael Rubel's bedroom at Rubel Castle. Michael was fascinated by genealogy and painted the family crest hanging to the right of the door when he was 12 years old. The tapestry crest partially visible on the door is the crest of another branch of the family. This section of wall is typical of all the walls in the 120-foot-long room. V is for Very Tall Towers.

Looking up at the north clock face of the Rubel Castle Clock Tower. In perspective, the tower juts into the sky, accentuating the "V" framed by the surrounding Castle walls. All foreshortened, along with the view of the very tall palm tree.

This was shot by David Maziarz on a Sept. 4, 2022 tour. ( on Instagram).

Sighting! Another historic Rubel t-shirt sighting! This is the classic Rubel Farms shirt printed traditional silk screen with a silhouette of an antique truck and the date 1861 inside a filigree border.
The shirt is worn by Phil Crosby, who married Eleanor Riker, cousin to Castle-Builder Michael Rubel. This is ca. 1976.
In the early 70s, Elle lived in the Tree House at Rubel Castle.

Here's a piece of family history neither the Castle or Museum will ever own, because it appears on ebay for $470. We have many items from the whiskey-maker Henry M. Rubel (Castle-Builder Michael's grandfather), but Wanmore brand is rare, and this one with a paper label in such good condition we have never seen before. 1906.

"Like a owl in the blue
I sing to you. To who do you?" —Walt Kelly

The Rubel Castle weather vane hosts local fowl of all sizes, from a 2 oz. hummingbird [pic #2] to a 3 pound owl. Hoots disturbed the slumber of a Castle resident last night who snapped this photograph of a giant owl perched on our Don Quixote weather vane.

At left in first picture is an NFT rendering by Mark D. Viraj of what we imagine to be a Rubelian owl. All we need is a better camera.

Preservation is now top of the list for the plans for Rubel Castle. This is a milestone year for the Glendora Historical Society as studies for Castle preservation are under weigh.

Here, Bob Deering takes a break in the Rubel Castle Bar during a very long day of scanning August 2, 2022. Bob is a leader in the Ad Hoc Contract Committee for Preservation.

Scanning?! You heard that right: We are scanning the entire Castle and will one day have a 3D model! Watch for announcements. Within a week we hope to have our presentation "Why Preservation" posted on YouTube. This was an educational presentation by preservation architects Team Drisko and Page & Turnbull to the Glendora Historical Society at Bidwell Forum in July.

NO ANIMAL DUMPING
Last week a rabbit appeared inside our walls, dumped there by someone who knows the Castle is full of animal lovers. We loved this bunny enough to find a home, and then two more appeared. One was dehydrating in a box for who-knows-how-long and died yesterday. Our Castle Manager Joe Asa responded immediately by creating this sign and posting it on our north gate.
Everyone at the Castle loves all animals, which is why this treatment of rabbits is heartbreaking.
We tried having our own rabbit ranch in 1971 (picture of our sign included here). We built a rabbit-proof fence and a tunnel system we thought would make them happy, but we could not eat them fast enough to keep up with reproduction, and they could not be kept within the rabbit-proof pen. Another mediocre farming experiment.
Please take care of your own animals. They should be dinner if you cannot keep them happy and thriving.

For National Cartoon Day

Castle-builder Michael's father was not only a radio entertainer and songwriter, he was a prolific cartoonist, as well. These examples are from his 1923 University of Wisconsin album, where he was editor of The Octopus, a college magazine.

#1 Caption: C. Stahrs, former aerial observer, in a one-act tragedy entitled, “An Eye for an Eye.”

#2 Caption: She: Go over and tell John I can't dance with him, that I've a headache. He: I won’t let you use the males to defraud.

#3 Heinz Rubel's cartoon signature; a rat holding a sign.

Heinz later would own a 14 inch telescope in the backyard of his Glendora home, and by 1936 was an honorary astronomer with keys to Mount Wilson Observatories.

At Rubel Castle we were pleased to be a small part of the making of “Our Flag Means Death. Look at these scenes! Puffy shirts, hogs, grime. These scenes may be trying to portray the year 1717, but they look just like we did in the 1970s during the height of Castle building. Even the sign in picture #2 “Behave yourself” is a sign our cleaning lady Edith Friezner posted on the property in the 70s. HBO/MAX transformed our Castle into the Republic of Pirates and we premiered during episode 3.

04/27/2022

Our Saguaro was planted in 1970 and this is how tall it was in 2008. The saguaro cactus is the largest cactus in the United States, and will normally reach heights of 40 feet tall. The tallest saguaro cactus ever measured towered over 78 feet into the air. The saguaro cactus grows as a column at a very slow rate, with all growth occurring at the tip, or top of the cactus. It can take 10 years for a saguaro cactus to reach 1 inch in height. By 70 years of age, a saguaro cactus can reach 6 and a half feet tall, and will finally start to produce their first flowers. By 95-100 years in age, a saguaro cactus can reach a height of 15-16 feet, and could start to produce its first arm. By 200 years old, the saguaro cactus has reached its full height, reaching upwards of 45 feet tall.

What a wonderful Huell-Venture organized by Shawniece Swain of Where Would Huell Go? fame. The HuellAgains were honored to be a part of it and enjoyed meeting a the small group of Huell Fans who joined us Rubel Castle and The Donut Man. A perfect day! Thanks to the friendly and knowledgeable docents (Don and Hans) for a memorable day.
Tucked away in a residential neighborhood of Glendora, the Rubel Castle is an amazing one-of-a kind place to see and experience. It is impressive what someone can do with a little perseverance and imagination. If your child loves building forts, or if you love building forts and structure as kid, you are sure to appreciate this remarkable folk art castle. Using his ingenuity, Michael Rubel used all donated materials to build his dream castle with his community of 200+ volunteers over the span of 25 years. Rubel Castle, now managed by the Glendora Historical Society, offers daily tours for audiences ages 8+. Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to be awestruck by all that you will see and touch history with your hands!

VINTAGE PHOTOSHOOT TIPS....
Ladies, be on the lookout for interesting backdrops for your vintage pin-up photos. Once you find some nice locations near by...then pay attention to other details like a retro-style hairdo, vintage fashion, hair accessories, and don't forget the bright red lipstick. We loved this backdrop of stone and bricks and plants and statues...and great natural lighting at the Rubel Castle, captured by wonderful Shane Karns Photography .

HASO (Help A Songwriter Out!): CALL FOR EYE WITNESSES!

Dearest Rubelian Community,

I’m writing a song about the castle and the verses will consist of things you can find on campus—examples might include stuff like...

Boots in the graveyard
Severed motorcycle
Typewriter being used as a brick
A guitar birdhouse
An abandoned bee motel
An orange cannon
Ghost of Michael Rubel
Etc etc etc...

I have the chorus done and would love the song to be singable beyond the chorus (I was always sad about “her Majesty‘s a pretty nice girl...” by the Beatles). I think it would also be amazingly fun for the song to be kind of a “scavenger hunt” for the intrigued...

Let the listing commence! I may not use all of it but the inspiration is deeply appreciated! 😃 Cyndee Bessant, Scott Rubel, Bonnie Marie Asa, Eric Schwartz, Therese Barron, Noelle Fabian Dragon... feel free to tag others!

And as always, thank you to the Rubel family and GHS for keeping such a strange and wonderful treasure alive for so long. ❤️🙏❤️
The Glendora Historical Society hosted a wonderful holiday party for members at the Castle on Sunday. Good company, plentiful food, and an incomparable setting. An invitation to the party is worth the price of annual membership! Thanks to all who made the event possible.
