Md. state leaders pressed to remove controversial statue in Annapolis

Our Legacy Tours leading a tour from South Carolina. I - Janice Hayes-Williams am probably the only Tour Guide in Maryland who is against the removal of Roger Brooke Taney, but my picture graces the Washington Post today about it's removal.

You don't erase history we add to!

Dear God, has everyone gone mad!

LETTER TO THE EDITOR - THE CAPITAL NEWSPAPER 3/2/16

Bad Idea
Confused and disappointed that any Legislator in the State of Maryland would want to remove Chief Justice, Roger Taney from the State House Grounds. We cannot erase, nor sanitize history. To destroy and hide is a denial of that which makes us great. On these grounds we just added the resignation papers, a statue, and a brand new exhibit to tell the story of our beloved George Washington, Commander and Chief of the Continental Army and one of Americas largest slave owners who refused to manumit his chattel property until after his death, unlike Chief Taney.

The Chief, while not a handsome fellow, provides a place to remind us of Maryland history, good bad or indifferent: Dred Scott, The Negro Preacher that Taney defend as young attorney for being accused of inciting slaves to run away at a Camp Meeting, the manumissions he wrote, his brother-in-law who wrote the Star Spangled Banner and manumitted his slaves as well, the Murder Under the Tree.
I love how the Chief’s head is gently bowed in shame as he faces the Chesapeake Bay at our own harbor where thousands of captured Africans and Indentured Servants arrived in British and English Ships to be sold or indentured, as advertised in the Maryland Gazette.

Annapolis is the State Capital, and the greatest history of the Great State resides here. On these hallowed grounds don’t take away, let us teach the citizens our greatness.

Why not add to: Frederick Douglass, Edward Lloyd, Harriet Tubman?

To remove our history and legacy will set a dangerous precedent that will be catastrophic to the future of heritage telling in the State of Maryland.

Vote NO to remove the Chief!

I grew up in Annapolis and during my walks to the Stanton Colored School, white children threw rocks at me and my friend Horace Bishop. I learned the trade of Barbering and moved North with my Fathers family. My Great-grandfather (Smith Price) founded the First Church for People of Color in Annapolis in 1803 named Asbury AME Church. My Grandfather Henry Price owned a confectionary on Church Street (Main Street) and also sold Brandy. He served as Pastor of Asbury for over 50 years
I became a Doctor, a Heart Surgeon and am the first person in the world to open a heart an repair it. I am also the first person of color to serve as President of the Howard University Medical School.
