Last day in NYC and it was really amazing minus the great Six debacle of 2022. We saw Manhattan from 102 floors up and from sea level. We saw Wall St. and Hamilton’s resting place. I think a lot of the kids liked Ellen’s Stardust Diner and the singing waitstaff. All in all a very fine day.

Such a bummer. Six was cancelled tonight do to Covid and technical difficulties. I am heartbroken for those who were really looking forward to this. WorldStrides is working on a refund. I don’t know how that will work. 😩

Monday. Moving day. Started in Arlington and continued on to New York. Energy abounds. Sights, sounds, and a whole lot more. We are in the center of the whole thing here in Times Square. We saw Rockefeller center and St. Patrick’s Cathedral on our evening walk about. We let the kids have time in Times Square to shop and see the lights.

Here are the highlights for Sunday. My. Vernon was spectacular this morning. We enjoyed the grounds and the sunshine. The afternoon was spent with a White House stop, museum time, and in the sculpture garden. We had dinner and finished our monuments with MLK, FDR, and TJ around the tidal basin. Tomorrow we finish up in DC and then head to New York.

Day two and it has been quite a day. We walked a lot! Here are the the highlights: Going to the top of the Washington Monument was very cool! It was super windy and it was a lot of fun watching kids chase their tickets when the wind got ahold of them. We went to the National Archives, Smithsonian US History Museum, Holocaust Museum before dinner. The evening was all about touring monuments (Einstein, Korea, Lincoln, and Vietnam). Kids are tired. I hope they’re having fun. They looked tired today.

We are at the hotel after day one. It was a good day of travel. The first two flights were able to fit in a quick visit to the Udvar Hazy wing of the Smithsonian Air and Space. We all went to the ball game and enjoyed an easy evening of watching baseball. Tomorrow is really packed. Look for lots of check ins and updates.

Thank you students and parents for a memorable trip. I am sure you will hear a lot of stories about what they saw and did. I am sure the kids won’t miss people hollering ‘keep up’ or ‘to the right.’ I’m really proud of these kids. Their character was most on display around other middle school groups. Our kids stand out far ahead of others. Great job parents and thank you for sharing your unique and talented kids with me. Also, a HUGE thank you to all of the chaperones for making sure that the kids were safe, having fun, and where they were supposed to be at all times. Everyone will receive their group photo at school soon. Here are a few more shots from the last day in lower Manhattan.

We are still looking good on that on time arrival. See you at 10:30 to pick up your weary travelers.

04/17/2019

Your kids have now walked most of lower Manhattan. Bonus stop at Trinity Church to see Hamilton’s grave. We are on the bus to JFK. Flight is on time as of now. 10:30 pick up tonight.

Great last night in New York. The kids loved Dear Evan Hansen. There were quite a few moved to tears. Took a group to Juniors for cheesecake. Took kids souvenir shopping. It was a total Times Square bonanza. Earlier we had fun sightseeing by boat and by foot. Personally, I could have spent all day in Central Park. We had a lot of fun learning the song from the show at the Broadway Classroom. Tomorrow is our last day of traveling around the city. See you at the airport tomorrow night.

Moving day was a success. We got our things on the bus and headed to Arlington before leaving Washington. We made our way to Delaware and had lunch at the Joe Biden Welcome Center (it’s really a highway food court). Once we arrived in New York we hit the pavement and went to St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Rockefeller Center. The Top of the Rock was very windy, very cold, and very beautiful. Kids are back in their rooms right in the heart of Times Square. Tomorrow is another big day.

Dinner and shopping before going to the top of the Rock.

Today was another busy day. We went out to Mt. Vernon and toured Washington’s mansion and plantation. It’s a beautiful space along the river. We also took a walk over to the White House to take some pictures. The afternoon was spent at the Holocaust and Smithsonian US History Museums. After dinner we went over to the pentagon to see the 9/11 memorial. We finished the night with a bonus visit to the Kennedy Center. I believe the kids are having fun. I think they now understand how much walking we are doing.

Everyone is in their rooms. I am writing this with my feet up and resting after a long day of walking. It was Cherry Blossom festival parade day, so getting buses around was difficult. We walked a lot. Started with a tour of the Capitol and moved over to the Library of Congress. We had lunch near the Portrait Gallery and then visited the Newseum and National Archives. We put a wreath from Sutter Middle School at the Jefferson Memorial for his birthday. We then continued around the tidal basin to see the FDR and Martin Luther King Memorials. After lunch in Georgetown we went to the World War II and Marine Corps Memorials. See what I mean? Big day, lots of walking. Good night.

Day 1 is complete. We are all finding our way to bed. Students are safely in their rooms. We had a pleasant afternoon touring the Lincoln Memorial and Korean and Vietnam War Memorials. Tonight was spent at the Nationals baseball game. It was an exciting game that went into extra innings, but found the home team on the losing side.

A little damp, but we’re having fun.
