What if supporting Red Dog Children’s Museum didn’t require writing a check? As a new member of the Garden City Co-op, farmers can now donate bushels of grain directly through GCC to Red Dog Children's Museum—helping create hands-on learning opportunities for local children while potentially gaining tax advantages.

🐾 Happy National Dog Day from Konza, our favorite four-legged friend and unofficial mascot!

Konza is a golden Lab service dog from KSDS Assistance Dogs, Inc and the devoted service-dog partner of our board chair, Lindsay Butterfield. Konza even helps her favorite hooman in Lindsay’s work as a physical therapist at the hospital! But here’s a fun fact: the “dog” in Red Dog Children’s Museum isn’t actually a dog at all.

Baby bison calves are sometimes called “red dogs” because of the reddish-orange color of their coats during their first few months of life. We chose the name because bison are an icon of western Kansas—and because Garden City’s older students are the Buffaloes. That makes the youngest children in our community our own little buffaloes…our “red dogs.”

Today, though, we’re happy to let Konza represent the canine side of the family!

National Dog Day is also a great time to teach children about assistance dogs. When an assistance dog is working, it has an important job helping its person. Always ask the handler before petting, calling to or offering food to the dog—and don’t be disappointed if the answer is no. The kindest way to show respect is to give the team space and let the dog stay focused.

Today, we join millions of people around the world in remembering Dolly Parton—a gifted artist, joyful storyteller and extraordinary champion for children.

Through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, she gave children far more than books. She gave them stories to share with their families, new worlds to explore and the freedom to dream beyond what they could already see. By placing books directly into children’s hands, Dolly helped nurture early literacy while reminding every child that their imagination matters.

As Red Dog Children’s Museum grows into its permanent home, we plan to include the Imagination Library as part of the museum experience. Its purpose fits beautifully with our own mission: creating a welcoming place where children and families can play, grow and learn—and where every child can feel seen, valued and accepted just the way they are.

Dolly once said:

“If I’m remembered 100 years from now, I hope it will be not for looks but for books.”

We believe she will be remembered for both the books she gave and the countless dreams those books inspired.

Thank you, Dolly, for your warmth, generosity and unwavering belief in children. We will always love you—and we will do our part to help your legacy live on for generations to come. 🦬❤️
