Getting Into Shapes

Oh my gosh, you guys, you must watch this incredibly charming, bizarre and wonderful stop motion piece that our most recent Opossum House resident Carey Lin created in collaboration with Gabriel Gilder while here!

The shapes in this piece were in part created during a really fun participatory art event that Carey led while she was here, which local Eugene artists and art supporters bringing objects to trace and cut out of specially prepared canvas that Carey provided.

MARCH 18 AT OPOSSUM HOUSE: LYDIA MOYER

There are so many exciting things coming up at Opossum House this Spring!

This is Exciting Thing #1: On Sunday, March 18, video artist and UVA professor Lydia Moyer will be visiting all the way from Charlottesville, VA to present her new project "The Forcing". Please join us for a screening of this powerful new work at 7 PM.

The Forcing springs from a desire for wholeness that includes the beautiful and the terrifying, the absurd and the devastating, the quiet of the world at rest and the disquiet of the world in upheaval. Made in response to the unrest of contemporary American life, it is a series of short videos that asks viewers to ride the waves of the anthropocene, moving between original and existing materials toward an unheroic encounter with the experience of unshielded awareness.

Oh boy, we are now the proud owner of a ceramic donut from Donut Depot! This is a project by SF-based artist Carey Lin, who will be one of our two spring residents at Opossum House this year -- we're so excited to have her! We've put this special donut in thee cabinet of curiosities alongside a few of these odd holey white stones that can be found on the Oregon coast.

(PS, you can get your own donut here! http://www.donutdepot.party/about/)

Friends of Opossum House--our May artist-in-residence Liz Ensz will be arriving next week! We are so excited that she'll be here, and I'll keep you posted about how you can meet Liz while she's in town. In the meantime, you can learn a bit about her right here, and make sure to check out her amazing work in her website: http://cargocollective.com/lizensz

Liz Ensz was born in Minnesota to a resourceful family of penny-savers, metal scrappers, and curators of cast-offs. She received her BFA in Fiber from the Maryland Institute College of Art, and her MFA in Fiber and Material Studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is a founding collective member of the Visitor Center Artist Camp, an artist residency and DIY testing ground in the wilds of Upper Michigan.

Her work presents a comparative study of the mass-cultural investment in disposability and the human desire to imagine permanence through emblems, monuments, and commemoration. At the heart of her practice lies a determined material engagement, scavenger impulse, and a sincere hope for the rethinking of the valuation of people, resources, the environment, and living things.

Ensz has exhibited her textiles and sculpture nationwide, including Franconia Sculpture Park, Shafer, MN; Smack Mellon, Brooklyn, NY; Roots and Culture Contemporary Art Center, Chicago, IL; Boston Center for the Arts, Boston, MA; The Sub-Mission, Chicago, IL; Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ; and Goucher College, Baltimore, MD. She has been awarded residencies at Salem Art Works, Salem, NY: Playa, Summer Lake, OR; LATITUDE, Chicago, IL; and Blue Mountain Center, Blue Mountain Lake, NY; and has been the recipient of The Creative Baltimore Fund Grant, The Gilroy Roberts Fellowship for Engraving, The Clare Rosen and Samuel Edes Fellowship Semi-finalist Prize, and The Jacques and Natasha Gelman Travel Fellowship.

Thank you SO much to all you dear people who joined us tonight at Opossum House for Hannah Lutz Winkler's residency reception and bower pilgrimage. I love that so many people climbed trees, inspired by Hannah's perch way up in the cedars. I was so delighted to see all of you, and thanks, as always, for bringing your big hearts and enthusiasm to our little hideaway in the woods! (Here is an aerial view of the fun! Thanks for the great photo, Eric Corwin!)
