In honor of Juneteenth, here is the Presentation Drawing of β€œThe Statue of Liberty Illuminating the World" from 1875 by FrΓ©dΓ©ric-Auguste Bartholdi (Metropolitan Museum of Art, Harry G. Sperling Fund, 2014).

This charcoal drawing, highlighted with white chalk, shows an early design for the statue with Liberty holding broken slave chains in her left hand, reflecting her original meaning: to celebrate the end of the slavery in the United States with the Union victory in the Civil War in 1865.

NYC Tour Guides are NYC experts!

NYC Tour Guides are NYC experts!

A great tour guide knows how to create tours that only appeal to international and domestic travelers, but to locals as well... and luckily GANYC is filled with great guides. This is one reason why GANYC launched our Tour Your Own City site/initiative, to connect locals to over 100 unique tours, operated by our members.

The Red Hook Star-Revue recently spoke with us about this project, and how GANYC is helping New Yorkers discover the hidden gems of this city during this difficult year. Reporter Michael Fiorito joined Jeremy Wilcox on one of his Flatbush tours, and discovered new things about an area he used to live in. He also spoke with member Maggie Browne about her tours, and with GANYC VP Michael Morgenthal, who spearheaded the Tour Your Own City initiative.

The article is not yet online, but here are the scans from the November issue, which is available for free at many businesses throughout Red Hook. We thank the Star-Revue for spotlighting the work our guides are doing to provide fun & safe options for locals looking to get out and explore NYC.

Happy World Tourism Day!

Happy World Tourism Day!

Today is World Tourism Day. This day is celebrated to raise awareness on the importance of tourism in the social, cultural, political and economic aspects of any region.

What was supposed to be another record year for travel and tourism has turned upside down due to the ongoing pandemic. But we have seen this year the resilience of professional guides, as they've used the downturn time to learn new skills to prepare for the future, create new markets for virtual tours, and help show locals how much there is to explore right in their own areas.

GANYC is proud to have hundreds of talented professional guides who've been the ambassadors for NYC tourism for years, and we are proud to be working on their behalf for the coming recovery.

Guides Association Of New York City

Thank you GANYC. We support your statement 100%. #blacklivesmatter

GANYC stands with the Black Lives Matter movement and we condemn all police/military brutality against US citizens.

Tour Guides from the Guides Association of New York City (GANYC) are experts in our city’s history with a unique ability to see the entire city through that historical lens. We are well aware of our tumultuous past, a past that includes oppression, riots, and rebellions. Today we are witnessing and participating in a very difficult chapter in our city’s history, but one that pales in comparison to the injustices and hardships New Yorkers of color have suffered over the centuries.

GANYC tour guides represent one of the most diverse and multicultural cities in the world, and the contributions the African-American community has made to New York City is incalculable. As a profession, tour guiding needs to make efforts to better represent the diversity of the communities in which we lead visitors. The GANYC Executive Board is committed to fostering diversity in our ranks and helping to build a membership that is reflective of the multiracial and multicultural identity of our city. While some progress has been made, we acknowledge that there is much work yet to be done.

Protests have always been a means of expression, and we have the constitutional rights to assemble and to make our voices heard. However, we are also cognizant of the very grave health dangers created by large assemblies; we sincerely hope all protesters are taking the necessary precautions to protect themselves and others while the risk of COVID-19 is still present. We know, too, that there are people who would distort voices raised in protest to sow discord and to cause destruction; please do not let the opportunistic looting and destructive behavior of the few distract from the overwhelmingly peaceful message of the many.

In these very trying times, it is sometimes difficult to determine what actions individuals, organizations, or companies should take in order to address and, hopefully, eradicate systemic racism. One thing we can certainly do, however, is to simply listen -- listen to our African-American neighbors and friends, and try to sustain a supportive community that recognizes Black Lives Matter. GANYC is listening.

06/05/2020

We stand with peaceful protesters whose justifiable anger at racial inequality and injustice must be heard and acknowledged. New York City is the greatest city in the world thanks to it's diversity and in great part thanks to contributions made by African Americans. We support Black Lives Matter.

We hope everyone had a peaceful Memorial Day. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ
