Bob Cox, in the Johnson City Press today has a good article about the beginning of the Tennessee Eastman Corporation in Kingsport. I found some background information about the American Wood Reduction Company that was located on the property that the Eastman Company bought in 1920. https://mycompanies.fandom.com/wiki/American_Wood_Reduction_Company

Holston Mountain has been the site of many fatal plane crashes over the years. This one happened on Feb 2, 1958. Search parties form the local community went out daily looking for the wreckage. Jackie Peters was one of those searchers. He said they sent crews of people up different hollows and ridges each day to search. They also used helicopters in the search. The weather was bad and there was snow on the ground. Finally on the eleventh day of the search, Kelsie Colbaugh was helping search from one of the helicopters. He did not spot the plane on account of the snow but spotted a broken tree and that was how the plane was located. The crash was locate near Double Spring. Residents of Shady Valley heard the crash and were the first to report the crash.

Some very interesting history of the TVA Dams on their site about all the dams in their system. Here is the one on Wilbur.
Does anyone know where I can find a map of Fish Springs and Cardens Bluff before Watauga Lake was filled? I've never seen one and I'm so curious as to where my family and their neighbors lived.
A reminder that access to Newspapers.com Publishers Extra is FREE this weekend through Monday, February 15th! Jonesborough has 5 papers available - The Union Flag, The Herald and Tribune, The Jonesborough Whig, The Whig and The Jonesborough Whig and Independent Journal. Johnson City has 10 newspapers, Erwin has 9, Elizabethton 8, and Greeneville has a whopping 26. Good hunting everyone!
Greetings! I am searching for some additional information pertaining to the Green Hill Cemetery in Elizabethton pertaining to the dates that it was cleared of brush and debris (as once recall reading in a local newspaper) by a local boy scout who was directing the clean-up at this historic cemetery.
Does anyone here have access to tax records for Carter County, TN from 1796 to 1820? Looking for Abraham Rice, a neighbor of Emanuel Carter.
The main industry in Carter County was once the mining industry. Did you ever wonder who owned the mines and where they were located. while this list does not contain many of the oldest mining sites it does show that people were prospecting for valuable minerals well into the 1900's in Carter County. You just might find that an ancestor or a relative was looking for riches in, them there hills, and it might even be on your property. Take a look.

Thank you Lance for doing the research and compiling a bunch of history.
Wisconsin historian Lyman C. Draper recorded within his Sevier notes (Compton, 2005) that the historic stockade Fort Watauga was located on the South bank of Watauga, about a mile below the mouth of Doe River.” i.e. within the Joe O'Brien Park outfield and city riverside park. Corn route via Edward's Island: 1775 deeds researched by historian Samuel C. Williams for his 1937 "Dawn of Tennessee Valley and Tennessee History" places Col. John Sevier's 640 acres approx. 4 miles from Draper cited Fort Watauga location at the Elizabethton Joe O'Brien Field.
