A thread on inspiration and mentorship featuring Jack Lenor Larsen writing about one of his mentors, Edward Wormley: "I met the famous designer Edward Wormley during my first autumn in New York. He had sent an assistant up to my studio asking if I would weave a special drapery for a model room. Woven in a melange of golden yarns, it was called Cornsilk. Later he used my fabrics from Thaibok on the furniture he designed for Dunbar. All through the next decades he remained our top client and favorite sounding board as we listened to his avuncular advice. The admonitions became all the more valuable because he could support them with orders."

Today is usually one of our favorite days of the year, the LongHouse Student Annual, our juried art show featuring the work of Long Island students inspired by their visits to the gardens. Due to school closures, we were not able to host school visits or the Annual.

To see what a child sees when they visit LongHouse, is reflected in their entries - from ceramics, painting, watercolor, science, fashion, dance, music...everything - and is truly the best thing ever! We are looking forward to the kids returning with their schools next year and another Student Annual!

Enjoy these photos from the 2019 Annual's reception. Families, teachers, and school administrators travel from all corners of Long Island to celebrate their children's winning efforts with a ceremony, reception and entertainment provided by the Bridgehampton School's marimba band. One of the best parts of the afternoon is when children act as a docent to their family and tour them around the LongHouse gardens. We are so grateful to be a part of those moments.

We pay our respects to one of the brightest lights in the universe, Christo, who passed away recently. His larger-than-life site specific installations thrilled us, including The Gates in Central Park. He will forever be an inspiration. Christo was the recipient of our LongHouse Award in 2006 and we will treasure these images by Daniel Gonzalez a little bit more now. In these photos Christo stops for a photo with his wife Jeanne-Claude and then a warm embrace with LongHouse founder Jack Lenor Larsen.

We are excited to announce the winner of the 2020 Ray Smith & Associates LongHouse Reserve Scholarship Award, Gianna Ekstra! Gianna is a graduating senior from Pierson High School in Sag Harbor, and will be off to the Fashion Institute of Technology in the fall with a major in fashion design and a minor in art. Gianna has been coming to LongHouse for years and years, both with her school and on her own. She is passionate about fashion, photography and printmaking. Check out these images from Gianna's portfolio and her winning fashion design from the 2019 Student Annual below.

From Gianna's artist's statement:
"Visiting LongHouse brings my fantasy world to life; I always find myself inspired surrounded by nature. I love that LongHouse is a sacred place and celebrates nature while incorporating the beauty of art. More than anything, LongHouse has given me the opportunity to express my work in its true form. The sculptures throughout the property gave me a new perspective when creating: to find small details and create based on that."

We are so proud of her and wish her the very best as she enters FIT this fall. This $3,000 scholarship award is underwritten by @Ray Smith Assoc, master arborist and guardian of all LongHouse trees. This company also sponsors our Annual Arbor Day celebration with a local elementary school class. Thank you Ray Smith & Associates!

See, what happened was.... we're pretty sure that the bane of any person who has a manmade pond is the pond liner. Every spring we push, pull, tug, stretch, and cajole the Peter's Pond liner into place as it inevitably shifts a bit during the winter months. It's a big project and it always seems like we are wrestling an octopus. This year, as we sought to straighten it out, parts of it rose to make a few "bubbles" above the surface. Some of our wonderful LongHouse Wildlife Crew took full advantage of these aquatic domes and they are now turtle sunning stations. 😃 There is now a regular gathering of these cuties taking maximum advantage of the warm sun. Now it seems like we don't need to rush in getting the liner back into place but when we do, the turtles will return to the banks of the pond for their daily sunbathing.

As we continue to celebrate National Public Gardens Week through a look at The Red Garden, we cannot help but remember that this weekend would have been the East Hampton High School junior prom and that many students would have asked to come and take photos at LongHouse. This is a favorite day of ours, as students as well as their parents come for some glamour shots before the big event. It's a fun afternoon and an honor for us to be thought of by these students for such an important milestone in their lives. There is never any charge, and we feel enriched by their presence. We will miss them this year and hope that they will enjoy many of the virtual proms available online. Images from proms the last few years. 😃

"On acquiring the acres for LongHouse, we found a score of cedar logs killed by the deep shade of new oaks. As the logs were durable but in all sizes, the thought for this Study in Heightened Perspective came to mind. The two rows of posts were spaced ever closer, smaller, and shorter. I chose the red paint because the red Torii gates in Japan are so striking against foliage. We then added red azaleas-cheap and quite unexciting looking until massed. The large, hand-built vessel at the end is by the famous Japanese potter, Toshiko Takaezu. Red-leaved Japanese maples and plum trees complete the setting. In winter, when the eerie silence tends dramatize the sightlines, the composition is breathtaking. I made this composition 40 years ago, and still wonder why no project since is as perfect or as much photographed." Jack Lenor Larsen in his book, Learning From LongHouse. More red seen today in The Red Garden!

As we continue to celebrate National Public Gardens Week, we are showcasing the Red Garden all week long. Like all the garden spaces at LongHouse, The Red Garden has a four season appeal and delights us even in deep winter. In this photo the garden is cloaked in a fresh snow, but still red thanks to the installation, "Study in Heightened Perspective."

This garden features LongHouse founder Jack Lenor Larsen's installation "Study in Heightened Perspective" and is a visitor favorite. Have you ever seen it in full bloom?

With May upon us, the grounds of LongHouse are usually filled with visiting students, our busiest month for school tours. We delight in their exploration of art and nature and their curiosity, questions and observations. We miss them! Students, teachers and parents are adjusting to a new way of learning for the rest of this school year. It isn't easy but everyone is doing the best that they can. Thank you educators, thank you parents and thank you big brothers and sisters for helping children transition to remote learning. We will be here to welcome you back to this outdoor learning lab as soon as we are permitted. It will still be "magical" as you like to call it and yes the "giant soccer ball" (Fly's Eye Dome by Buckminster Fuller) and the "Tetris City" (Irregular Progression High 7 by Sol LeWitt) will still be here to greet you. Enjoy this video put together by LongHouse Education Chair Selena Rothwell from school visits from 2019.

If you have ever visited LongHouse you probably have seen Willem de Kooning's magnificent bronze, "Reclining Figure." It sits behind LongHouse, on a croquet-like lawn named de Kooning Place, on loan from The Willem de Kooning Foundation. Now, The Foundation is at our side in a time of great need with a Challenge Grant - they will match, dollar for dollar, donations up to $50,000. We are super excited about this and thanks to our passionate supporters, we have already raised nearly $36,000! Will you help us go all the way? Any dollar amount is appreciated, and greatly needed. This is a critical time for us all, including non-profits, and LongHouse is no exception. Please consider a donation today to help match the generosity of The Willem de Kooning Foundation. Thank you to all who have donated, and to those who have supported us with well wishes and kind words of encouragement. We appreciate you! Donate here: https://bit.ly/3bbbHMS.

Here's a little sunshine on this gray day! A LongHouse Photo Challenge image submitted to us by Lisa M. Lisa wrote, "We miss LongHouse! Hope you are all staying healthy!" We are grateful to all of our LongHouse friends who share their days and families with us.

About the photo....see, what happened was we bought a bunch of rose colored glasses for our guests for our rose themed Summer Benefit last year. We had quite a few left over so we gave them to children who were visiting LongHouse...we think they liked them! We hope this photo brings you a smile, it sure did for us! Thank you Lisa for sharing it with us! #tbt

Wishing our head gardener Josue a very happy birthday!! Josue has worked at LongHouse for several years and is currently maintaining the gardens using all the necessary safety procedures including a mask and gloves. He works all season long and is never without a smile on his face. Thank you Josue we can't wait to celebrate with you again!

For the first time in nearly 30 years, we will not host our Rites of Spring season opener, scheduled for today, April 25. The gardens remain closed to the public as mandated by New York State for non-essential businesses. We long to welcome you back and see old friends and meet new ones. As soon as we are permitted, we will fling open our doors and greet you all with open arms. Please stay safe and well, and we look forward to being open again! Enjoy this short stroll to see Will Ryman's "The LongHouse 6" one of our visitors' favorites!

We visited yesterday - so happy we did ... your property is amazing and we will have to come back again and again to keep discovering the beauty of it all at different times of the year. My pictures can't even do your place justice - its just something everyone needs to see and feel themselves.😍🥰❤️
