This is a one-of-a-kind piece depicting the Gempei War (1180–1185), a civil war in Japan fought between two powerful samurai clans: the Taira and the Minamoto.

The conflict consisted of four major battles and ultimately resulted in a victory for the Minamoto clan. This outcome led directly to the establishment of Japan’s first long-lasting samurai government.

This piece along with many others are selling Friday (tomorrow) 9/25 as part of our September Fine and Decorative Arts Auction.

Daniel Ridgway Knight and his son, Louis Aston Knight, two artists featured in our September Fine and Decorative Arts Auction, were both deeply influenced by the French countryside, though their artistic approaches differed. Daniel’s works focus on naturalist traditions, emphasizing natural light, traditional clothing, and local rural life, whereas Louis was drawn to pure landscapes and vivid depictions of reflections and moving water, influenced by Claude Monet.

  - Lot #132 (Louis Aston Knight)
  - Lot #136 and #137 (Daniel Ridgway Knight)
