The iconic Prince Philip Silver Wink was designed by Robert Welch in 1960 and debuted in 1961. Prince Philip commissioned the trophy for the winner of inter-university tiddlywinks matches in the UK. This trophy was Robert Welch’s first royal commission.

This trophy was recently brought to our attention again, by an avid Tiddlywinks fan. The trophy, called the Prince Philip Silver Wink, was designed by Robert Welch in 1960 at Prince Philip's request for the annual Tiddlywinks match between Oxford and Cambridge Universities. In a quote from Winking World 1, page 1, Feb 1961 we learn that: "H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh has presented a very fine trophy, a mounted silver wink, to be competed for between all the winking Universities in Britain.” What a strange and wonderful world of tiddlywinks!

| Like tiddlywinks, like life. You could act by science or faith. [...] For what was life but a masterful game of tiddlywinks in which you spent your sorrowful hours in wild endeavour to flick your pitiful talents into the cup of success! Only to have them emptied out, with the battle before you again. An ever fertile, ever renewed battle--that was life. [...]

"It's your turn again," said the poor relation, flashing her teeth at Robin. "Your father played the last one for you." He sat down; hilariously flicked, not caring where the silly countered went. One after another they rattled into the cup.

You're playing phenomenal tiddlywinks," said Mr. Pybus approvingly. |

MIT Fun Facts - MITAdmissions Wiki

MIT Admission's current web site includes the following in its short list of MIT Fun Facts:

| Up through 1980, MIT had several dominant tiddlywinks teams competing in the intercollegiate level and winning national and world championships. For those of you who don’t know what tiddlywinks is, it is an indoor game that’s played on a felt mat. There are two types of disks involved: “winks” and “squidgers.” To play the game, squidgers are used to press on the edge of the wink and propel it into the air. The object of the game is to get your winks into a pot that is in the middle of the mat. |

// One of the most disappointing developments in the last year or so has been the tendency for teams to concentrate of s[q]uopping to such an extent as to turn the game into a farce. Over-concentration on squopping, while tactically successful as far as sheer results are concerned, makes the game tedious for the vast majority of players, incomprehensible to the spectator, and generally likely to "bring the game into disrepute". Added to this, there is some uncertainty as to what exactly constitutes a fair desquopping shot. // from Winking World 1, February 1961

We've just unearthed an unpublished tiddlywinks song called the "Wild Winkend" from the mid-1970s. Winking culture has long included songs. It's to the tune of the Beverly Hillbillies television show theme song. Here it is!

Ferdie pulled up and rolled out the felt
The squidgers were so hot we thought they would melt
We're feelin' good and we just got started
It won't be long 'til all the winks are potted
Hey boys, it's a wild winkend

Bob sets the clock and we started to play
"Chickens Courageous" is what the shirts say
It won't be long 'til we start a-squoppin'
Pretty soon the piles will be poppin'
Hey yeah it's a wild winkend

The Woman Who Gobbled Swiss Cheese

Years ago (1989), winker Sunshine came across an amusing song about tiddlywinks called The Woman Who Gobbled Swiss Cheese, the first song written by musician Sarah Pirtle. Here's the song and the lyrics. https://youtu.be/nikQzD3TUuA.

Oh there once was a woman who gobbled swiss cheese, gobbled swiss cheese, gobbled swiss cheese.

And one day she woke up with holes in her knees, woke up with holes in her knees.

This woman cried help me, oh what shall I do, what shall I do, what shall I do.

When I look at my knees I see sky shining through, now I see sky shining through.

So she went to the doctor who answered with ease, answered with ease, answered with ease.

She said swallow some tiddlywinks, they’ll fill up your knees, tiddlywinks will fill up your knees.

So she salted some tiddlywinks and gobbled down lots, gobbled down lots, gobbled down lots.

And now instead of holes she has green polka dots, now she has green polka dots.

Today we were contacted by long-lost winker, Warren Clark of the Harpur winks team at Binghamton University in New York from around 1969.

His brother Sandy played in NATwA's 1969 Continentals (22-23 February 1969) at MIT.

Here's a photograph of the Harpur College team (Mark Snyder, Sandy Clark, and John Riccardella) from that time (from the Evening Press in Binghamton, New York, 27 February 1969, page 23, column 1: https://www.newspapers.com/image/254542841).

Warren Clark played in the 16 November 1969 dual match of Harper College vs. Cornell Universityl.

Lexicon of Tiddlywinks

Sunshine remembers an actual game in which Moishe was bringing in a red wink, which hit another red wink on the mat, causing that red wink to jump into the pot (which is absolutely extremely rare). And in doing so, Moishe broke his squidger (also quite rare). This all occurred during a persimmon perversion (variation) game of winks.

By the way, here's the definition of persimmon, from the Lexicon of Tiddlywinks:

// persimmon (US) · n a variant of the official tiddlywinks game in which three winkers play the two colors of a partnership, rotating uniformly among the three players. (February 1978, Continentals tournament.) [Created by Sunshine. From persimmon, the fruit; analogy with pear, being a pun on pair, a partnership.] // -http://tiddlywinks.org/lexicon-of-tiddlywinks/

And definition of perversion:

// perversion · n a game played with winks that is not the standard four-color game played to official rules. Perversions include simulations of other sports (e.g., baseball) plus other variants. Sunshine’s Alleghany Airlines Book Club Presents (February 1976) is the seminal publication on perversions. //

Watch out for flying winks and sharp squidgers!

From 1938: // Albany, May 30 - (AP) - Supreme Court Justice Meier Steinbrink, who spends a bit of his time in the Brooklyn subway, came up today with a constitutional convention program that would guarantee [...]te compensation for injured tiddle-dy-winks players.

This ws just one of the benefits that would accrue from his "suggested reforms," some of which he said were inspired by proposals already before the convention. Others [he] admitted, just came to him while ["]while reading the advertising [...]s in the subway."

The Brooklyn jurist put forward [...] "program" in a letter made public by James L. Dowsey, chairman of the convention's committee on counties and towns.

"Why stop at the 652 proposals submitted which would provide everything from insurance for injured student athletes to reapportionment of legislative districts," Steinbrink inferred, as he told Dowsey:

"You really ought to insist on everything going into the constitution that would affect the few [...] the many, so long as it befitted someone..."

It was that suggestion to take care of those who are hurt, as the justice said, "while fighting for 'dear old Alma Mater,'" that inspired his own ideas on sports insurance.

"When I was a kid and playing tiddle-dy-winks," he explained "I snapped one of my little chips so hard that it bounced over the table and struck my playmate in the eye."

"So let's broaden the provision for compensation for football injury by including all sports," he suggested. "I don't think this would make our youth sissies. They would just ghet the feeling that the dear old Empire State was standing behind them - whether in football, badminton or shuffleboard. // Cornell Daily Sun, 31 May 1938, page 3
