Gallitzin Tunnels Park & Museum

Museum & Community Building The community heritage museum is located directly across the park area in the newly renovated community building which houses, in addition to the museum, borough offices, police station, modern library and archival room, with an up-to-date information retrieval system. The museum area features a display of pictures depicting the community's industrial, social, and religious heritage. Many historical artifacts, donated by townspeople and railroad enthusiasts are prominently displayed in special kiosks. It houses a small souvenir shop supervised by a docent. Immediately adjacent to the museum is a 24 seat theater which has a schedule of video tapes, programs dealing with railroads, heritage and other current topics. All buildings and parking are ADA compliant with the exception of a narrow corridor within the caboose. The building also features restrooms that are available during open hours of the museum, library or borough offices. Tunnels Park Our recently renovated park, adjacent to the Gallitzin Tunnels, exhibits a restored 1942 Pennsylvania Railroad N5C Caboose. Visitors can use the ramp and platform to climb aboard this unit. The caboose has been restored to its original 1942 condition where visitors can see the sleeping quarters, eating area, old fashioned pot bellied cooking and heating stove, cupola, air-brake system, lighting facilities, bathroom facilities, signal lights and an observation post looking down on the newly installed PRR Walkway. Children can romp in the play area which features a wooden train. An operating vintage PRR position-light signal "guards" the entrance to the park. Excellent area for picture taking. Handicapped accessible. Open from Sunrise to Sunset, 7 days per week Tour Groups Welcome - please call ahead!

Guest in Galitzin. The Union Pacific Railroad 1943 and its train departed after its excursion from Norfolk Southern Corp Croxton Yard in the early morning hours of Monday, June 4, 2018. It provided an unusual splash of color with its Veterans tribute livery as it emerged from the tunnel in Galitzin, PA, headed towards Chicago and its home road. Thanks for visiting!

Last night members had our monthly training at The Gallitzin Tunnels park and reenacted a patient over an embankment. Members worked on basic knots, finding an alternative anchor point, setting up a 3 to 1 pulley system and patient packaging.

We never get tired of the NS business train!

5/2016, We posted a photo earlier today of the OCS rounding the Horseshoe Curve. We usually don't do a whole lot of video; however, the OCS is as much an auditory experience, as well as visual. So here is a video of the OCS rounding the curve in the rain this afternoon.

Too hot to railfan? Not in Gallitzin, as we have shade trees and an air conditioned facility. The Gallitzin Borough hall is open whenever the museum, library or borough offices are. In addition to A/C, we've got modern restrooms and easy chairs to relax in.

Tomorrow will be the first of three public excursion trips pulled by the NKP 765. Departing from Lewistown around 8AM the train will make its way west through Altoona and over Horseshoe Curve where it will turn on the loop track at Gallitzin and return east to Lewistown. NKP 765 will be assisted by NS 8098 (Conrail Heritage Unit) and NS 8102 (Pennsylvania Railroad Heritage Unit). Good luck to those who will be chasing and railfanning this train tomorrow, as well as those who have purchased tickets to ride it this weekend!!!

The Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society plans to run steam excursions from Lewistown through Altoona, over the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and back again on May 25, 26, & 27, with a two-plus hour layover at the Railroaders Memorial Museum on each return trip.
While tickets are reportedly sold out for all trips, it will be possible to safely observe the train from the Gallitzin Tunnels Park.
At the Tunnels Park, we will have a new tee shirt for sale, featuring the #765 as it approaches the Allegheny Tunnel. In addition, food and refreshments will be available. Join us to watch a historic, rare steam locomotive trip through Gallitzin!
