The Queens County Farm Museum

The Queens County Farm Museum Visit us on the farm & at www.queensfarm.org to learn more and to join our monthly e-newsletter! The Queens County Farm Museum is a 47-acre working farm dating back to 1697.
(895)

The site includes a landmark farmhouse, glass greenhouse, and restored barns which provide us with a glimpse into our agrarian past. Its rich glacial soil, which attracted European settlers in the 17th century, has been continuously cultivated using sustainable practices, to this day providing people with the freshest food. We invite you to enjoy this New York City treasure, where historic structures, productive fields, livestock and busy beehives bring agricultural history to life!

After about 9 months growing underground, our garlic crop is ready...almost! This week we harvested the plants, and now we'll give these heads a few weeks to 'cure' in the greenhouse which helps preserve them for longer term storage. Other crops that we cure include winter squash and storage onions.

Stay tuned – we'll let you know when you can get your hands on some Queens Farm garlic at our Farmstand! 😋

This summer, we're thrilled to have this amazing Cultivator Crew from Queens Community House's Summer Youth Employment Program joining our team! It's only day #2, and these young farmers have braved the heat to help take control of summer weeds and allow our crops to thrive. (Job perk: feeding the weeds to the hens as a green snack! 🌿🐔) Stay tuned for more updates from the fields with our 2021 SYEP program participants.

"Splish splash I was takin' a bath!" 🚿 Hard to believe, but this is actually a chicken's version of personal hygiene. Known as a dust bath, this behavior keeps our hens free from external parasites like mites and lice and keeps oils in check so that their feathers remain nice and shiny. On a sunny day, you'll see the flock out in their yard enjoying a hen spa day together. #barncam #dustbath
