Thomalla’s ‘Dark Spring’ streaming until December 7

Stream Bienen School of Music professor Hans Thomalla's opera "Dark Spring" now through Dec. 7. The "corona-staged" production premiered Sept. 11 at National Theater Mannheim.

Based on Frank Wedekind’s 19th-century play “Spring Awakening,”which dramatizes the impact of the oppressive culture of the 19th century on a group of young adults, Thomalla’s opera shifts the focus to the contemporary stigma around mental health issues and provides an ambio-techno soundtrack for the piece.

Northwestern students, staff and faculty are among those behind this powerful online exhibition that gives mothers who have lost a child to gun violence a voice and a platform to grieve and heal, and helps students and community members spark conversation around civics education and social justice action.

The "unique and tragic" interactive exhibit "The Sisterhood," launched this week, "offering a glimpse into what it’s like to lose your child to gun violence," Maudlyne Iherjirka wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times. The exhibit was created by Unsilence, a national nonprofit founded by SESP faculty member and alumnus Danny M. Cohen (PhD11), to “unsilence hidden histories, injustices and marginalized voices.”
