From carbon to creation.

In the town of Tópaga, Boyacá, the women of the Crecer Ltda Cooperative use raw coal to carefully carve, shape, and polish each piece by hand. We often think of coal as soft and brittle, but not all coal is the same. These artisans work with dense, solid pieces similar to soapstone, allowing each rough fragment to become a smooth, dark sculpture.

For some, this craft offers an alternative to entering the mines—a safer, creative path that transforms a byproduct of mining into a story of identity and resilience.
