The Pan Am Building lobby has been undergoing renovation, and in this case, restoration and replication: the Josef Albers "Manhattan" mural which welcomed visitors when the building opened in 1963, and until it was removed in 2000. Damaged in the removal process, the "new" lobby welcomed back a Josef and Anni Albers Foundation approved mural. A sight to see.

Josef Albers’s iconic mural “Manhattan” once again welcomes visitors to 200 Park Avenue, The MetLife Building. The original artwork was installed in 1963, removed twenty years ago, and meticulously recreated during our recent renovation of the lobby. #art #tishmanspeyer

Rescuing 500 Airman Behind Enemy Lines: The daring Operation Halyard

George Vujnovich joined Pan American World Airways after escaping war torn Yugoslavia in 1941. With the United States joining the war effort later that year, many of our employees were commissioned to serve the armed forces.

In October 2010, George Vujnovich, was formally recognized for organizing one of the greatest rescue efforts of World War II. The US Army awarded him a bronze star in a ceremony at the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Sava in Manhattan.

Mr George Vujnovich passed in 2012. His story, these stories, this history, should be told, and remembered.

Pan American World Airways first met Fan Mei when she was last to board Boeing 707 “Clipper Resolute” — she was born onboard, mid-flight, crossing the Pacific Ocean, March 16, 1963.

While we do not know where Ms Fan Mei is today, we hope she is safe, and we wish her a Happy Birthday indeed.

But Mrs Shek Ong Yeun has carried aboard more than just her carry on, she is pregnant, and realizes not for much longer.

She quietly presses the stewardess call button.

History shows very few babies have been born mid-flight. “Clipper Resolute” is now 35,000 feet above the unforgiving Pacific Ocean. They are both past the point of no return.

Purser Philip Jones and stewardesses Astrid Lee and Claudia Laudon, along with passengers Dr Djan Raj Mahajan and Dr Ake Kjessler jump into action.

A baby girl cries. Five pounds fourteen ounces, she is last to board today’s flight. Her parents name her “Fan Mei” which in their first language translates to “Pan Am”. We are truly honored.

March is Women's History Month: Pan Am Museum honors all employees, all year long, but we wanted this to stand as a remembrance of our Flight Attendant Neerja Bhanot, the youngest recipient of India's highest peacetime recognition: the Ashok Chakra Award.

Awarded posthumously, as Neerja Bhanot lost her life when Pan Am Flight 73 was hijacked two days before her 23rd birthday, September 5, 1986.

In the early days, the allure and magic of reaching unknown lands attracted a unique and special breed of entrepreneur. Juan Trippe, founder of Pan Am, was that sort of entrepreneur. His vision of international air travel inspired the creation of a brave a new world in the skies. With Charles Lindbergh, his aviation partner and route surveyor, Juan Trippe embarked on one of the "greatest human adventures” – charting the skies and making the world a destination for all.

Capt. Samuel Maurice Isbell, 86, of Georgetown, KY, left this earth on his last trip on March 18, 2021. Sam died peacefully at home from a short illness. Born June 14, 1934 in Prestonsburg, KY, he was the son of the late Samuel L. Isbell and Ruth Francis Isbell. Sam served in the US Navy for 4 years as an aviator, graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1961 and flew with Pan American Airways for 27 years, retiring as a captain in 1991, after “taking strangers to far-away places”. During retirement, Sam enjoyed life as a gentleman cattle farmer in Scott County, KY. He was preceded in death by his late wife, Phyllis Gail Webb Isbell, a son, Capt. Samuel Maurice Isbell II USAF, a daughter, Nancy Ann Isbell, and brothers, Hubbard “Huck” Francis and Charles Joseph Isbell. He is survived by a son, Mark Frederick Isbell of Lexington, KY, a sister, Barbara Isbell Moore, of Georgetown, KY, nieces Carol Susan (Bill) Martin and Helen Ann (Gary) Vickers, nephews Rob Moore and Joe Moore, and many loving extended family and friends. Funeral services will be held in the near future at the Oxford Christian Church at a date to be determined, followed by a private family burial in the Highland Memorial Park, Staffordsville, KY. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Bluegrass Care Navigators (www.bgcarenav.org) of Lexington, KY and the Pan Am Museum Foundation (www.thepanammuseum.org) of Garden City, NY.
Four months into his career as a Pan American Airways pilot, and shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor my Dad, John C. Simpson was chosen for one of Pan Am’s first war-related secret missions. These missions supplemented the air transport activities of both the US Navy and US Army Corps and helped ferry war materials and personnel. Flown out of New York and taking advantage of the Takoradi Route in its flight plan, the B-314 Pan Am Clipper flew a total of 27,214 nautical miles to complete the mission. The 16 man crew commanded by Captain R.O.D. Sullivan ferried war supplies to the hard-pressed American Volunteer Group fighting the Japanese invasion of China. After loading the war materials, the Clipper proceeded via San Juan, Trinidad, Belem, Natal, Fish Lake, Lagos, Leopoldville, Port Bell, Khartoum, Aden Karachi, and Calcutta. My Dad flew as 4th Officer (pilot), also standing in at the navigation station and navigating some of the legs across Africa. The B-314 was not pressurized and was not allowed to fly above 10,000 feet except 12,000 ft for a ½ hour if necessary. On the leg from Leopoldville to Lake Victoria, Dad was shocked to find Captain Sullivan flying well under 10,000 ft, and it was at night. Dad said, “how about the terrain?” Captain Sullivan replied that the chart showed 3000; Dad replied, “that chart elevation is in meters!” Captain Sullivan immediately climbed. This event occurred in the mountainous area west of Lake Victoria, so Dad probably saved the flight and all those aboard. Two years later, Pan American Airway's Atlantic Clipper piloted by Atlantic Chief pilot Captain R.O.D. Sullivan crashed at Lisbon, killing 24 people. It was determined by the CAB that Sullivan was responsible for the crash though many at the time thought that Sullivan had been railroaded. Our family knew nothing of Dad’s mission until shortly after his death in 1993 when his dear friend Captain Joseph Flynn sent our Mother some of the details of “Skinny’s” (Pan Am’s nickname for Dad) great early career adventure. Captain Flynn was recruited by Pan Am out of Harvard Business School at the same time as Dad and their careers ran parallel courses including being stationed together (and roommates) in Rio de Janeiro in the mid-1940s. In his letter to my Mother, Captain Flynn also stated that “of course we all were envious of Skinny’s luck in being on a Special Mission (probably the first)”. It was so like Dad to keep the mission “Secret” for the rest of his life. Included in this posting is the original mission itinerary titled “PAN AMERICAN AIRWAYS ---CHARTER TRIP NUMBER EIGHT” along with scans of my Dad’s flight log entries for the trip.

Does there exist an aviators seniority list from the beginning? My great grandad told me he was seniority #15 on the original Clippers, he retired in 1968, the year I started as a third generation brat with Pan Am, dad was second generation. He was Armin "Pappy" Elsaessee and welcomed me to the. Company by presenting me the cut out and signed tail numbers off The China Clipper"
