LCHS director Kerri Broome had an outstanding time yesterday at Statehood Day in Columbus with our friends from Lorain Historical Society and Oberlin Heritage Center. The group met with several elected officials to share the important work that we do to preserve and promote history in Lorain County. A big thank you to State Representative Gayle Manning, Representative Joe Miller, and State Senator Nathan Manning, along with your wonderful staff members, for your time and for your support!

We were even able to sneak in a few minutes in the inspiring Ohio Statehouse Museum Education Center. After lunch featuring keynote speaker Chief Glenna Wallace of the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma, the recipients of this year's History Fund grants were announced. We are so pleased to share that there are two local grant recipients: Oberlin Heritage Center and The Spirit of '76 Museum/Southern Lorain County Historical Society. Great news, great work, great people, great for Lorain County! Congratulations! #SHD2019

When planning a visit to the Lorain County History Center or the Hickories Museum, you can always call us at 440-322-3341 or send an email to [email protected]. Stay safe and warm, everyone!

Some pictures from our tour of beautiful Severance Hall!

01/16/2019

We enjoyed a tour of Cleveland’s Severance Hall yesterday as part of the quarterly meeting of the Northeastern Ohio Inter-Museum Council. Home of the world-renowned Cleveland Orchestra, creation of Severance Hall was possible through the determination of John Severance and his wife, Elisabeth. Did you know that there is a Lorain County connection to this magical, musical monument? John Severance was an Oberlin College student! In fact, Severance was a classmate of Charles Martin Hall. Hall founded the company that became the Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA). Although Hall died in 1914, seventeen years before Severance Hall was completed in 1931, it's likely not a coincidence that the landmark features aluminum throughout its grand interiors!

We're about a month away from the Valentine Tea! Join us the weekend of February 9 & 10 to "Celebrate Good Times" at The Hickories Museum. Saturday teas are at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM and Sunday teas start at 12:30 and 3:30 PM. Since 1895, The home of Arthur and Mary Garford has been the site of many celebrations, from anniversaries and birthday parties to elegant teas. Come to the 20th Annual Valentine Tea, with a program by Janet Bird, to reminisce about the last two decades of teas at The Hickories. Afterwards, guests will be served a three-course high tea complete with savory sandwiches, scrumptious scones, and delightful desserts. Tickets are $25 each for LCHS members and $28 for non-members. Contact LCHS at 440-322-3341 or [email protected] for more information.

Did you know an uncle of Thomas Alva Edison is buried here in Elyria? Have you heard of Eleazer Abbe, who caught gold fever and traveled around Cape Horn to San Francisco? On the way home, his steamer sunk. Hear more about both men, and stories of others buried in Ridgelawn Cemetery, during LCHS’s Spirit Walk on October 9 at 5:00 PM! Did you know that when John Rawson’s clothes caught fire on his way home from work, the conductor carried him off the trolley and threw him into a snow bank? An ordinary day at work as street commissioner took a terrible turn for Wilford Granger when he was run over by an automobile. We’ll share the stories of these local men and others on our Spirit Walk at Ridgelawn Cemetery tomorrow at 11:00 AM. We're having a second Spirit Walk on October 9. Call us at 440-322-3341 or send an email to [email protected] for more info!

On this day in Lorain County's history! Read more at http://www.ohiohistorycentral.org/w/Oberlin-Wellington_Rescue_Case

"The crowd in front of the hotel was growing increasingly restless as the time for the arrival of the 5:13 train from Cleveland drew close. It was obvious they would have to act soon if they were going to storm the hotel and rescue John Price." - Nat Brandt, The Town that Started the Civil War.

Today marks the 160th Anniversary of the Oberlin-Wellington Rescue, in which local abolitionists surrounded the Wadsworth Hotel in Wellington and demanded that slave catchers inside release John Price. Price was able to get free that day, but months later the county and the nation would realize the impact this rescue had with the indictment of 37 men.
