The Acadian Archives at the University of Maine at Fort Kent documents, preserves, celebrates, and disseminates information about the culture, way of life, and history of the Franco-American and Acadian people of the Upper St John river Valley. It is a repository for all documentation relevant to regional folklore, folklife, and history. It serves the University community as well as individuals an

d organizations regionally, statewide, nationally, and internationally. While traveling to Nova Scotia, last week, the Archives' director stopped at two easily accessible historic sites (that also happen to be easy to miss). Namely, these are the Fort Beauséjour–Fort Cumberland National Historic Site, on one hand, and the Beaubassin and Fort Lawrence National Historic Sites on the other.

These two sites practically stare at one another across the New Brunswick/Nova Scotia provincial boundary. In fact, they are located two miles from one another as the crow flies. They reflect the battle lines drawn between the French and the British in the 1750s. Acadians were again caught in the middle.

In 1750, at a time of rising tensions, French officers and the Indigenous allies burned the village of Beaubassin to force its Acadians residents, who were jealously guarding their neutrality, out of this disputed region. This act of sabotage enabled British soldiers to build Fort Lawrence the same year. The French countered by building Fort Beauséjour on the neighboring ridge in 1751. Their uneasy coexistence lasted four years. The pretense of peace disappeared in 1755. British forces overtook Beauséjour and began the cruel deportation of the Acadians from the region. Approximately one thousand Acadians were deported from this borderland. Twice that number were forced to flee.

The New Brunswick/Nova Scotia boundary reflects (roughly) the line of separation between the French and British empires on the eve of the Seven Years' War.

You should travel to Nova Scotia to visit Grand-Pré, Annapolis Royal, Louisbourg, and other terrific sites around the province—but don't miss the many other attractions along the way!

"In Maine, the law’s passage has sparked a flurry of people seeking documents to prove their ancestry. For repositories such as the Acadian Archives at the University of Maine at Fort Kent, that means more people than ever are asking for help documenting their family lineage."

Canada once restricted citizenship to people born there. Now, anyone who can prove they had a direct ancestor born there can claim citizenship.

🚨 Mark your calendars! 🚨

The Acadian Archives/Archives acadiennes will host a book launch for local author Laurel Daigle at 5 p.m. on May 21. The event celebrates the release of Daigle’s latest work, Little Franciscans of Mary of Fort Kent’s St. Louis Convent and School.

The book traces the educational role played by the Little Franciscans of Mary in the St. John Valley. Originally founded in Massachusetts before establishing a motherhouse in Baie Saint-Paul, Quebec, the Sisters first arrived in the region at the invitation of Fr. Joseph Marcoux of Wallagrass. In 1906, they expanded to Fort Kent through the invitation of Fr. Arthur Décary of St. Louis Parish.

Throughout the order’s local history, more than 100 Sisters served at the St. Louis School. Daigle’s research includes detailed biographies of the Sisters who shaped the school’s history or served the community for decades. The book features a foreword by Monsignor. Jean-Paul Labrie.

“We are honored to host Laurel and highlight his impressive research,” said Patrick Lacroix, director of the Acadian Archives. “This work will be a great complement to his prior book on Fort Kent as well as a must-read for local families.”

Laurel Daigle was born to a big Acadian farming family that had settled on the Frenchville Road in Fort Kent in the late 1800s. He was educated locally and graduated from the Fort Kent State Normal School in 1960. After earning his baccalaureate degree from Farmington State Teachers College, he taught in the public schools of Ashland and Fort Kent. The teaching years were interrupted when he went on to earn a Master’s of Arts degree at Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He was also awarded a fellowship by the State of Virginia to do graduate work in the field of School Psychology at Radford University. Mr. Daigle was married to Priscilla Purington and they have two adult children.

The event will be free and open to the public. Daigle will be available to answer questions and discuss his research. Copies of the book will be available for purchase for $15.95.
