October 16 is World Food Day!

Food connects us—to the people who grow it, the traditions we share, and the neighbors gathered around our tables.

Here in southwest Kansas, we see the work that goes into producing food. World Food Day also reminds us that every family deserves access to nourishing meals.

For children, food can be a starting point for discovery. Where did this apple grow? How does wheat become bread? Why does your family make a certain dish for special occasions?

Try it together: Pick one ingredient from tonight’s meal and trace its journey to your plate. Talk about the people who helped it get there—from farmers and truck drivers to grocery workers and cooks.

At Red Dog Children’s Museum, we believe learning about our world includes learning how to care for one another. If you’re able, consider supporting a local food pantry and helping a neighbor put a meal on the table.

🧼👐 October 15 is Global Handwashing Day!

Between digging in the dirt, creating something messy, and sitting down for a snack, there’s an important little habit to practice: washing our hands.

At Red Dog Children’s Museum, we believe discovery and caring for one another go hand in hand. Learning to wash with soap and water helps children take care of themselves and the people around them.

Make it playful: Sing a song for 20 seconds while scrubbing palms, the backs of hands, between fingers, and around fingernails. Then rinse and dry!

It’s a small routine children can learn together—and carry with them every day. ❤️

🌾 October 12 is National Farmers Day!

Here in Southwest Kansas, agriculture is part of our everyday lives—from the fields outside our towns to the food on our tables.

Today, we thank the farmers and farm families whose hard work, care, and perseverance help feed our communities and the world.

At Red Dog Children’s Museum, we see agriculture as a wonderful starting point for discovery. How does a seed grow? What do animals need to thrive? How does grain get from a field to our food?

These questions connect children to the people, science, and work behind things they encounter every day.

Celebrate with your child: Thank a farmer, talk about where a favorite food comes from, or look for signs of harvest on your next drive.

To our farming neighbors: Thank you for all you grow and all you give.

Today, on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we celebrate the histories, cultures, and living traditions of Indigenous communities. ❤️

Many of us grew up learning that Christopher Columbus “discovered” America. But these lands were already home to diverse nations with their own languages, knowledge, and ways of life. His arrival also brought violence and exploitation to Indigenous peoples.

Recognizing Indigenous Peoples’ Day gives us an opportunity to tell a fuller story—one that honors the people who were here first and recognizes their continued presence and contributions today.

At Red Dog Children’s Museum, we believe a safe, welcoming place for discovery includes room to ask questions, hear different perspectives, and learn about one another with respect.

This day is an invitation to get curious together: Read a book by an Indigenous author, explore the history of Native nations in our region, or learn about Indigenous communities today.

Every child deserves to see their heritage treated with dignity—and every child benefits from understanding the stories of their neighbors. 🌎

Every girl deserves space to be curious, ask big questions, and imagine who she might become.

At Red Dog Children’s Museum, we believe every child deserves a safe, welcoming place for discovery—where they can try something new, make mistakes, express themselves, and know they belong.

Whether she’s building a tower, exploring science, making music, or creating something entirely her own, each experience is an opportunity to discover her interests and grow in confidence.

When we listen to girls and encourage their ideas, we remind them: Your voice matters. Your curiosity matters. There is room for you and your dreams. 🦬❤️

Every feeling deserves a listening ear.

On World Mental Health Day, Red Dog Children’s Museum is sharing a simple reminder: children don’t have to be happy all the time to be loved, welcomed, and understood.

Sometimes they need someone to listen. Sometimes they need a quiet moment, a chance to play, or help finding words for a big feeling.

We can start with: “I’m here. Would you like to tell me about it?”

When we make room for children’s feelings, we help them learn that asking for support is okay—and that they don’t have to face hard moments alone.

Today, Red Dog Children’s Museum celebrates the teachers who welcome questions, encourage another try, and help children discover their own strengths. From the classroom to the world beyond it, you make room for curiosity, creativity, and growth.

🍀 Happy National 4-H Week! October 4–10 🍀

A seed planted. A photograph taken. An animal cared for. A project that didn’t quite work—until a child tried again.

Learning by doing gives children opportunities to discover what interests them, build confidence, and see what they’re capable of. That’s something we love at Red Dog Children’s Museum!

This week, we celebrate the 4-H members, families, volunteers, and leaders across Southwest Kansas who help young people grow through curiosity, responsibility, and service.
