Garden Grove Historical Society

Garden Grove Historical Society Stanley Ranch Museum In 1970, Agnes Stanley donated two acres to the Garden Grove Historical Society.

This house, Arthur's barn, tank house and her son Emerson's home were also donated to the Garden Grove Historical Society. The two acre property is now known as the Stanley Ranch Museum and some of Garden Grove's oldest homes and business buildings have been moved to this location. Maintenance is done by members through contributions of time, financial donations and income from fundraisers. The St

anley Ranch Museum is owned by the Garden Grove Historical Society which is a private nonprofit organization and receives no government funding. The Ware-Stanley House, completed in 1893, is the focus home at the museum. Also included at the site are homes dating from the late 1800's to the early 1900's. Garden Grove's first post office, opened in 1877; the Electric Shoe Shop/Barber Shop; and Garden Grove's #1 fire engine, a 1926 American La France, are part of the exhibits. One of the most popular attractions is the Walt Disney Studio Garage which was relocated to the former ranch site in the 1980's.

It is THAT time of year again! The Barn and Book sale is coming! Terry and the rest of us have been working very hard getting the items ready for the sale.

We still need small items like watches, jewelry, earrings and gift items. We do not need clothing or shoes or purses.

So, garage sale junkies, resellers and thrifters get ready for three days of great items. We will have a wide range of items for sale and are always bringing out new things when space opens up.

This is our major fund raiser. Come out and but things for gifts, for your home and for yourself.

Here is a short biography of Alonzo G. Cook, the "founder" of Garden Grove. This is from the Tacoma Daily Ledger of Oct. 19, 1924. There are a couple of inaccuracies. Cook was born in 1839 and he became an M.D. in 1881 after he left Garden Grove.

This was a notice published in the Anaheim Gazette on 4-25-1918. The Ware's did very well for themselves.

Remember, we are having a public tour this Sunday October 2, at 1:30 p.m. Come see their house.

09/27/2022

Our next public tour is this Sunday, October 2, at 1:30 p.m. Come out and see the house, the fire truck and the barber shop (and all the other buildings.)
We are making preparations for out Barn and Book Sale, Oct. 27 - 29 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day.
This is our major fund raiser and is essential to our continued existence. We have just been hit with about a 50% increase in our insurance costs on top of all the other costs of staying in business. As a 501C(3) non profit, we are exempted from certain taxes (income and property) but we pay the same rates as everyone else for utilities, sales tax reimbursement and business fees. We accept donations of money and items for resale and donations of your time as a volunteer.
If you have a desire to volunteer some of your time, talent or treasure, please stop by the office on Tuesday or Friday between 9 a.m. and noon and talk to us. We can show you our campus and tell you about our mission. Our phone number is 714-530-8871. Since we are not always there since we are all volunteers, if you want to contact us, email us at [email protected]

We are having a public tour this Sunday, September 4, at 1:30 p.m. Take a break from the Orange Street Fair and visit us. We have a trophy from the first Orange Street Fair in 1910 in the Stanley House.

Because it will be quite warm, we will tour all of the air conditioned buildings (plus the fire house and the Disney Garage).

This will be the only public tour to be offered for September. We will be attending a special event on September 18 so there we be no tours scheduled then.

08/20/2022

We are having a public tour tomorrow, August 21, at 1:30 p.m. Come see the house of a "noted horticulturalist" (AAA's words) and try to guess when the barber shop was built. We have Garden Grove's first fire truck, one of Garden Grove High School's first classroom buildings and the childhood home of Garden Grove's first major league baseball player.

Here is an article from 1959 about Dr. Leroy Doig. He wrote the first history of Garden Grove. He got a lot of facts wrong (example: the Stanley house was built in 1893) because he was relying on a lot of old faded memories. However, if he had not written the history, it would be very difficult to reconstruct the early history of Garden Grove.

I found this chicken feed sack hidden in one of our buildings. Simpson Milling Co. was located at 208 S. Euclid St. That is where the Costco is now. Simpson was in business until about 1947. The building eventually became the Poultryman's Cooperative Association building. Safeway also sold the feed for $1.69 for a 100 pound sack.

Someone donated these two antique sewing machines. One is A Windsor Improved High Arm from about 1913 and the other is from J.W. Bartlett Co. about the same time. I spun the wheel and both needles moved but otherwise I so not know of these are operational. If you are interested please contact us at [email protected] They are priced at $25 each OBO. I prefer they go as a package. These are bodies only. There are no cabinets.

Thank you to everyone who came to our Barn and Book Sale. it was very successful. We will start preparing for the next one shortly.
The sale of art was very successful, so now we can accept donations of art, posters, wall hangings and the like since we have someone who will be able to take care of them.
We are a 100% volunteer run organization. We need volunteers for all aspects of the organization: sorting and pricing donations. giving tours, become board members, gardening and general activities. Also, volunteers get first crack at the donated items for sale.
Again, thank you to everyone who came to out Barn and Book Sale.

Today is the final day of our April barn and Book sale! We have brought out as much of our back stock that we can carry. There are still lots of great items available for gifts, resale or your own use. We have glassware and appliances, luggage and bins, gifts and art.

Speaking of art: Sandy has worked very hard in getting the art ready and displaying them under the walnut tree. She says she is willing to entertain offers. She does not want to put these away, so come on out and pick up a new picture to hang on your wall at home
Thank you to all you who have already come. We have a lot of new items available that were not displayed Thursday or Friday.

We take credit cards for your convenience.

This is the final day of our sale. 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

04/30/2022

Day 2 of our Barn and Book Sale is over. Business was very steady most of the day. Thank you to everyone who came by.

Tomorrow is the last day of the sale. We will be pulling out as much as we can from storage to have available to sell to you. Please come by. Every penny spent here stays here, going to the care and feeding of the Stanley Ranch Museum.

Day 2 of our Barn and Book Sale will start in two hours. We have restocked Emerson Hall and brought out new items everywhere.
We still have lots of art out under the walnut tree. please go see Sandy and get acquainted with the art she has and take home a new piece of art for your walls. We have two Ansel Adams prints and numerous smaller pieces. We also still have the large "Last Supper" marquetry piece.

If you need a small electric appliance, like a toaster or grille, we have some in the barn. If you need new glassware, we have sets in the barn and Emerson Hall. If you came yesterday, I would say about 1/3 of the items on Emerson Hall would be new to you.

We start at 8 a.m.

We accept credit cards.

04/29/2022

The first day of our Barn and Book Sale has concluded. There were a lot of people here and sales were brisk. Thank you to all those who came.

However, we are nowhere near running out of items to sell. We will be restocked tomorrow for your shopping pleasure. We still have some bins and there is still a lot of art work out under the walnut tree. Sandy asks that you help her out and buy the art. She does not want to put it away!😀

So, come shop tomorrow. If you came today, there will be a lot of items that you have not seen. If it will be your first time, we still will have more items than most sales of our type.

We start at 8 a.m. tomorrow. See you there!

Today is the day! Our Barn and Book Sale starts at 8 a.m. today. We have been working hard getting everything ready for you.

We have items for every occasion and use. Books, giftware, jewelry, household items are among the things that we have for sale.

Over the past year we have received a variety of storage bins. We have cleaned them up and most are for sale for $2.50 to $4.00, depending on size and condition. Single bin bottoms are $1.00. Because we don't have a hold table this sale (we could not find a volunteer to run it), you can use these bottoms to carry your items around.

We have received a lot of amberware items. We have put some out and have more available.

There will be art and wall items for sale under the walnut tree. I have seen at least 2 Ansel Adams pieces and several other well known pieces.

We will be putting out items all day as things are sold. If you see something you like, buy it because do not have any more of them.

We take credit cards for your convenience.

We look forward to seeing you.

One more day until our Barn and Book Sale!
Everything will be ready for you.

We have received a large number of amberware pieces. We have put some out and have more stored. We have plenty of books.

These are the ground rules:
Restrooms will be closed
No trying on of clothes
There will be NO hold table-we could not find a volunteer to handle it.
Please maintain social distance.
If it gets too crowded in Emerson Hall, we reserve the right to limit numbers inside.

We have worked very hard to get this sale ready for you. It is a major fund raiser for us. Please come back all three days. We are always putting out new things. If you see something you like, buy it.
Since everything has been donated, most of the time, what you see is what we have.

We take credit cards (MC, Visa and Discover) for your convenience.

4 days until the Barn and Book Sale. I have posted a few photos of Emerson Hall and the barn. We are still setting up but we will be ready for you on Thursday, April 28 at 8 a.m.
If you had volunteered to help assist us here, sorting, pricing, gardening or anything else that needs doing, you would have first shot at everything. As it is, we have much more than what is pictured. As the sale progresses, we put out new items, so there is always something new to see. At the last Barn sale, I think that when we opened on Saturday, 2/3 of the items in Emerson Hall were not out on Thursday, so come back all three days.
We will also have wall art, posts, prints paintings outside under the walnut tree and clothing, more books and household items, vases, purses, shoes and hanging linens out in the parking lot.
We take credit cards (MC, Visa and Discover) so you don't have to carry wads of money to the sale!
Remember April 28 - 30. Come to our Barn and Book Sale.

It is a week away.
These are the ground rules this year:
The restrooms will be closed.
No trying on of clothes.
There will be NO hold table. We do not have the volunteers available to man it. If you volunteer to man it, we will have one.
Social distancing will be encouraged but masks will not be required.
If it gets too crowded in Emerson Hall, we reserve the right to restrict numbers inside.

Now for the good stuff:
We will have a lot of items available for sale. Books, jewelry and gift items will be inside Emerson Hall.
We will have a lot of art items under the walnut tree and on the picnic tables. Sandy has been working very hard getting these ready. please come out and browse through what we have and take some home. Prices start at $5.
We have accumulated a lot of bins. Bins with top will be between $2.50 and $5 depending on size and condition. Individual bin bottoms that have no tops will be $1.
Household goods will be inside the barn and outside. Also outside will be clothing, shoes, purses, miscellaneous vases and whatever else we can put out.
Inside the barn will be more household items along with linens, yarn, electrical appliances and assorted gee-gaws.
Please do not bring any donations until the end of May. We do not have a place for them. We need a bit of time after the sale to put things away and tidy up the premises for the next sale.
We are looking forward to the sale. Please come out and buy everything we have! We will be putting out new things continually, so come back each day.
Remember, the Barn and Book Sale starts April 28 at 8:00 a.m.

These are some of the art works that we will have on sale at our Barn and Book sale, April 28 - 30. Prices start at $5.00. If you would like a sneak peek, come around on Tuesday or Friday between 9 a.m. and noon. Ask for Sandy or Karl.
Does anyone collect Annalee dolls? I just found some in our storage building. They date from 1998 - 2000. They were part of a large donation from a defunct gift store. I will put them out for sale if there is a demand for them.
