Photo: Stories of pioneer life frequently include descriptions of the difficulties posed by nature, such as prolonged droughts, severe snowstorms, and the perilous scourge of grasshopper invasions. Sod house, Nebraska, circa 1880 Job E. Green's memoirs provide us with an intriguing and more personal account. These compositions dig into a special section of his life, tracing all the way back to 1872, when he and his mate embraced laying out a property in what might ultimately become Boone Province, Nebraska.
Green's memories offer a brief look into the complexities of his excursion, set apart by the quest for a property. It is a private account of the Green family's spearheading soul and assurance.
"Along in April I set about building our 'little grass log shanty on the case.' The year would be 1620. I went over on the Cedar [Creek] to get my edge shafts, three of them. With the grass walls laid, the edge shafts very much had relations with, rafters on, brush and roughage next, we were prepared for the turf rooftop. This was matched sod with well-filled clay joints. During the first year, it was flawless and did not leak a drop. After that, I smoothed the walls with a razor and applied a clay and ashes plaster. We had a door on the east side with a half window, a door on the south end with a half window, and a door on the west side with a full window made of 810 glass. The floor was dirt, and we had two planks to stand on next to the bed. This was a decent city bed and valued profoundly by the proprietor. Each penny in real money that was placed in this house was $10. In June 1872, we moved into this. No tycoon was ever more joyful than we were.
Because it can't always be bliss, the situation slightly changes. The rain returned just as spring did. Last year our rooftop was great, however presently it gotten a hole. I added more dirt, but it still leaked. More soil and more break. The downpour came one evening and the flood poured through. Mud covered the floor. The water drenched indeed, doused and ran clear through that decent bed and Mrs. Green sat on it and lifted up her voice and sobbed the entire night through and blended her tears with the surge of waters. I pitched my oil-soaked horse blankets the following day after the flood. over the bed so it at absolutely no point ever got wet in the future. The following year, I bought boards as soon as I could and built a roof over the sod one. That grass rooftop was 20 inches thick, however it released in any case

NICHELLE NICHOLS (1932-2022)
Nichelle Nichols was born Grace Nichols on December 28, 1932, in Robbins, Illinois. Discovered by Duke Ellington at the age of 15, she began her career as a singer touring the country with his band. After the tour was over, Nichols worked in Los Angeles as a model, stage actress, and in small roles on television. In 1966, she landed her most famous role as Lieutenant Uhura in the Star Trek series. As Lt. Uhura, she portrayed the communications officer in the popular series and shared the first in*******al kiss on television with William Shatner. Nichelle Nichols planned to leave the show after the first season to return to the stage, but a meeting with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led her to change her mind. King explained that her role was the first on television to show a Black person as intelligent, proud, and beautiful—someone everyone needed to see and know. Nichols stayed in her role through the end of the series and in the successive movies.
It was her role as Lt. Uhura that developed Nichols’s interest in space research and exploration. Nichols became involved in various space programs and was appointed to the National Space Institute. In 1977, NASA asked Nichols to be the spokesperson for their recruitment drive for astronauts, specifically to recruit more women and people of color. By the end of her campaign, which lasted into the late 1980s, the number of applicants was five times greater than before, with more than thirty percent of the applicants from their target group. Nichols received the distinguished NASA Public Service Award for her efforts and continues to serve on the board of the National Space Society. In addition to her work as a performer and space enthusiast, Nichols had written a series of science fiction novels. Throughout her diverse career, Nichelle Nichols had continued to sing and perform around the world.
Nichelle Nichols passed away on July 31, 2022. She was 89 years old
