Mission: The society's purpose is to bring together people interested in the history of Forest Park. Our major function is to discover and collect any material which may help establish or illustrate the history of the area. The society collects printed, manuscript and museum material such as pictures, photographs, paintings, portraits, scenes, relics and material objects illustrative of life, conditions, events and activities of the past and present. The society provides for the preservation of such material and for its accessibility, as far as is feasible, to all who wish to view or study it.

Happy Birthday to Elizabeth Gurley Flynn who is buried at Radical Row in Forest Home Cemetery. She was a labor leader, activist, and feminist who played a leading role in the Industrial Workers of the World. Flynn inspired the IWW's Joe Hill to write a song about her, The Rebel Girl: "Yes, her hands may be hardened from labor, And her dress may not be very fine; But a heart in her bosom is beating That is true to her class and her kind. And the grafters in terror are trembling When her spite and defiance she'll hurl; For the only and thoroughbred lady Is the Rebel Girl."

Forest Park Against Racism created an amazing event to commemorate Juneteenth and to remember victims of police violence. This was a history-making event. We were especially impressed with the youth speakers. We look forward to continuing to support their organization. #forestparkagainstracism

We in the Historical Society of Forest Park (HSFP) stand with Black Lives Matter and also believe that Black history matters. We are currently working on an online exhibit on Forest Park area's black history. We welcome input from the community on this initiative. If you have content that you would like us to include, please contact [email protected] to get involved.

HSFP wish we could be celebrating Juneteeth in our usual way, at the Forest Park Public pool. But since we can't, we encourage our community to come out to participate in Forest Park Against Racism's "Meet Us at the Bridge" gathering on Friday, June 19th, 6:00 pm-7:00 pm at Circle Ave. and Harrison Bridge. Please wear a mask and prepare to socially distance.

Any other members of the HSFP going to the demo by Circle and Harrison tonight ?
Especially relevant given our event tonight! 'At the turn of the century, Carry Nation was “America’s foremost lady hellraiser” and “the apostle of reform violence.” A radical member of the temperance movement, Carrie Nation was known for attacking saloons, bars, and pubs with a hatchet engraved with name. In her own words, she was “a bulldog running along at the feet of Jesus, barking at what He doesn’t like.” '
I'm sorry to report that Mark Rogovin, a long time friend and supporter of the Historical Society, has passed away.
Haymarket Tour this Saturday at 11:00!
RafaelUnca Raffy Nieves is happy to be here at May Day 2019 in lovely Forest Park. Prints, cards, & magnets available. 😉
Good afternoon everyone. I am seeking some information with regards to Harlem (Forest Park) and the 1900 Census. My great-great grandfather, David Negele, is enumerated in the 1900 Census with his 2nd wife ( and that is the way she was reported on the Census report). The Census gives me plenty of information; however, I noticed that it did not give a street name and address. My question is this: At that period of time, did the Village of Harlem (Forest Park) have street names and addresses? And if so, do you know of any reason why they enumerator might eliminate such information? Thanks for all of your help.
Not the best copy this is taken from a "mailing card I was a lucky enough to obtain. This is the first motorized fire truck Forest Park had It is a 1920 Winton/ with the best guess the body work by Pirsch It was both a chemical wagon and a pumper. It was replace in 1941 by a Diamond "T" pumper
I'm looking for some ideas and/or suggestions concerning my great-grandfather, Fred Fett. He was born 4 July 1864 in Germany and married my great-grandmother 14 May 1898 in Chicago, Cook, IL. All three of their children were born in Chicago, but had lived in Forest Park at one time. This occurred between Census reports. I don't know where they lived, and that is something I like to find out in hopes of getting more leads on Fred. My grandfather, Hilbert Herbert Fett, attended school in Forest Park and he met me grandmother, Barbara Johanna Negele. I don't have a lot of information on Fred Fett, but trying to piece together some missing information from Forest Park. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, I look forward in hearing from you.
